NUTRITION THERAPY

• Recognize the methods used to adapt a normal diet to
treat a specific clinical disorder
• Apply the nutrition care process in the management of
disease conditions
• Identify the most common therapeutic diets used in clinical
care
• Appreciate the role of Nutritionist-Dietitian in patient care

Principles of diet therapy
• Treatment for a patient that involves the modification of
food intake
• Principal means of therapy
• Supports the overall therapeutic program
• Supports other modes of treatment
• Modified diets are preventive measures

Purpose of therapeutic diets


• Maintain good nutritional status
• Correct deficiencies or disease
• Provide rest to the body
• Help metabolize the nutrients
• Make changes in body weight
• Prescribe specialized dietary regimes or meal plans

Goals of therapeutic diets


• To attain these goals, a normal diet may be modified
according to these categories:
• Nutrient level, ex. 500 mg sodium, 30 g fat, 60 g protein
• Energy/caloric intake, ex. 1000 kcal, 2500 kcal
• Specific non-nutrient substance or metabolite, ex. gluten,
purine, cholesterol
• Texture and flavor, ex. bland diet, soft diet, liquid diet, high
fiber diet
