He was born into a low-income family in Manila and received no formal schooling. But he was a good reader. Bonifacio favored total secession from Spain. He established the Katipunan in Manila in 1892, emulating the Masonic order's structure and ritual. Although the Katipunan first expanded slowly, by 1896 it was thought to have 100,000 members and branches. In August 1896, Emilio Aguinaldo, one of Bonifacio's lieutenants, continued the long-planned uprising on Luzon while he was forced to flee to Montalban in the north after his men were routed by Spanish troops.

The younger generation of Filipinos has already started to understand more about the significance of Bonifacio Day and Rizal Day, and as they do so, they may come to understand that choosing their own heroes is entirely up to them. Not all of the spontaneous works were in support of freedom, but they did deplore the protests of those who wanted to grow food without ploughing up the earth. It doesn't matter if this fight is moral, physical, or both; it just has to be a struggle. Power never has and never will budge on anything without a demand.
