Std: X Topic: 12.2: Electricity
Subject: Physics

Q. no.
Q 1. State Ohm’s law.

ans: Ohm’s law states that the electric current passing through a conductor is directly
proportional to the potential difference across it, provided that the temperature
remains constant.

Q 2. State the relation between resistance of a resistor and current passing through it.
ans: 1
• Rα
I
• Resistance of a resistor is inversely proportional to the current passing
through it.

Q 3. State and explain any two factors that can cause a change in the electrical resistance of a
conductor.
ans: • length of the conductor (Resistance is directly proportional to the length of
the conductor, R ∝ l )
• area of cross-section of the conductor (Resistance is inversely proportional to
1
the area of cross-section of the conductor, R ∝ )
A
• on the nature of the material of the conductor (resistance of different
conductor is different even if they are of same length and cross-section )
• temperature (Resistance is directly proportional to the temperature, R ∝T)
(any two)

Q 4. State two characteristic of a series circuit.

ans: The characteristic of a series circuit are
• The current is the same in every part of the circuit or the same current through
each resistor connected in series.
• The equivalent resistance of the combination is larger than the largest of the
individual resistance.
• The equivalent resistance of the combination is equal to the sum of their
individual resistances.
• The total potential difference across the combination is the sum of potential
difference across the individual resistance.
Q 5. The voltage-current (V-I) graph of a metallic conductor at two different temperatures T 1 and
T 2 is shown below. At which temperature is the resistance higher? Give reason for your
answer.

ans: At T 1
because slope of V-I graph represents resistance and graph T 1 has steeper slope
(greater resistance)

Q 6. A piece of wire having resistance R is cut into three equal parts.

i. How does the resistance of each part compare with the resistance of original wire?
ii. If the three parts are connected in parallel, how will the resistance of this combination
compare with the resistance of original wire?
ans: 1
i. Resistance of each part becomes of the original resistance.

ii. = + +

R
∴Rp =

1
Resistance of the parallel combination is of the original resistance.

Q 7. The resistance offered by each bulb of the fairy light shown below is
20 Ω.
Calculate
(i) the total resistance due to 5 such bulbs of the fairy light.
(ii) If potential difference of 50 V is applied to its terminal, calculate the current
flowing through it.
(iii) What would happen if one of the bulbs got fused or turned dead? Also state what
needs to be done in such situation.
ans: (i) As bulbs are connected in series,
Total resistance( R s )= R 1 + R 2 + R 3 + R 4 +R 5
∴ R s = 20 + 20 + 20 + 20 + 20
= 100 Ω

(ii) Given: Potential difference (V) = 50 V, Resistance (R) = 100 Ω

Current (I) = ?
V
Since, I =
R
50
∴I =
100
∴ I = 0.5A

(iii)  If any one of the bulbs got fused or turned dead, the circuit gets broken
and the fairy light won’t work.
 We need to test each bulb to find which has fused, and then replace the
dead bulb with a new bulb.

Q 8. An aluminium wire of cross-section 3 x 10-4 m2 has a length of 51 m. If the resistivity of

aluminium is 2.6 x 10-8ohm.m, what would be the resistance of the wire?
ans: Given: length of wire (L) = 51 m, resistivity (ρ ) = 2.6 x 10-8 ohm.m,
Area of cross-section = 3 x 10-4 m2, Resistance (R) = ?
Since,
L
Rρ=
A
51
∴ R = 2.6 x 10-8 x
3 x 10−4
∴ R = 2.6 x 17 x 10−4
=∴ R 44.2 x 10−4 Ω
Q 9. A student performs an experiment and plots the V-I graph of series and parallel combination
of two resistors. Which graph represents series combination of resistors? Justify your
answer.

ans: Graph A represents series combination because

• graph A has greater slope which means greater resistance.
• resistance is higher in series combination than its parallel combination.

Q 10. Two resistors of 3 Ω and 5 Ω are connected in parallel. A potential difference of 9 V is

applied across their terminals using a battery and the plug key of the circuit is closed.
(i) Draw a circuit diagram representing the above given information.
(ii) If the given resistors are replaced by a single new resistor such that the current in
the circuit remains unchanged, what should be the resistance of this new resistor?
ans: (i)

(ii) The equivalent resistance (R) for resistors connected in parallel is given by
1 1 1
= +
R R R
1 2
1 1 1
∴ = +
R 5 3
∴=R 1.875Ω
Q 11. Find the effective resistance between the points A and B in the network shown in the figure.

ans: 6 Ω and 3 Ω are connected in parallel

Equivalent resistance is 1= 1 + 1
Rp 6 3
1 3
∴ =
Rp 6
∴ Rp =Ω
2

Effective resistance between the points A and B = 2 Ω + 2 Ω = 4 Ω
