TEST ADMINISTRATION ASSIGNMENT

I administered the Beery VMI to my godson Frankie Rose. He is five years and 3 months

old and he started kindergarten this September. He attended preschool for a few months in 2019

before the school told his mother he needed to be placed with the four-year-old class instead.

They told her he was too advanced and felt he needed to be moved up. Before he could begin,

the COVID shut down made it so he never attended pre-school for more than 3 months.

The test was administered in Frankie’s home that he shares with his mother and

grandmother on Sunday, 10/31/21. I set him up at his desk in the living room and made sure it

was quiet and there were minimal distractions. I sat in front of him on the floor and gave him a

number 2 pencil without an eraser and turned the test booklet to the correct page. I then showed

him where to begin and started the assessment process.

During the assessment, Frankie used his right hand in a dynamic tripod grasp when

drawing. He was attentive up until the third page vocalizing that the test was “so easy!” and

making little comments while he completed each task. For example, when he drew the triangle

and the square, he identified each object out loud before he drew it. After the third page he asked

me if he was done yet and if we could play a game together. That is where his attention began to

decrease. At task 18, Frankie attempted to draw the form but eventually told me he couldn’t do it

before turning the page on his own. After he completed tasks 19 through 21, I recognized that he

had failed those last three and the ceiling had been reached for this assessment. I promptly

stopped the test and Frankie put down his pencil and asked again to play his game. Throughout

most of the assessment Frankie sat with his feet on the floor and back straight, demonstrating

correct posture. He did lean forward once onto his left arm when attempting to draw task 18. I

believe he did this because he was concentrating on copying the form correctly. He was very

motivated to complete the assessment because I had promised I would play games with him once

it was completed. I think his excitement over this is what led to his decreased attention after the

third page.

Frankie received a raw score of 15 on the Beery VMI. His standard score was 104 and he

is in the 61st percentile of his age group. According to Table 1 in the Beery VMI 6th edition

manual, Frankie’s performance is in the average range. (Beery et al., 2010) I believe Frankie’s

scores may have been affected by his lack of Pre-school education. Despite this, his scores are

satisfactory for his age and I believe they can be improved. I recommend that his mother have

him practice tracing letters, numbers and shapes to improve his visual motor integration. He is

already working on this in kindergarten and the added practice would further improve his skills.

The Beery VMI is a relatively uncomplicated assessment. I did not run into any problems

when administering the test. I had a few difficulties when scoring the assessment but reading the

manual was helpful and informative and I was able to figure out the process. I did not

immediately understand the scores but once I looked over the manual again and viewed table 1, I

was able to better understand the results of the test. Overall, I think this assessment is easy to

administer and gives you excellent insight on a person’s ability to integrate their visual and

motor abilities.
