Question 1 [ Crit B : Inquiring and Designing ]

Light provides energy for the synthesis of glucose from carbon dioxide and water during
photosynthesis. An experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of light intensity on the
rate of photosynthesis of a water plant. The diagram below shows the apparatus used.

a. Suggest how you ensure that the plant had a good supply of carbon dioxide.

1m

b. State the name of gas given off by the plant.

1m

c. Describe how could you test for this gas.

1m

d. Suggest and explain how could you prevent the heat from the lamp affecting the experiment.

Question 2 [ Crit B : Inquiring and Designing ]

Using this apparatus set up, design and investigation to investigate the effect of increasing light
intensity on the rate of photosynthesis?

a. State the independent variable.

b. State the dependent variable.

c. Describe how could you measure the dependent variable.

d. Suggest and justify 2 control variables for the investigation.

Question 3 [ Crit C : Processing and Evaluating ]

Plant materials is used to produce ethanol, which can be used as biofuel. The main sources of
plant materials used around the world today are wheat, corn, soybeans and sugarcanes. These
food sources are used because they have high sugar content, and they ferment easily. Some
students investigated if other food waste could be fermented to produce biofuel.

The food waste they choose to study was sugarcanes and pineapples. The results from their
investigation are shown in the table below.

Mass of ethanol produced each day from 10g of food waste / mg

Day 1 Day 3 Day 5 Day 7 Day 9 Day 11

Sugarcanes 2.7 4.6 3.5 3.2 2.4 2.1

Pineapple 2.4 5.6 9.1 3.5 1.4 1.4

a. For each of the food waste, identify the day which the total mass of ethanol was produced.

Sugarcanes 1m Pineapple 1m

b. Plot the data for sugarcane and pineapple waste on the graph. You should also add a title

to the graph and label the axes.

Question 3 [ Crit C : Processing and Evaluating ]

Through an earlier investigation it was that amount of carbohydrates (including sugars)

per 100 g of sugarcane and pineapple waste is 24g and 13g, respectively.
6m

The students predicted the :

During fermentation, a food source containing more carbohydrates will produce more ethanol
than a food source that contains less carbohydrates.

f. Suggest reasons why the prediction is not supported by the results. 2m
