ABSTRACT
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (SBA), one of the flagship programme’s of
the government has heralded a change in the sphere of sanitation
program in the country. Though India has made strides in improving
sanitations standards, the dismal sanitation statistics for both rural and
urban areas still leave much to be desired. With sanitations a key
priority, SBA was introduced by restructuring the erstwhile Nirmal
Bharat Abhiyan (NBA) for raising the standards in sanitation. Since its
launch on 2nd October2014, the country has seen an unprecedented
scaling up of sanitation related activities. States are competing with each
other to fulfill goals and targets by 2019 which is the target date to
achieve an open-defecation free country. According to the Ministry of
Drinking Water and Sanitation (MDWS), sanitation coverage has gone
up from 42 percent in October 2014 to 60 percent in 2017. As per
MWDS, three states – Kerala, Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim – 85
districts across the country and 1,52,535 villages have already been
declared open defecation free (ODF). These achievements have clearly
contributed to making sanitation a political priority. The Ministry has
also come up with ODF Sustainability Guidelines with a view to address
sustainability.

Hygiene refers to practices associated with ensuring good health and

cleanliness and it is a science that deals with the promotion and
preservation of health. The research will estimate the knowledge of
children and their attitude and actual practice towards personal hygiene.

INTRODUCTION
 Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a Clean India drive and Mission launched as a national
campaign by the Indian Government aimed at maintaining cleanliness of streets,
roads and infrastructure of the country.
 Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has officially launched this mission on

New Delhi.

activities.
 On the day of launch of the event PM himself has nominated the name of nine
people to participate in the cleanliness drive in their own areas.
 Schools and colleges have participated in the event by organizing many cleanliness
activities according to their own themes. Students of India participated in this event.
 PM had also requested to all those nine nominees to call another nine people

HEALTH AND HYGIENE

 Health and Hygiene Essay: Health and Hygiene are two essential concepts when it
comes to the human body. Health refers to the state of physically as well a mental
wellbeing. Health also encompasses the social wellbeing of an individual. Health is
not just about being fit but also having the appropriate resources to live. Having a
sound body and mind is an indication of good health.

 Health refers to a person’s overall well-being and focuses not just on one’s physical
state but the mental and social state as well. Physical fitness refers to the bodily
conditions and state of health with the absence of diseases. Mental health is the well-
being of a person’s psychological state, which is free from mental illness and having
good cognitive health. Social wellbeing is a person’s capability to form and maintain
relationships in their lives. The World Health Organization adds to this definition by
stating that health does not just refer to the objective of living but also resources for
everyday life. Having a sound body and mind constitutes good health.

 Hygiene refers to maintaining good health through practices that focus on cleanliness.
Good Hygiene helps to prevent the spread of diseases and illnesses. Hygiene and
health go hand in hand. In today’s world, where pollution levels are rising and
numerous diseases emerging, good health and Hygiene are a necessity.

Steps in maintaining Hygiene:

 CLEAN TOILETS: Ensure the cleanliness and availability of water in the

toilets on a daily basis. Provide facilities for students and staff to wash hands
after using toilets.

 APPOINT SUPERVISORS: Appoint staff to take care of hygiene issues in

school. The staff should ensure that the school surroundings are kept clean and the
water and food provided to students are safe.

 INTRODUCE GARBAGE PITS: Create a garbage pit in school

where all the waste from class rooms and the school premises
can be disposed and burnt once in a week.

 INVOLVEMENT OF PARENTS: Mostly in rural areas personal hygiene is

not given much importance. Therefore, it is important for the school authorities
to involve parents while conducting talks on hygiene.
