LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET IN HEALTH GRADE 9

Name of Learner: Grade & Section: Date:

Learning Competency: MELC 20 Explains the principles of wound dressing.

Code: (H9IS-lllc.d40).

Do you know that…

Learning the purpose and different kinds of dressing and bandaging will be very useful to you,
your family, loved ones and even people not related to you. Since accidents or unintentional injuries
happen anytime, anywhere and to anyone, it is recommendable that one learns to do basic kinds of
dressing and bandaging to unintentional injuries.
A wound is a cut or break in the continuity of any tissue caused by injury or operation. It may
consist of a tear, uncommon cut, erosion, etc. where the top layer of the skin is breached or damaged
(Morris, 2019). Open wounds require immediate first aid to prevent further damage. Examples are
puncture, abrasion, incision, laceration and avulsion among others.
Dressing is an essential element of standard wound care. Dressing is any material that is applied to a
wound with the aim to control bleeding and prevent possible infection. Dressings must be sterile but in
emergency situations where sterile dressings are not available, any clean, soft cloth may be used as
substitute for dressing.
The objective of dressing wounds is to promote healing. The procedure includes cleaning, disinfection and
protection of the wound while respecting the rules of hygiene. Below are the steps to follow in doing
dressing on a wound.

14 Steps in Dressing Surgery Wound by Kramer Staywell

The choice of dressing depends on the anatomical and pathophysiological characteristics of the
wound. Contemporary wound dressings provide additional benefits, such as antimicrobial properties and
pain relief (Obagi, 2019).
Unintentional injuries if not given proper aid will likely to bring bigger harm to the victims. Open
wounds like puncture caused by nails or needles, abrasions which result in scraping ones skin, incisions
which is common in kitchen like cuts etc., lacerations from mishandling of tools and avulsion which is a
forcible tearing of tissues need dressing and bandaging to prevent infections and further injury to the
person. The most common way to treat some of the unintentional injuries is cold compress and cold pads.
There are different techniques in bandaging and ways to manage wounds.

ACTIVITY A: EASY

Directions: Open wounds usually require dressing to prevent infection and further injury to the victims.
Choose and encircle the letter which best describes the different kinds of open wounds.

1. A piercing wound caused by nails, needles, and other pointed objects.

A. Incision B. Puncture C. Avulsion D. Abrasion
2. It is a cut caused by knife, broken glass or any sharp object.
A.Laceration B. Avulsion C. Incision D. Avulsion
3. A forcible tearing or partial tearing away of tissues.
A. Avulsion B. Abrasion C. Incision D. Laceration
4. It is caused by rubbing or scraping the skin against a rough surface.
A.Laceration B. Incision C. Abrasion D. Puncture
5. This results from mishandling tools and other incidents that breaks or tears the soft tissues.
A.Laceration B. Puncture C. Incision D. Avulsion

Activity B: ARRANGE AND DEFINE (AVERAGE)

Directions: Arrange the scrambled letters in Column A to form words related to first aid. Put your answers
on Column B. Then connect them to their correct definition or purpose in Column C.

Column A Column B Column C

SINGDERS ________________________ A. Can be used as cold compress
CLOD PRESCOMS ________________________ B. A cut in the skin
OLDC PDA ________________________ C. A sterile cloth to cover wounds
NABGADES ________________________ D. Used to reduce swelling
DOUNW ________________________ E. Used to apply pressure to stop
bleeding

ACTIVITY C: Performance Task (DIFFICULT)

Directions: There are five steps in dressing a wound. Read them carefully and then choose the correct
arrangement of steps (5 points).

A. Clean the wound.

B. Wash and dry your hands.
C. Apply the medication and dressing
D. Let the wound dry.
E. Get the right wound-care-supplies.

After choosing the correct procedure in dressing a wound, the learner will follow these steps and
show how they do this in front of their parents or guardians through video (optional, if there are available
gadgets). Their parents or guardians will give the learners the rating based on the indicators presented.
The criterion for assessing this is as follows:

INDICATORS OF PERFORMANCE 5 4 3 2 1
Performs the procedures correctly and with accuracy.
Use of sterilized/proper materials.
Neatness of work.

Bandaging is synonymous with dressing since there are wounds that need dressing as well as
bandaging. Bandage is any material that is used to hold the dressing in place and provides pressure to the
wound. Unlike dressings, bandages may not be sterile.
When applying bandage, you must remember the following basic rules:
Not too tight but not too loose. All dressings must be held snugly in place, but the bandage should not be
too constricting that it restricts blood flow to the affected part. The bandage should hold the dressing
snugly so that it does not slip or move around the wound.
Do not leave loose ends as they can get caught on objects when the victim moves. Common loose
ends include that of tape, gauze and cloth.
Leave the tips of fingers and toes uncovered. The fingers and toes must be exposed, if possible,
to observe changes in skin color that may indicate possible problems with circulation, as well as to allow
easier neurologic assessment. Pale, pain or bluish-colored skin all indicate too tight bandage. However, if
the digits are burned, they should be covered.
Cover all edges of the dressing to reduce possible contamination.
It is best to apply bandage to a large area of the extremity to ensure uniform pressure.
There are different bandaging techniques that are used for specific types of injuries.

In doing bandaging, consider its two phases:

An open phase bandaging which is used for wounds on top and back of the head, chest, back, and foot
and as arm sling.
A cravat phase bandaging which is used for wounds that need extra support such as those on the eye,
forehead, ear, cheek, jaw, shoulder, hip, arm, leg, elbow, knee, and palm. It is emphasized that the
narrower the cravat the greater pressure it gives.
