BUILDING VOCABULARY

The term “vocabulary” refers to the stock of words used by a group of people or by a
particular person. It also refers to the entire accumulation of words in a language

You cannot build a vocabulary if you do not meet new words. One of best ways to meet new
words is to read and read and read. The more you read the more opportunity you have to meet
unfamiliar words and get acquainted with them.
v

A second step involves getting acquainted with the dictionary. Anyone interested in building
a supply of useful words looks in the dictionary to find out how a word is pronounced, where it
comes from, what it means, and what other words re connected with it .

Expanding your vocabulary

Before engaging yourself in a more serious reading, study how words are defined
and expanded. Then define the words which will assigned to you by your teacher. Be
guided by the following format: vi

THE WORLD OF WORD’S EXPANSION

Study the rules in expanding a definition of words, and then do the tasks that
follow:
Expanding a Word into a Sentence
Word/s + class + characteristics (differentiates)
Example: Sense of humor is the ability to laugh and make others laugh.
term class distinguishing characteristics

Giving an expanded definition is distinguishing the characteristics of a certain

word, providing extra facts/information about it, giving examples and/or saying what
cannot be included to describe it. Study the example below:

Mother Nature (sometimes known as Mother Earth or the Earth-

Mother) is a common personification of nature that focuses on the life-
giving and nurturing aspects of nature by embodying it in the form of
the mother. Images of women representing Mother Earth, and Mother
Nature, are timeless. In prehistoric times, goddesses were worshipped
for their association with fertility, fecundity, and agricultural bounty.
Priestesses held dominion over aspects of Incan, Algonquian,
Assyrian, Babylonian, Slavonic, Germanic, Roman, Greek, Indian, and
Iroquoian religions in the millennia prior to the inception of patriarchal
religions.

Enhanced Greenhouse Effect

What is greenhouse effect? Is greenhouse effect important or

disadvantageous to life on Earth? What is enhanced greenhouse effect?

The portion of sunlight that reaches Earth’s surface is absorbed and

converted into energy of longer wavelength (that is, infrared, or heat). This is
reradiated by the ground back to the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases present in the
troposphere do not absorb sunlight but absorb infrared radiation. Thereby preventing
energy from escaping to out space. This phenomenon is called the greenhouse effect.

The greenhouse effect is important to life on Earth, since it maintains the

temperature needed to support life. Having the right amount of greenhouse gases is
what gives Earth the right temperature for people to live.

Due to the increasing use of fossil fuels, burning of forestlands to increase

agricultural production, decaying of agricultural products, and other human
activities, the concentration of gases in the atmosphere has been increasing,
resulting in an “enhanced greenhouse effect” which is often referred to as global
warming.

Scientists sat that a hotter world will make “extreme weather” --- referring t
heat waves droughts, and floods that may cause death to humans. Increased
temperature also affects other living things. Some aquatic species have moved their
ranges towards colder regions. Migratory patters of animal are disrupted. Higher
temperatures are conducive to the spread of disease organisms, or pathogens, that
affect plants, animals, and humans.
