INTRODUCTION
For this project, determination of Safe Bearing Capacity of strata was required to be done
with the help of Plate Load Test for design of foundation system. M/S MEHROTRA
BUILDCON PVT. LTD. who are the construction contractor of the project, have awarded the
work conducting plate load test at stratum at foundation level to M/s Bajrang Testing
Laboratory Pvt. Ltd ,
36 Charbagh Colony , Goverdhan Road Mathura
Plate load test at location, i.e. at site was done after digging a pit.

PROCEDURE
1. A pit was dug at the site of plate load test by earth mover. The ground was prepared
by levelling the surface and placing a thin layer of sand.
2. Loading was done by loaded poklene of 20 to 22 Ton load available at the site.
3. Position the test plate was centrally at the base of the pit. Ensured that the ground
surface below the test plate was perfectly horizontal and level so that no stress
concentration takes place below the plate during loading. For slightly uneven
surface, a thin layer of sand was spread underneath the test plate.
4. Hydraulic jack over the test plate was positioned so that when hydraulic pressure is
built up the jack pushes against the loaded vehicle. Loading column between the test
plate and the jack were placed to ensure the jack reach the loaded vehicle’s loading
plate whenever required.
5. Two dial gauges were placed diagonally to record its settlement of the plate. The dial
gauges were supported carefully over a stable base which does not settle with the
plate. This was achieved by placing two cross beams at ground level over which the
dial gauges are supported with the help of magnetic bases. The settlement of the
plate was transmitted to the dial gauges through dial gauge stands.
6. The dial gauges were positioned such that the plunger of the dial gauges were at its
beginning of rebound (i.e. the plunger is initially pushed up) so that it will get
released as the plate settles and the reading changes and the difference in reading
provided the settlement of the plate.

7. The load was applied on the plate by pumping the hydraulic pressure into the jack.
The upward movement of the plunger of the jack tries to push the loaded platform.
Since the pressure built up in the jack (say 0.5 T) was much less than the load over
the loaded vehicle, the pressure in the jack will push the test plate down by taking
the loaded platform as rigid support. Due to the expansion the weaker support
(ground) yields.
8. A seating load of 70g/cm2was applied which is released before the actual loading is
started.
9. Initial readings (0.00 readings) of the dial gauges were noted down.
10.The load was applied through the hydraulic jack in convenient increments. The load
increments were one fifth of the estimated ultimate bearing capacity and 0.5Ton in
this case. The applied load was read from the load gauge fitted to the hydraulic
pump.
11.Settlement of the plate was to be observed from the dial gauge readings. Settlement
should be observed for each increment of load after an interval of 1, 2.25, 4, 6.25, 9,
16 and 25 minutes or until the rate of settlement becomes to the nearest 0.02 mm
per hour. Readings were recorded in the tabular form in observation sheet.
12.After completing the recording of settlement readings under a load, the next load
increment is applied and the dial gauges readings were noted under the new load.
13.The loading increments and the recording of the settlements under each load are
continued until the maximum load is reached. The maximum load that is to be
applied corresponds to 2.0 times the design load, 1.5 times the estimated ultimate
load or to 3 times the proposed allowable (safe) bearing pressure.

CALCULATIONS:
The safe bearing capacity is obtained by dividing the ultimate bearing capacity by a
factor of safety varying from 2 to 3 and here used was 2.5. The value of safe bearing
capacity thus arrived at, is considered to be based on criterion of shear failure. Safe
bearing capacity (SBC) based on permissible settlement. As indicated earlier the
settlement of footing is also related to the SBC of the soil.
The value of ultimate bearing capacity and hence the SBC in this case, can be
obtained from the load settlement curves by reading the value of load intensity
corresponding to the desired settlement of test plate. When there is not a clear
indication about yield point, a log-log plot of load vs settlement is drawn. The value
of permissible settlement (Sf) for different types of footings (isolated or raft) for
different types structures are specified in the IS code. The corresponding settlement
of test plate (Sp) can be calculated from the following formula,
Where
B= width of footing in m.
Bp =width of test plate in m.
Sp= settlement of test plate in m.
Sf = settlement of footing in m.

CALCULATIONS :
From the log-log graph of Load Vs Settlement, it can be seen that there is a clear yield point at an
applied load of 2.2 Ton.
Hence Calculation has been done for the load of 2.2 ton, for ultimate bearing capacity of soil as
per IS:1888.

Qnf = Ultimate Bearing Capacity
