OMICRON PTL Siemens 7SK85 V7.90 Motor PTT User Manual

1. General
This user manual describes details of testing Siemens 7SK85 relays with the OMICRON
Protection Test Template. General information on the usage of OMICRON Protection Testing Library
items can be found in the OMICRON PTL user manual.

The template has been tested with the following relay:

Manufacturer: Siemens
Model: 7SK85
Firmware Version: 7.90

2. Software and Hardware Requirements

To use this template, you must have a valid test license for the OMICRON Test Universe 4.10 software or
higher versions and the following test modules:
• Control Center
• Quick CMC
• Ramping
• Pulse Ramping
• Overcurrent
• State Sequencer
• Advanced Differential
• Advanced Power

A CMC test set with six current and three voltage outputs is required to use the full functionality of this
PTT.

3. Hardware
There are multiple possibilities of wiring a Siemens 7SK85 relay to a CMC test set. The advised
connections are shown in
Figure 1. These connections are the default settings in the Hardware Configuration of the PTT.

Almost all functions use by default Current Output A. The only exceptions which use Current Output B are
the functions 49 Thermal overload protection and 87M Differential protection.

Although the functions listed above are not supported by the Protection Test Template, the
Relay Parameter Section of the XRIO Converter includes most protection parameters of the relay.

5. XRIO Converter
The Test Object already contains the Siemens 7SK85 XRIO Converter, which includes setting
parameters of the modelled protection relay. The setting parameters are built as an image of the Siemens
DIGSI5 V7.90 software.
General information about the converter structure can be found in the OMICRON PTL user manual.

6. Specific Protection Tests

6.1 Motor Starting

6.1.1 Locked Rotor Trip Time

The State Sequencer test module is used to test the trip time of the Motor Starting function in case where
the supervision of a signal from an external device is used for rotation detection. The >Rotor Locked
signal is simulated using a CMC's binary output. The fault currents are set above the parameter
Curr.thresh.starting to arm the function.

6.1.2 Load-Jam protection

The Ramping and the State Sequencer module is used for testing this function. Every test includes two
prefault states. The first one simulates a motor startup and the second one a motor running condition,
before the fault occurs.

6.2 87M Motor Differential Protection

If the Starting Detection (_:11041:106) functionality is used, prefault states need to be applied manually
to the following test modules for testing the operating characteristic:
• 87M Differential operating characteristic A-N
• 87M Differential operating characteristic A-B-C

Set the "Prefault time" longer than the value of the parameter Max. perm. Start. time (_:11041:109) and
adjust the "Prefault current" if necessary.

6.3 32 Power Protection

6.3.1 Pickup Test

The pickup value for each stage type is tested with the Advanced Power test module using Power
Ramps. The absolute value of the active/reactive power is increased until the relay picks up.

6.3.2 Trip Times

The trip times can be tested with the Advanced Power test module using Power Shots. Each test module
includes pre-defined test shots for the first two stages of a certain type. Please check and adjust the test
shots if necessary. Test shots of not active stages can be deleted.
