Dear Parents/Guardians, Students and Staff,

Re: Increased Absenteeism Rate at your child's School or Child Care Centre

Toronto Public Health (TPH) has been notified by your child’s school or child care that the
setting’s absenteeism rate is at least 30% higher than usual.

There are multiple layers of protection in place for both staff and children in school and child
care settings. Toronto Public Health continues to support schools and child care operators to
review public health measures that should be in place to help prevent COVID-19 spread and to
help keep schools and child care environments as safe as possible.

Here are some important COVID-19 reminders:

1. Daily screening

All children/students and staff must be screened daily for symptoms of COVID-19 before
attending school or child care facilities. The screening tool for children can be found here.
Remember – do not attend/send your child to school if there are any symptoms, even if they
are mild.

2. Self-isolation

If you, your child or another member of your household has tested positive on either a PCR
test or a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT), or are experiencing symptoms on COVID-19, everyone in
your household must stay home and self-isolate for 5 to 10 days depending on vaccination
status.

All household members must stay home and self-isolate for the same amount of time as the
positive case. This includes siblings. For more information about self-isolation, please review
page 2 of the screening tool for details on how long to stay home and self-isolate.

3. Notify close contacts if you or your child develop COVID-19 symptoms or test positive

Remember to notify all close contacts in the community with which you or your child had
contact in the last 48 hours before the positive test result or when symptoms began.. A close
contact in the community is anyone whom you/your child:
 Spent at least 15 minutes of time with outside the classroom or school or child care
AND
 Where the contact was within two meters for at least 15 minutes - or multiple shorter
lengths of time.

4. If you or your child are close contacts of someone with COVID-19 in the community

If you or your child was identified as a close contact of someone with COVID-19 in the
community (e.g. at an indoor gathering, playdate, indoor activity) take the following measures
based on provincial requirements:
 No need to self-isolate if you or your child are fully vaccinated, not
immunocompromised, AND are without COVID-19 symptoms.
 Self-isolate for 5 days from the last contact with the infected person if you or your
child are 11 years and younger AND are either partially vaccinated or unvaccinated.
 Self-isolate for 10 days from the last contact with the infected person if you or your
child are 12 years and older AND are either partially vaccinated, unvaccinated OR
are immunocompromised.

Based on provincial guidance, an individual sharing a classroom or child care cohort with an
infected individual is not considered a close contact. Continue to monitor your child for
symptoms. If your child has no symptoms, they may continue to attend school/child care.

5. COVID-19 testing

The province has made rapid antigen tests available at schools and child care centres to be
used at home when your child has symptoms.

6. Masking

Wearing a mask is an important public health measure to stop the spread of COVID-19. Please
make sure your child wears a high-quality, well-fitted mask when in school. Children should
wear a high-quality, well-fitted mask when in child care, if possible. Send an extra mask with
your child in a clean labelled bag.

7. COVID-19 vaccinations

Children can receive their first and second COVID-19 vaccine doses at one of the City-run
immunization clinics, pop-up immunization clinics, hospital clinics, local school-based clinics or
one of the more than 525 participating pharmacies.

Booster appointments are available for individuals who are eligible and over the age of 18.
Appointments can be booked by visiting the Ontario COVID-19 Vaccination Portal or by calling
the Provincial Vaccine Booking Line at 1-833-943-3900. Please see Toronto Public Health's
website for more information on how to get vaccinated.
