Electrolysis of Water: With Pencils and A 9V Battery Group 3

The document describes an experiment to observe the electrolysis of water using pencils and a 9V battery. Salt water, baking soda water, and plain water were used as electrolyte solutions. Bubbles formed at the pencil electrodes placed in the solutions, with hydrogen and oxygen gases produced from the baking soda solution but chlorine from the salt solution. The experiment aimed to differentiate the electrolysis processes using different catalyst solutions.

INTRODUCTION

Electrolysis of water is the decomposition of water into oxygen and hydrogen gas due to the passage of
an electric current. This technique can be used to make (hydrogen gas) and breathable oxygen. As
hydrogen is an important industrial commodity, by far most industrial methods produce from hydrogen
from natural gas instead, in the steam reforming process

OBJECTIVES:

1. The objective of the experiment is to observe the process of electrolysis from the salt water
solution, Baking soda and water.
2. By separating the Oxygen (O) and Hydrogen (H) in H2O (water).
3. Differentiate the three solutions in terms of their Electrolysis.
MATERIALS

Table Salt Battery

(20 grams) (9V)

Baking Soda Crocodile Clip

(20 grams) and
Battery Holder

Sharpened Plastic
Pencils Containers
(2 pieces) (3 pieces)

600 ml Water
PROCEDURES

1. Pour some warm water approximately 200 ml in the empty plastic containers.

2. In the first container, put the 20 grams of salt in 200 ml of water

. In second container, put the 20 grams of baking soda in 200 ml of water.

3. Sharpen both the pencils at both their ends, so that’s four pencil points in all.

4. Connect both nodes of the battery to a different pencil using the crocodile clips.

5. Put the free pencils ends into the 3 different solutions, and don’t let the tips touch the surface.
6. Observe the process of Electrolysis using different catalyst.
CONCLUSION

SALT WATER
BAKING SODA

Using Salt (NaCl) in an electrolyte solution results in chlorine gas rather than oxygen it is because of the
competing half reaction, but when we use baking soda the hydrogen and oxygen will stream from the
oppositely charged electrodes, the oxygen and hydrogen stream from the oppositely charged electrodes
because of the correct electrodes and correct electrolyte, the oxygen will collect all the positively
charged electrode and the hydrogen will collect all the negatively charged electrode.
