Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics

By: Beverly Joy Alonzo

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:

 Identify mean, median and mode

 Apply the concepts of mean, median and mode in real life
situation
 Solve for the mean, median and mode
II. Subject Matter

Topic: Measures of Central Tendency

Concepts:
 Mean- is the average value of all the data in the set.

 Median- the value that has exactly half the data above it and half below it.

 Mode- is the value that occurs most frequently in the set.

Materials: Laptop, TV , and Powerpoint Presentation

Teacher’s Activities Pupil’s

Activities
A. Routinary Activities
 Prayer: (Bea will lead the prayer.)
Class let us all stand. Before we start, Bea please lead
the prayer. Saint Anthony of Padua our patron
saint…
 Greeting the class:
Good morning Ms. Alonzo.
Good morning class.
 Checking of the attendance (The class monitor will check the
attendance)
 Passing of the
assignments: Everyone is present today ma’am.

B. Priming
 Review
Before we start to our new lesson let us have
first a review regarding our previous lesson about
Graphical Representations of Frequency Distributions

What is graph? Graphs are useful for conveying

information very quickly

Thank you! The Summaries of data may be in the Tabular, graphical or numerical form
form of what?

Very Good! Will you enumerate the most common Line graphs, time series, line charts, bar
graphical methods? charts, histograms, frequency polygons,
ogives, pie charts, pictograms, and
Very good! It seems that you do understand our logarithmic graphs
previous lesson about Graphical Representations of
Frequency Distributions

 Motivational Activity
Now class, I have here a set of different
popsicle sticks with different colors I will divide the
class into 3 groups each group will going to separate
the popsicle sticks according to their color, and count
the number of popsicle stick with the same color you
will write your answer on the clean blank paper.
Understand class?
Yes ma’am

Okay. Let’s start now I will give you only three

minutes.

C. Analysis We separate same kinds of popsicle

In our activity a while ago. What have you done? sticks and we count them.

Thank you! And that activity a while ago has a

connection in our topic for today which is Measures of
Central Tendency
(The students will give a number that
D. Abstraction ranges from 1-30)
Now, class there are three most important measures in
Central Tendency so, before we continue I want you to
give me a number that ranges from 1-30 okay so, let’s
start
Yes Ma’am
From this number that you gave to me class, I want
you to add those number and divide your answer by 30
since the total number that I want you to give to me is 15.5
30, understand class?

What answer did you get class?

Very good! And the answer that you get class is called Mean is the sum of all the scores divided
the mean of ungrouped data. So, base from our by the number of scores
activity what do you think is the meaning of the mean
of ungrouped data?
The formula for finding the mean is
Very good! Mean is the average of the scores and it is or
called the mathematical center of a distribution, What
is the formula for finding the mean of ungrouped data?

x-bar Ma’am
Very good! What do we call this sign class?

Good! Let us have some example.

Ex. 1 The weighted arithmetic mean of the numbers

12, 15, 16, 12, 15, 18, 18, 20, 12, and 18.
12 occurs 3 times, 15 occurs twice, 18
occurs 3 times, 16 once and 20 once
How many times that the numbers occurs?
The number of scores is 5
Very good! What is the number of scores?
(The students will go the board and
Thank you! Who wants to solve the weighted mean on solve the given problem)
the black board?
Yes Ma’am
Is his answer is correct?

Okay so let’s have an another example

Ex. 2 60 students were asked how many books they

had read over the past 12 months. The results are
listed in the frequency distribution below. Calculate
the mean number of books read by each student

Number of books Number of Students

(Frequency)
0 1
1 6
2 8
3 10
4 13
5 8
6 5
7 6
8 3

How we will determine the total number of books that We will multiply the number of books to
were read by the students? the students who read that particular
number of books
Very good! What is the total number of books read?

Thank you! What is the mean now?

60
Very good! Let’s proceed now to the next important The mean number of books read by each
measures of central tendency which is median. I have student
here a set of scores was 4 books
4, 8, 10, 9, 6, 5, 10, 15, 19, 24, 23, 14

What did you observe on the given number?

The numbers are not arrange from
Thank you. So, what we will going to do with this highest to lowest
numbers?
We will arrange the number from
Very good! And what is the next thing that we will do ascending to descending order
after arranging the numbers from ascending to
descending order? Solve for the value of median

What is the formula for finding the median? x=

̃ (N+1)/2

Will someone go to the board and look for the median (The students will go to the board and
of set of scores? solve the median value of the set of
scores)
Is the answer is right class?
Yes Ma’am
What is the definition of the median now?
The median is the arithmetic mean of
the two middle values or called as the
population of central value
Very good! Let’s proceed now to the last important
measures of central tendency which is the Mode

What is mode class?

The mode is the most important
Thank you! Is there a formula in finding the mode of frequently occurring score in the
ungrouped data class? ungrouped data

Good! Observed this set of scores class Ma’am there is no formula in finding the
2,5,5,6,8, 9 mode of ungrouped data
What is the most frequent scores that occurs in this
sets of numbers?

Thank you! And the number 5 is our mode since it Number 5 Ma’am because it appears
appears twice, and it is called as what kind of mode twice
class?

How about on the second sets of numbers It is called unimodal because there is
12, 29, 35, 36, 45, 45, 50, 53, 55, 55, 62, 73, 80 only one mode
What did you notice?

Thank you! So our mode is 45 and 50 since they I observed Ma’am that the 45 and 50
appear twice, and this mode is called what? appears twice

Very good! It is called bimodal since the mode on

the set of numbers are two
E. Application
Now class, I will group you into 2 groups I will
give each group a small folder that contain different
problem, you will answer the following question that
being asked, after that the one representative of the Yes Ma’am
group will go in front and discuss on how they solved Answer
the said problems. Understand class? Group 1 Group 2
22. 5, 30, 45 12.5, 15, 17
F. Generalization

What are the most important measures of

central tendency?

Define the following:

Find the mean, median and mode and

interpret the results
Determine the mean of the following set of
numbers:
40, 61, 95, 79, 9, 50, 80, 63, 109, 42

A student recorded her scores on weekly math

quizzes that were marked out of a possible ten
points her scores as follows:

8, 5, 8, 5, 7, 6, 7, 7, 5, 7, 5, 5, 6, 6, 9, 8, 9, 7, 9, 9, 6, 8,

What is the median and mode of her
scores on the weekly math quizzes?
