After going through this module, you are expected to perform the operations on
radical expressions:
a. Addition
b. Subtraction
c. Multiplication
d. Division
What I Know
What’s
In
Write YES if the expression is the correct simplified form of the
radicals. Otherwise NO if it is not.
What is
It
Addition and Subtraction of Radicals
Similar radicals or like radicals are radicals of the same order and
same radicand. These radicals can be combined into a single radical.
We can combine like radicals by adding or subtracting the
coefficients and annexing their common radical.
A. Dissimilar Radicals
3 3
1. 12 √6 + 3√3 - 5 √6
2. √𝑥 - 2√𝑥 + 3√𝑦
5. 5√2 + 3√32
Examples
3 3
1. 12 √6 + 3√3 - 5 √6
3 3
= 12 √6 - 5 √6 + 3√3 arrange similar term.
3
= 7 √6 + 3√3 combined similar radicals.
3
= 7 √6 + 3√3 only similar radicals can be
combined.
What’s More
Like Radicals – Radical expressions that have the same _______ and the
same _____________.
What I Can Do
BAKING CHALLENGE:
Within 20 minutes you can get the complete ingredients of banana cake, if
you will be able to add or subtract correctly the radical expressions.
Assessment
Choose the letter that corresponds to the correct answer.
A. 2√3 - 6 C. 15√12 − 9
B. 2√3 + 6 D. 15√12 + 9
1 1 1
5. The sum of 2 √36𝑥 - 4 √64𝑥 + 4 √144𝑥 is?
A. 4√𝑥 B. 3√𝑥 C. 2√𝑥 D.√𝑥
What’s
In
Simplify the following.
GIVEN FINAL ANSWER
1. 4√7 − 3√7 + √7
What is
It
A. Multiplying Radicals of the Same Order.
Example:
1. √6 • √12 = √(6)(12) Product property of square roots
= √72 Multiply the radicands
= √36 • 2 Factor the radicand to get the
greatest perfect square factor.
= 6√2
= 2𝑥𝑦√2𝑥𝑦
10
Examples:
1. √𝑥 (5 − √𝑥 ) = (√𝑥 )(5) - (√𝑥)(√𝑥) Distributive property
=15√𝑥 - √𝑥 2 Product property of
square roots
= 15√𝑥 − 𝑥
2. (√𝑥 + 6√5)(√𝑥 − 6)
= (√𝑥)(√𝑥) + (√𝑥)(−6) + (6√5)(√𝑥) - (6√𝑥)(6)
the product of two binomials /
= √𝑥 2 - 6√𝑥 + 6√5𝑥 - 36√𝑥 use FOIL method
simplify
= 𝑥 − 6√𝑥 + 6√5𝑥 − 36√𝑥
2
3. (2√2𝑝 − 3) = (2√2𝑝 − 3)(2√2𝑝 − 3)
Remember:
To multiply binomials involving radicals,
Use the property for the product of two binomials.
(𝑎 ± 𝑏)(𝑐 ± 𝑑 ) = 𝑎𝑐 (𝑎𝑑 ± 𝑏𝑐 ) ± 𝑏𝑑 , then simplify by removing
perfect nth power from the radicand or by combining similar radicals.
11
3. 4√9𝑥𝑦 2 • √3𝑥 4 𝑦
1 1
= (9𝑥𝑦 2 )4 • (3𝑥 4 𝑦)2 transform into fractional exponents
1 2
= (9𝑥𝑦 2 )4
• (3𝑥 𝑦) 4 4 change the fractional exponents into
similar fraction
= 4√9𝑥𝑦 2 • 4√(3𝑥 4 𝑦)2
Guide Questions:
1. How do we multiply the radicals:
a. with same index?
b. different indices?
c. different index and different radicals?
d. that are binomial in form?
2. What are your conclusions on multiplying radicals?
