Lesson 1 – Finding the Elapsed Time

Let Us Learn
Hello dear learner! In your previous module, you learned
about finding the missing number in an equation. This time,
you will be able to:
Ø Find the elapsed time in minutes and in seconds.
(M4GE-IIIf-11)
In this lesson, you will be also learning the different ways on
how you can solve elapsed time. Fun and exciting activities are
prepared specially for you. So, get ready and be involved.

Let Us Try
Express the time using a.m. and p.m. and write your
answer in your answer sheet.
1) 20 minutes before 5 in the afternoon
2) 10 minutes past 7 in the morning
3) 20 minutes before 12 midnight
4) 30 minutes past 12 noon
5) 15 minutes past 3 in the afternoon.

Let Us Study
Read and study the problem below.
Problem 1
Maria ate her breakfast at 7:00 a.m. She finished at 7:25
a.m. How long did Maria eat her breakfast?

3
Answer the following question:
1. Who ate her breakfast?
2. What time did she start eating her breakfast?
3. What time did she finish eating?
4. What does the problem ask you to find out?

The problem asks you to find out the elapsed time.

Elapsed Time- is the amount of time that passes from the

beginning of an event to its end.
To solve the problem, you can do the following:
• Using the number line

7:00 a.m.- started eating 7:25 a.m.- finished eating

Maria ate her breakfast in 25 minutes.

• Counting Method
Count the number of minutes from the time the event
started to the time the event ended.

7:00 a.m. - start time ( skip counting by 5)

7:05 a.m.
7:10 a.m.
7:15 a.m.
7:20 a.m.
7:25 a.m. – end time

4
Therefore, 25 minutes is the length of time Maria ate her
breakfast.
Let’s have another example.

Jose is doing his homework in Math. He started at 6:30:25

p.m. and finished at 7:10:45 p.m. How long did Jose do his
homework?

You can solve this problem using subtraction method.

Subtract the time when the event started from the time the
event ended.
End Time (E T) - Start Time (S T)

E T: 7:10:45 6:60+10:45= rename 1 hour as 60 minutes

7:10:45 6:70:45 = add the 60 and 10 minutes then
subtract
End Time: 6:70:45
Start Time: - 6:30:25
0:40:20 – elapsed time
Jose answered his homework for 40 minutes and 20 seconds.

Let Us Practice
Use number line or subtraction method to answer the
problem below.
1. The flag raining ceremony will start at 6:30 a.m. and it will
end at 7:00 a.m. How long is the flag raising ceremony?

2. Mary and her mother arrived at the bus station at 7:25 p.m.
the bus left at 8:20 p.m. How long did they wait?

5
Let Us Practice More
Find the elapsed time.

1. Time started - 0:07:15

Time ended – 0:07:56
Elapsed time - ___________
2. Time started – 0:05:16
Time ended – 0:05:52
Elapsed time ____________

3. The children start cleaning the room at 11:05 a.m. and finished
at 11:45 a.m. How long did they clean?

4. Christy left the house at 1:35 p.m. and came back at 2:30 p.m.
How long she was not in the house?

5. Peter started answering his assignment in Math at 6:35p.m. and

finished at 7:15 p.m. How long did he answer his assignment?

Let Us Remember

Lesson 2 – Estimating the Duration of Time
Let Us Learn

Hello there! Did you have fun answering your previous

module on finding the elapsed time?

Here is another module specially made for you to provide an

easier way to solve mathematical problems. All you must do is to
read properly and analyze the words that will lead you to become
more confident. You are about to learn on how to estimate the
duration of time in minutes (M4ME-IIIf-12).

An engaging task will be given for you to enjoy learning.

Let Us Try
Before you start the new lesson, try to answer the given
activity below, for you to know your ability and how interesting this
new skill that you are about to learn.

Complete the table by filling in the actual and estimated

elapsed time in your answer sheet.
Actual Estimated
Time started Time ended
elapsed time elapsed time
7:05 a.m. 7:28 a.m.
6:15 p.m. 6:37 p.m.
3:18 p.m. 3:42 p.m.
9:15 a.m. 9:47 a.m.
1:21 p.m. 2:13 p.m.

10
Let Us Study
To do your task, be reminded of your past learning in finding
the elapsed time. Let us get started.

Read the problem.

Aliyah woke up early in the morning. To be prepared with her

listed activities on that day, she started taking a bath at 5:17a.m.
and finished at 5:38 a.m. About how many minutes she spent in
taking a bath?

1. What was the first thing Aliyah did early in the morning?
2. At what time did she start and finish taking a bath?
3. What is asked in the problem?
4. Will you compute for the exact time that Aliyah spent in
taking a bath?
5. How are you going to solve the problem?

Let us find the solution to the problem using the steps below.
Understand
• What is asked? The estimated length of time she spent in
taking a bath.
• What are the given facts? 5:17 a.m. and 5:38 a.m.
• What is the word clue that tells you to do estimating?
“about”
Plan
• What is the operation to be used? Subtraction
• Write the number sentence. 5:38 – 5:15 = N

11
Solve
• Show your solution
To estimate the amount of time spent by Aliyah in taking a
bath, you must round first the times in minutes before
subtracting.

5:38 → 5:40 (End Time) 5:38

- 5:17 → - 5:20 (Start Time) - 5:17
0:20 minutes 0:21 minutes

Estimated elapsed time Actual elapsed time

Check and look Back
• Review your answer. Check if your answer is reasonable, then
write the correct answer.

Therefore, Aliyah took a bath for about 20 minutes.

Sometimes, you will need to borrow from the hour time,

which is if the minutes from the time ended is lesser than the
minutes in the time started.
Here is another example.
Pedro loves to read magical stories. He begins reading at 8:48
a.m. and stops to take some break at 9:13 a.m. About how long
did he read?

Let us solve the problem.

Understand
• What is asked? The estimated length of time Pedro spent in
in reading
• What are the given facts? 8:48a.m. and 9:13 a.m.
Plan
• What is the operation to be used? Subtraction
• Write the number sentence. 9:13 – 8:48 = N

12
Solve
• Show your solution
Remember to find the estimated time, you must round the times
in minutes. Then subtract the rounded times.
9: 13 9:10
- 8: 48 - 8:50

But, 10 is lesser than 50. You will need to borrow 1 hour from
9. One hour is equivalent to 60 minutes. Therefore, 60 will be
added to 10. And the 9 will become 8.
9: 10 rename 1 hour as 60 minutes 8:60 + 10
8:70 8:70
- 8:50
0:20 Estimated time
Check and look Back
• Review your answer. Check if your answer is reasonable,
then write the correct answer.

Therefore, Pedro reads for about 20 minutes.
