INTRODUCTION

On this lesson you will know the concept of voice of verbs and define the term. To further
understand the concept of analogy, let us try first the activities below. To find the answer, perform each
activity. If you find any difficulty in answering the exercises, seek the assistance of your parents or refer
to other refences you have.

Motivation:
Observe the scenario:
“John saw a pretty girl. He went to talk to her. Her husband arrived. The husband hit John
on the nose.”
Questions:
1. What did the husband do?

Discussion/Concepts:

Voice of Verbs
Voice is feature of verb that indicates whether the subject of a sentence is the doer or the receiver of the
action. If a person or thing denoted by the subject is the doer of the action, the verb is said to be in the active
voice. If the person of thing denoted by the subject is the receiver of the action, the verb is in the passive voice.

Compare the following sentence. Note the changes made in the italicized parts of the sentences as the
verbs are changed from the active to passive voice.

Active Voice

1. Miss Santos begins a campaign for cleanliness.

2. A group of children cleans the community.
3. The superintendent supports the project.

Passive Voice

4. A campaign (subject, or formerly the object) for cleanliness was begun by Miss Santos.
5. The community is cleaned by a group (object of the preposition by) of children.
6. The project is supported by the superintend.

When a verb is changed from the active voice to the passive voice in a sentence, three changes take place.

1. The object of the active becomes the subject of the passive voice.
2. The verb in the active voice becomes a verb phrase that follows formula this formula:
Appropriate tense of “to be” + past particle of the main verb.
