Possessive Forms of Nouns

Possessive nouns are used to show ownership or possession.

We follow these rules when we change nouns to their possessive forms.


1. An apostrophe and an s (‘s) are added to singular nouns that do not end in s.
Examples: a cousin’s work the dog’s tail
2. An apostrophe and an s (‘s) are added to plural nouns that do not end in s.
Examples: oxen’s yoke children’s toys
3. Only the apostrophe is added to a plural noun ending in s.
Examples: the horses’ neighs the girls’ ribbons
4. An apostrophe and an s (‘s) are added to most singular proper nouns ending in s, as well as to
those ending in x or z.
Examples: Mrs. Cruz’s car James’s poems
5. An apostrophe only is added to a plural proper noun ending in s.
Examples: the Santoses’ house the Gonzaleses’ children
6. An apostrophe is added to proper names that end in eez sound.
Examples: Ulysses’ shield Xerxes’ name
7. An apostrophe and an s (‘s) are added to letters and numerals.
Examples: GMA’s visit 2007’s tragedies
8. Use the word of for inanimate nouns.
Examples: the color of the car the fruits of the trees
9. We add an apostrophe and an s (‘s) to the last component word of a compound noun whether it
is closed, open, or hyphenated.
Examples: my mother-in-law’s house
a student assistant’s time
