MY FAIR LADY

(Reaction Paper)
Audrey plays Eliza, a flower girl. Professor Higgins approached her and asked, "Why
can't it be English?" Higgins could tell who was who based on their accents. Only persons from
upper middle- or upper-class society had the opportunity to learn proper English at the time.
People also spoke with varied accents or dialects depending on where they were born. Eliza, for
example, talked with a Cockney accent that couldn't enunciate the vowels a,e,i,o,u correctly.
Now I realize that a person's accent has a significant impact on them. We can learn about a
person's past, where he or she comes from, and even their social rank by listening to them
speak.
Languages have a significant impact on our lives. This reminds me of what people in
Taiwan do on occasion. Residents in Taiwan's southern regions are considered to be more out
of style. Though I do not believe that defining a person based on whether or not they are
trendy or wealthy is a proper way to do so, this had become a cliché that many people were
unaware of. And I notice this at the conclusion of the film. Eliza eventually became a lady
thanks to Professor Higgins' teaching. She was fluent in English. She didn't scream or make a
"yaw" sound. She spoke as if she belonged to the upper crust of society. Even when she
returned to her hometown, no one had recognized her. She wasn't the flower vendor down the
block anymore, shouting at someone who had spilt her flowers. But I know something about
her has been constant: she is a good girl. She is just amazing. She isn't a scrooge. She takes
good care of her father. She earns a living by selling flowers and is not reliant on others.
Language has tremendous power. It has the ability to transform a flower girl into a fair lady. It
has the ability to elevate a person from the working class to the upper class. Language is similar
to our daily lives. We talk about our lives and what we do. We make friends via conversing. By
talking, we tell our own narrative. Languages serve as symbols for us. I speak Chinese to make it
clear that I am Chinese. It is inextricably linked to our life. I felt a little sorry for the people who
had been singled out because of their speech. It's the same as when we judge somebody based
on their appearance. When we define a person based on their speech, we do the same thing.
The fabric we're wearing is language. I should really think large about it, and I should also try
not to fall prey to the assumption that the guy will be bad because of where he comes from.
It was a lot of fun for me. And the music in it is one of my favorites. Eliza's song
"Wouldn't it be nice" is one of my favorites. In my head, the song's rhyme kept repeating itself.
I believe that music may enhance the beauty of language!
