What is happening in the year this

document was produced? Why is the
Filipino patriots rose up in rebellion in the

fall of 1896 against Spanish power, which
had ruled the Philippines since the
sixteenth century. The 1896 uprising,
which was led by Emilio Aguinaldo
(1869–1964), propelled the Filipinos into
both an anticipated war with Spain and an
unexpected conflict with the United
States. The militant Katipunan group
under the leadership of Emilio Aguinaldo,
who rose to prominence as a military and
political leader, coordinated the majority
of the Filipino nationalist uprising against
Spain during the Philippine Revolution.
In an attempt to win Rizal's support,
Bonifacio dispatched an ambassador to
Dapitan in June 1896. However, Rizal
declined to take part in an armed uprising.
A Spanish friar's discovery of Katipunan
on August 19, 1896, marked the
beginning of the Philippine Revolution.

P What is the author's purpose for

creating this source?
(Purpose) By highlighting the hardship brought on
by the Spaniards to the formerly
prosperous and abundant nation, the
author hopes to inspire the Filipino people
to struggle for freedom. The author also
hoped to encourage readers to take certain
steps that would aid in their battle for
liberation from the Spaniards. He exhorts
the Filipino people to unify in their
feelings to build the strength they need to
defeat the Spaniards. To assure the
people's unwavering support, it was
crucial for the revolutionaries to inform
the Filipinos of what Spain had been
doing to the archipelago.

P What do you know about the author and
their background?
(Point of View) Before being involved in revolutionary
action, Bonifacio worked as a courier and
warehouse manager. He was born into a
low-income family in Manila and
received no formal schooling. But he was
a good reader. Bonifacio favored total
secession from Spain. He established the
Katipunan in Manila in 1892, emulating
the Masonic order's structure and ritual.
Although the Katipunan first expanded
slowly, by 1896 it was thought to have
100,000 members and branches. In
August 1896, Emilio Aguinaldo, one of
Bonifacio's lieutenants, continued the
long-planned uprising on Luzon while he
was forced to flee to Montalban in the
north after his men were routed by
Spanish troops.

Y What main idea is this source trying to

convey?
(Historical The author's intention in writing this
Significance) article is to inform Filipinos about the
mistreatment of Filipinos who immigrated
to Spain. The author also wants to offer
some ideas for getting Filipinos some
justice and independence so they aren't
held captive by the Spanish. To build the
power they needed to combat the
Spaniards, he urged certain Filipinos to
unite in emotion. To maintain unwavering
support from the populace, the
revolutionaries considered it essential to
inform the Filipinos of what Spain had
been doing to the archipelago. In
conclusion, Bonifacio wishes to warn
Filipinos to be vigilant against future
abuse by the Spanish. Filipinos are prone
to mistreatment in the past, But when
Andres Bonifacio's credit, "Ang dapat
mabatid ng mga Tagalog," appeared, the
Filipinos were given the chance to enjoy
independence.

Does this source reflect change over

time? How?
It reflect change over time because now, I
do not think we can be colonized again
due to the fact that we are aware about
our freedom and our national heroes are
our inspiration because of their love for
the country and for the next generations.

Why is this source historically

significant? What's the "So What?"
It is becoming more and more obvious
that the relegation won't endure forever.
The younger generation of Filipinos has
already started to understand more about
the significance of Bonifacio Day and
Rizal Day, and as they do so, they may
come to understand that choosing their
own heroes is entirely up to them. Not all
of the spontaneous works were in support
of freedom, but they did deplore the
protests of those who wanted to grow
food without ploughing up the earth. It
doesn't matter if this fight is moral,
physical, or both; it just has to be a
struggle. Power never has and never will
budge on anything without a demand.
