    Acquaintance with different equipments used in fish processing laboratory.

    Fish processing laboratory helps us to know chemical composition of fish and determine
    the degree of spoilage of fish. Different types of equipments used in fish processing
    laboratory are given below:

     Oven
     Muffle furnace
     Desiccators
     Kjeldahl apparatus
     Soxhlet apparatus
     Ph meter
     Water bath
     Hot plate
     Distilled water plant
     Centrifuge machine
     Stirrer
     Electronic balance
     Crucible

    Description and function:

    Oven: Oven is used for determination of moisture by maintaining temperature at


    105°C for 24 hours.

    Muffle furnace: Muffle furnace is used to determine the ash content of fish by
    maintaining temperature at 550°C for 6 hours.

    Desiccator: Desiccator is used to prevent the absorbing moisture from surrounding


    air. It contains desiccant. The important desiccants are Cacl2, silica gel, silica
    granules etc. The sample taken from the oven and kept in desiccator to cool at room
    temperature to avoid the absorption of moisture from surrounding environments.

    Kjeldahl apparatus: kjeldahl apparatus is used for the determination of protein. It


    has three units-
     Digestion chamber
     Distillation chamber
     Titration chamber

    Soxhlet apparatus: it is used to determine the lipid content of any sample. it has
    three parts:
     Round bottom flask
     Main body
     Condenser
    Ph meter: it is used to determine the ph of the sample.

    Water bath: water bath is used to determination of lipid. 0-100°C is controlled in


    the water bath.

    Hot plate: hot plate is used to heat the sample. It is a normal heater which has a
    covering and a metal plate. The sample is kept on the metal plate to heat.

    Distilled water plant: it is used to prepare distill water which is used in various
    experiment.

    Centrifuge machine: it is used for homogenous mixing of the solution.

    Stirrer: stirrer is a rod like structure which is used for homogenous mixing of the
    solution.

    Electronic Balance: Balance is used to weight the sample accurately. The weight of
    very small amount of sample can be determined by electronic balance. It is also
    called sensitive balance.

    Crucible: crucible is used to contain the sample for different experiment.

    Ice plant: it is used to prepare ice block in different size. A tube is attached with ice
    box which supply the continuous water in ice box during ice preparation.
