NOTICE!
Use of an oil not listed here, contrary to our recommenda-
tions, automatically voids the warranty.
In the worst case, the use of oils not listed here may result in
irreparable damage and complete breakdown of the com-
pressor.
If you need help in selecting the correct oil, please contact
the Sauer-Service department.
Applicability The tables do not apply outside the temperature range +5 °C to +55 °C.
For the approved temperature range of +5 °C to +55 °C mineral oils from a
viscosity class complying with ISO VG 100 are recommended. As a min-
imum, the oils should meet the requirements of the VCL Group in compli-
ance with DIN 51506.
Switching between min- When switching from mineral oil to synthetic oil or vice versa, J.P. Sauer &
eral oil and synthetic oil Sohn Maschinenbau GmbH strongly recommends that any existing oil be
completely drained and a purging process be carried out three times using
the new oil type.
2 Mineral oils
Favourable properties n Due to their favourable properties, mineral oils are the preferred choice
for many applications:
n Mineral oils
– have sufficiently good lubricating properties.
– are available in all viscosity grades.
– can absorb humidity.
– are not aggressive to standard gaskets (NBR).
– are available worldwide and can be procured easily.
– are relatively inexpensive compared to special oils.
– are miscible with each another.
– can be disposed of more easily than synthetic oils.
Operating limits n The use of mineral oils is limited due to the certain properties:
n Mineral oils
– can only be used up to certain oil temperatures.
– experience a substantial change in their viscosity depending on tem-
perature.
– can only be used to a limited extent at high ambient temperatures.
Standard mineral oil For applications in the industrial sector Shell Corena S2 P 100 is the
standard mineral oil used in Sauer-Compressors.
Approved mineral oils The following mineral oils are approved by J.P. Sauer & Sohn Maschinenbau
GmbH for use in Sauer-Compressors:
Mineral oils for marine For marine applications, the following NATO-classified mineral oils can be
applications used with no restrictions:
Approved oils for 6000 For 6000 series Sauer-Compressors (e.g. WP6442)
series
Ä Chapter 7 „Oils for 6000 series“ on page 17.
3 Synthetic oils
Favourable properties n Synthetic oils are used in applications which require particular properties:
n Synthetic oils
– have good oxidation resistance.
– have a better viscosity-temperature behaviour.
– are suitable for low operating temperatures due to their better flow
properties.
– are suitable for high operating temperatures.
– have a longer service life due to slower ageing properties.
– are less prone to flammability.
Operating limits n The use of synthetic oils is limited by the following operating limits:
n Synthetic oils
– have excellent additive solubility.
– in some cases have hardly any corrosion protection properties.
– have limited compatibility with elastomers.
– are not always available.
– are more expensive to purchase than mineral oils.
– are not miscible with mineral oils.
– are only miscible with one another to a limited extent.
Approved synthetic oils The following synthetic oils are approved by J.P. Sauer & Sohn Maschi-
nenbau GmbH for use in Sauer-Compressors:
Synthetic oils for marine For marine applications, the following NATO-classified synthetic oils can be
applications used with no restrictions:
Approved oils for 6000 For 6000 series Sauer-Compressors (e.g. WP6442)
series
Ä Chapter 7 „Oils for 6000 series“ on page 17.
4 Preservation oils
Mobilarma 524 is the standard preservation oil used for Sauer-Compressors.
Alternatively, the following preservation oils are also recommended by J.P.
Sauer & Sohn Maschinenbau GmbH:
Synthetic oils for boos- Compressors that compress pre-compressed gases to a higher final pres-
ters sure are called boosters.
For boosters and special gas applications, J.P. Sauer & Sohn Maschinenbau
GmbH recommends exclusively oils complying with ISO VG 100.
The following oils are approved by J.P. Sauer & Sohn Maschinenbau GmbH:
J.P. Sauer & Sohn Maschinenbau GmbH recommends Mobil Rarus 829 as
the standard synthetic oil for boosters used for gas compression.
Alternative synthetic oils may only be used after special approval by J.P.
Sauer & Sohn Maschinenbau GmbH.
Special gas applications The only oil approved by J.P. Sauer & Sohn Maschinenbau GmbH for biome-
thane and natural gas applications with final pressures of over 200 bar is:
Air compression The following oils are approved by J.P. Sauer & Sohn Maschinenbau GmbH:
J.P. Sauer & Sohn Maschinenbau GmbH recommends Mobil Rarus 827 as
the standard synthetic oil for the 6000 series for air compression.
Alternative synthetic oils may only be used after special approval by J.P.
Sauer & Sohn Maschinenbau GmbH.
Gas compression and The following oils are approved by J.P. Sauer & Sohn Maschinenbau GmbH:
booster applications
J.P. Sauer & Sohn Maschinenbau GmbH recommends Mobil Rarus 829 as
the standard synthetic oil for the 6000 series for gas compression.
Alternative synthetic oils may only be used after special approval by J.P.
Sauer & Sohn Maschinenbau GmbH.
The only oil approved as the standard mineral oil for Sauer-Compressors
used for breathing air generation is Shell Corena S2 P 150.
Alternative mineral oils may only be used for breathing air generators after
special approval by J.P. Sauer & Sohn Maschinenbau GmbH.
The only oil approved as the standard synthetic oil for Sauer-Compressors
used for breathing air generation is LM 750.
Alternative synthetic oils may only be used for breathing air generators after
special approval by J.P. Sauer & Sohn Maschinenbau GmbH.
To avoid health risks, the oils approved for breathing air gen-
erators should only be used with adequate filtration.
