Let us Understand

The Filipino value system refers to the set of values that most Filipinos have historically held important in
their lives. This Philippine values system are made up of ideologies, moral codes, ethical
practices, etiquette and cultural and personal values that are promoted by society. As with any society
though, the values that an individual holds sacred can differ on the basis of religion, upbringing and other
factors.
As a general description, the distinct value system of Filipinos is based primarily in personal alliance
systems, especially those based in kinship, obligation, friendship, religion (particularly Christianity) and
commercial relationships.

BAHALA NA

Bahala na came from the word “Bathala or Batala” which according to the indigenous beliefs of the
tagalog people is the supreme deity who created the universe. The Bahala na or Trust in God behavior was
said to be of practice due to Batala who had the tendency to spoil mankind with his love and care. Hence,
people rely on Batala often giving rise to the attitude of “Bahala Na”. Up to the present time, most Filipinos
still practice Bahala na attitude especially in situations where one is clueless as to what he is aiming for or
is too lazy to consider doing anything by any means. This conviction to place destiny in God's hand is an
indication of how Filipinos are believers of the Supreme Being. This behavior also shows how Filipinos
are carefree and that they put their lives in destiny's grasp.

UTANG NA LOOB

Utang na loob (utang) is comprised two words “utang” meaning debt and “na loob” meaning inner-self is
one of the popular Filipino trademarks. The essence of this trait is that one should not forget to repay what
good deeds the others may have extended to him/her especially during difficult times. This obligation of
reciprocity of debt of gratitude is unlimited in nature. With this framework, individuals are sometimes
compelled to accomplish something in return for what others offer in kindness, but to some individuals this
gesture is their guide to have a prosperous life.

NINGAS COGON

Ningas means fire, burst, or ignition, while cogon is a grass that can be easily ignited. Ningas cogon implies
the quick or burst consumption of fire by the cogon grass, which is similar to Filipinos' method of
excitement just at the start of an activity and then rapidly losing eagerness soon after to proceed with it, or
to complete the task.

PADRINO SYSTEM
Padrino, is a Spanish word which literally means Patron-a person who gives financial or other support to a
person, organization, cause, or activity. This framework or support in the Filipino culture and legislative
issues is where one gets backing, underwriting, or political arrangement through family alliance (nepotism)
or fellowship (cronyism), as against one’s worth.

Love PROPIO/SELF-RESPECT

Love Propio came from the word “Amor propio” is a Spanish word which implies confidence. It is self-
appreciation regard or confidence that prevents an individual from biting the bullet. It incorporates
affectability to individual affront or outrages.

MAÑANA HABIT

The word mañana implies tomorrow or determined future time. This is one of the most negative traits that
Filipinos are accustomed to. It is otherwise called “delaying” in plain English and “mamaya na” in Filipino.
It could likewise imply postponing something until some other time. This propensity has caused Filipinos
to get lazier and less proficient in doing the task.

DELICADEZA

Delicadeza is a Spanish expression that implies modesty when deciphered in English. It is characterized as
a demonstration of being refined or fragile in tastes or habits. It could likewise mean appropriate
respectability or severe adherence to one side, good or moral.

HIYA

Disgrace or hiya is a typical Filipino worth. It is a feeling of social respectability and adjusting to cultural
standards of conduct. Filipinos accept they should satisfy the acknowledged principles of conduct and if
they neglect to do so they disgrace not only themselves but also their family. If somebody is freely
embarrassed, censured, or does not satisfy hopes, they feel disgrace and lose their confidence.

PAKIKISAMA/PAKIKIPAGKAPWA-TAO

Dependability or “Pakikisama” is another Filipino worth. This is a shared feeling of character and
cognizance of the other individual. It is treating others with regard and poise as an equivalent and not
somebody beneath the person.

Essentially, in business, it is a functional interpretation of one's pakikipagkapwa-tao because the

expectation is to offer things and administrations of significant worth to others to improve their ways of
life.

FAMILY ORIENTATION

The Philippines is known to be a family-focused country. The Filipinos perceive their family as a significant
social structure that one must deal with. They offer significance to the well-being and solidarity of one's
family. The Filipino family is unblemished to such an extent that it is basic for individuals from a similar
family to work for a similar organization.

The family is consistent with essential significance in the Philippines. As anyone might expect, most
business associations have the Filipino family as their model.

Filipino Family Values

Hospitality – alludes to amicable and liberal gathering and amusement of visitors, guests, or outsiders. This
characteristic is especially great in business, particularly in the administration area.

Flexibility, Resourcefulness, and the Ability to Survive – As a people who have been continually under
the standard of various incredible nations over the long run, and as a spot that is continually tormented by
normal cataclysms, Filipinos have built up a feeling of the cleverness of the capacity to get by with whatever
they have. Filipinos have the exceptional capacity to make something out of essentially nothing for
endurance.

Hard Work and Industry – Filipinos are universally regarded as excellent workers who perform well
whether the job involves physical labor and tasks or highly sophisticated technical functions. This
propensity for hard work, which often includes a highly competitive spirit is driven by the desire for
economic security and advancement for oneself and one’s family.
