Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: All about the Continents and Oceans!!

Objectives:
Students will be able to locate the continents and oceans on a map.
Students will be able to describe where the continents and oceans are on a map and label them
either using numbers or letters.

State Standards: Grade 3 History Standards

Standard 1: Use maps and globes to categorize places and regions by their human and physical
conditions
- 3.1.1.AG Utilize an alphanumeric grid to locate the continents and oceans.

Context: I am teaching this lesson to give student the basic understanding of the world that they
need for the classes in the future. Before this lesson the students learned about places like South
Carolina and the United States. The students should have a pretty good knowledge about North
America, but I do not expect them to have an understating on the entire map of the world. With
this lesson the students will gain a better understanding of the geography of the world and will be
prepared to learn more about the specific geography of the world. I am teaching the students
about the continents and oceans so they will be prepared to further their knowledge in their
future classrooms. I hope that they gain a better understanding of each of these and they by the
end of this lesson will be able to label the continents and oceans using an alphanumeric grid.

Data: Students will be grouped into groups of 3 or 4 depending on how the numbers work out.
The day before the blended learning lesson I will pass out the map quiz located below. This will
be a pretest and they will get this quiz again at the end on the lesson to see how much they have
learned and grown. The students will then be placed into groups based on what they already
know based on the quiz. I will then use the data from the activities and the Kahoot to see what
activities need to change or how I can improve my blended learning lessons in the future!
The “pretest” I am using is on the top of the next page…

Procedures:
Introduction (20 minutes):
This lesson is going to be the first thing we do in the morning. I decided to switch up the
schedule so that way it would not be rushed, and I would be able to allow more time for
the activities if I need to. When the students come in, I will ask them to put their things
away and to get out their Social Studies notebooks. They will not be surprised because I
told them the day before about this and they know what to expect. As they are coming in,
they will notice on their desk that there is a map. I will also have this map on the board.
And on the board, there is a Warm-up that says, “Fill in the continents and oceans you
already know.” This will allow them to get use to the map and let me see what they
already know. I will walk around while they are doing this, they will get approximately 5
minutes to do this. After this, on the board, I will explain to them where each continent
and ocean is on the map. Then together we will do a fill in the map activity on the board,
and I will have one student at a time come up and fill in the continents and oceans (I will
do this using Smart Notebook). At the end of the introduction, I will play the Continents
and Oceans Song to help further their understanding of continents and oceans.

Teacher Directed (15 minutes):

In this section of the lesson, we will start by going over the continents and oceans once
again. We will take about five minutes to review using the smart board. On the board I
will have the map of the world projected. I will then point to the place that I want to
label, and I will have the students in the class tell me what the name is, and I will write
the name on the board. After this I am going to allow the student to play a game, I will
also be playing the game with them. This game is called “Roll a Map” the idea of this
game is to get all of the places on the map filled in correctly using numbers. The class
will have 2 die and when it is there turn, they will roll the die. They will then look at the
numbers they have and add them together, on the worksheet each student is given there
are numbers for each continent and ocean (numbers 1-12). If they roll a 2, they will label
South America, and so on and so forth. I will also be playing the game, but it will be a
competition. Students vs. Teacher. I think that this will get the students engaged and
involved because it seems like anytime anything is a competition the students are more
engaged. At the end if the students finish first, they all get something, if I finish first
nothing happened for me it is just a fun activity to do. But I will make sure the students
finish first to make it more fun for them.

Here is the work sheet we are using…

Collaborative (15 minutes):
In this section the student will be in groups of 3 or 4. They will be working together to
create thier version of a map using paper, pencil, and coloring supplies. They will need to
work together and make sure that they have all seven continents and five oceans labeled.
After they are done, they will need to put their maps in the bin that I will have labeled for
that section. They will then have two options for things they can do. They can work on
the continent and ocean word search as a group, or they can play the online game that is
linked on one of their iPads. At the end of the lesson which ever group has the highest
score on the game gets to pick out a prize from the prize bin. The students need to take a
screen shot of their score on the game and they will post it to the appropriate section on
google classroom.

Independent Digital (20 minutes):

During the Independent Digital part of the lesson the student will watch the video linked.
The student will get their iPads and I will have the link listed on the google classroom. It
will be posted under the “independent activity” post. The video they will watch is a video
on the five oceans. The video is about 5-6 minutes long and it goes over what the oceans
are, where they are, and gives a few facts about the oceans. At the end of the video there
will be a question posted on the google classroom and it will be a response question. The
question is going to ask them to name the five oceans of the world. After they have done
this the students will receive a coloring sheet and they will have to color and label the
oceans. They will then turn it into the bin that I will have set up at this station.

