Guide Questions:

a. What do you observe in the radicands and indices of each item?

b. If they have the same radicand and indices, then how do we simplify
them?
c. What operations are involved in simplifying the same radicand and
indices?

Similar radicals or like radicals are radicals of the same order and
same radicand. These radicals can be combined into a single radical.
We can combine like radicals by adding or subtracting the
coefficients and annexing their common radical.

A. Dissimilar Radicals
3 3
1. 12 √6 + 3√3 - 5 √6

2. √𝑥 - 2√𝑥 + 3√𝑦

3. √32𝑎 + 7√12𝑎 +√98𝑎

4. 7√100𝑥 2 𝑦 - √144𝑥 2 𝑦 - 5√𝑥 2 𝑦

5. 5√2 + 3√32

Remember if the radical in radical expressions is not in simplest

form, you need to simplify it first before simplifying the expressions.
Only similar radicals can be added or subtracted.
Solutions:

Examples

Remember: To multiply radicals on the same order,
𝒏 𝒏 𝒏
Use the Product Property of Square Root √𝒂𝒃 = √𝒂 • √𝒃 then simplify by
removing the perfect nth powers from the radicand.

B. Multiplying Binomials Involving Radicals

Examples:
1. √𝑥 (5 − √𝑥 ) = (√𝑥 )(5) - (√𝑥)(√𝑥) Distributive property
=15√𝑥 - √𝑥 2 Product property of
square roots
= 15√𝑥 − 𝑥

2. (√𝑥 + 6√5)(√𝑥 − 6)

3. (2√2𝑝 − 3) = (2√2𝑝 − 3)(2√2𝑝 − 3)

= (2√2𝑝)(2√2𝑝) − (2√2𝑝)(3) − (3)(2√2𝑝) + (3)(3)

= 4√4𝑝2 - 6√2𝑝 - 6√2𝑝 + 9
= 4(2p) - 12√2𝑝 + 9
= 8p -12√2𝑝 + 9

4. (√𝑥 + √6)(√𝑥 − √6)

= (√𝑥)(√𝑥) − (√𝑥)(√6) + (√6)(√𝑥) − (√6)(√6)
= √𝑥 2 - √6𝑥 + √6𝑥 - √36
=𝑥−6

Remember:
To multiply binomials involving radicals,
Use the property for the product of two binomials.
(𝑎 ± 𝑏)(𝑐 ± 𝑑 ) = 𝑎𝑐 (𝑎𝑑 ± 𝑏𝑐 ) ± 𝑏𝑑 , then simplify by removing
