Type of Family Structure


The family structure is extended wherein it extends beyond the traditional nuclear
family. The abovementioned family is comprised of married parents with their offspring.
Additionally, one child is already married but is legally separated with three children
living in the same household. This type of family is seen to provide a sense of
participation and dignity for the older family members and it also provides continuity
between generations.

5. Dominant Family Member

In terms of decision making and in matters of healthcare, the family is considered to be


patriarchal in nature. The father, Mr. Henry D. Solatorio Sr. exhibits supreme authority
among members of the family.

6. General Family Relationship

Solatorio family doesn’t have any serious problem aside from having little
misunderstanding occasionally from the parents regarding financial problem that cannot
suffice and provide the individual needs of all the members of the family such as for
education and financing for agri-business. On the flipside, they are well-oriented and
well-disciplined individuals in a way that their offspring helps in carrying different tasks
in the household. Moreover, they exemplify the value of being hospitable to relatives
and other visitors.

In most situations, the accumulated income from the working members of the family is
deemed to be sufficient enough to cater the expenses related to food, clothing and
shelter. There are instances where shortage of resources face the family but are
gradually solved through finding other means. The income is sufficient to feed the family
three times a day, provide decent clothing for all members, and a sustainable shelter.

5. Relationship of the family to a larger community

Solatorio family significantly considers its substantial role in the aspect of socialization
and influencing societal growth. It also develops values that contribute to society. This
family participates in activities initiated by various government and community groups
and inks its participation to programs related to health education, agricultural
innovations, spiritual development activities, and cultural gatherings.

C. Environmental Factors

1. Housing

a. Adequacy of living space

The area of the house is enough to accommodate the number of people living on it. It
features 5 bedrooms for 8 people, a balcony, a living room, a kitchen and a dining area
that accommodates their daily needs.

b. Sleeping arrangement
The bedrooms are occupied by the following:

 Bedroom 1 – Parents
 Bedroom 2 – Eldest sister and her daughter
 Bedroom 3- Son
 Bedroom 4- Youngest daughter
 Bedroom 5- Grandchildren

c Adequacy of the furniture

They have enough appliances to cater their individual physiological, social, and
entertainment needs like television, refrigerator and radio. As for the furniture, it is
enough for them to individually use.

d. Presence of insects and rodents

Breeding sites of mosquitos and flies are not evident in the area because there are no
garbage and stagnant water in the area. Rats and cockroaches or any rodents are not
visible in the house.

e. Presence of accident hazards

The house features pointed and sharp objects such as chairs and tables that may
possibly bring hazard and accident to the members of the family especially the young
ones. Additionally, poison and medicine are improperly kept, steep stairs, and fall
hazards are evident in the presence of possible falling objects found around the house.

f. Food storage and cooking facilities

The family gets its food from buying in the market and other needs related to food are
supplemented by their household garden. The food is properly stored in a refrigerator
for future use. The family has its own stove to use for cooking strategically placed for
safety.

The family consumes water from the water system suitable and enough for drinking,
washing dishes, doing laundry, and other household chores.

h. Toilet facility

The family has their own toiletry readily connected within the premises of the house. It is
made of concrete and has adequate supply of water. It is well-conditioned and promotes
pleasant odor and cleanliness.

i. Garbage/disposal

The family is responsive to solid waste management. The family segregates their
garbage and every week, a garbage truck from their municipal government collects their
waste. Aside from this, it has its own compost pit for biodegradable waste.
j. Drainage

The drainage system in the community is not a problem because there is a canal that
was built years ago so that the water won’t be stagnant.

All members of the family are physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially fit. As of the
moment, all members have no prevailing diseases/illnesses.

E. Value Placed on Prevention of Disease

1. Immunization status of Children

All members of the family had undergone complete immunization and considers to be
fully immunized.

2. Use of Other Preventive Services

All members of the family have undergone vaccine against polio. Qualified members for
Covid-19 vaccine have already received their first dose.

Family Health Nursing Problem:

Inability to provide a home environment which is conducive to health maintenance and


personal development due to ignorance and ineffective preventive measures including
insufficient knowledge on possible physical hazards and its hazardous effects to once
health.

Health threat

The identified nursing health problem is classified as health threat since it promotes
diseases and/or injuries that prevent the family to realize their health potential.
Moreover, it is a threat since the environment in which Solatorio family lives is prone to
accidents/injuries that may result to failure to maintain wellness of all members of the
family.