Closure (20-minutes):
At the end of the class/lesson, I will project a Kahoot game onto the board for the student
to play. They will use their iPads and the code on the board to login to the game. This
will be a 12 question Kahoot game (one question for each continent and ocean). The
question will be the entire map and then one place on the map will have a letter on it. The
questions will say “Which Continent/Ocean does letter A represent” then the student will
choose the correct answer from the ones listed. It will be multiple choice. This Kahoot
should be a review for them, based on what they learned throughout the class period. I
will be able to use the results from the Kahoot to see which student are understanding the
material and which students need some assistance or extra help. Once the game is over, I
will use our classroom reward system for the top three winners. The top three winners get
to choose a prize out of the prize bucket, and the prizes will have something to do with
the lesson, for example mini globes etc. To end the lesson, I will play the Continents and
Oceans Song just for another review. Finally, at the very end they will take the “pretest”
again but this time it will be an actual grade to see what they have learned.

Rationale:
Smart Notebook:
Using a Smart Notebook lesson is a way to teach the material to the student in a simple
PowerPoint like way, but it is also interactive at the same time. Not only does Smart
Notebook give me the ability to use lecture-based teaching but it also gives me
opportunities to create interactive part for hands on learning for the students. Using smart
notebook is good for all different learners because there are so many different parts of
smart notebook that can be used to help each student in their own way. There is also a
took created by smart notebook for you to be able to share your lesson to your class. They
can have it on their own iPads/laptop and interact with it that way. So, if someone in the
class has an IEP you can use it based on that. On the lesson there is a portion of it where
the student come up and drags the correct name to the place on the map, this gets students
engaged and involved. With Smart Notebook the lesson is created by me so I can make
sure that my students are getting the appropriate information and it will benefit them and
me because I will teach the material better because it is my own lesson but also, they will
learn better because they will be comfortable and use to my lessons and teaching style.
The larger board is also a plus because it helps some students focus and listen better
rather than it being on their personal devices. It is also good for student who have vision
impairments because some can see easier on a larger scale.

Google Classroom:
I chose google classroom to use in a few portions of the lesson because that is what the
students are used to. I think by using something they are used to using it betters the
learning outcome for the students. On google classroom they should know how to answer
responses and how to use each part of it. Google classroom is great for all different types
of learners because it is simple and easy to navigate for the students. There are different
parts of google classroom that are very inclusive and allow for all learned to use it. I think
it is a good tool and it is even better because the student should know how to use this
tool. The students also like to use google classroom do it makes it more fun and
interactive for them!

Oceans for Kids Video:

This video goes over all of the oceans of the world. Using this video, the student will be
able to learn a few facts about the oceans, where they are, and their names. I liked this
video because it went through all of these things. Some students learn better by watching
videos so that is why I chose to incorporate this into the lesson. Closed captioning is
available for the hard of hearing students and there are many different ways this video
can be used by all learners. That is why I like videos so much, there was a lot of
information and on-screen text and picture to help all students gain an understanding of
the oceans! Overall, I think this video is a great tool and it will really help to get the
information across to the students.

Continents and Oceans Song:

The Continents and Oceans song is a song that review the continents and oceans for the
students. Instead of just having a plain video I decided to include this song for student
who learn better using songs and other things like that. I know that some students like to
remember things using song, so this give them that opportunity. On this video there is an
option to used Closed Captioning, so this is good for student who are hard of hearing and
makes sure that they are getting the full effect as well. I think songs just help student
remember thing better so that is why I chose to use a song for a portion of the lesson.

Continents and Oceans Game:

The continents and map game are a free online game for the student to play. If the student
chooses to play the game, then they are getting to gain a better understanding of
alphanumeric maps. I choose this game because it is easy to work through and all
different types of learners should be able to play it. If they need assistance, I will be
willing to help them navigate through this game but for the most part it is straight forward
and easy to use. All they do in this game is click on the place that is being shown on the
screen. Therefore, it is helping them learn to label and click on specific places on the
map. I am giving the students a choice to play this game because some students do better
with online game, and some do better with paper and pencil that is why they have a
choice. Overall, I think this is a good learning game because it is easy to navigate through
and is cost efficient because it is free!

Kahoot:
I choose this piece of multimedia because it is a way to get all the students involved and
it is very useful when trying to review material. I have used Kahoot throughout my
school career and it really helped me to retain and understand information. By using it as
a teacher I get to make sure that all the question that I want to review on there are
because I get to make it myself. I think it will really be useful for the students to review
and retain information. I think because this game has different options to play as a team
or by yourself all learners are included and allows them to choose how they want to
participate. You can also play this game on any device so if someone has a specific
device, they need to use they can, that’s what I like about Kahoot. The questions are also
projected on the board so if a student has a learning disability or physical disability there
are multiple ways, I can use this game to meet their needs.
