8. Follow the schedule of the activities,

9. Find time to relax and take a break.
10. Have fun learning.

To keep us all healthy and always ready to learn, here are some of the “home
mode reminders”, we can practice.

Have you experienced an extreme typhoon, wherein it causes a severe flooding and
affects a large number of people in your barangay or have you ever been hit by a strong
earthquake that led to the collapse of houses and burying household members? How
did you cope up with these kinds of events?

Let us start the weekly module by gathering your ideas about disasters. As we go
through this weekly module, keep on thinking about these questions: What are
disasters? Why is it important to know the risk of disasters?

Before we begin to the discussion about disasters, let us have an activity. Ask your
parents, guardian or any members of the family if they experienced any kind of disastrous
events in the Philippines like the typhoon Yolanda and the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo. How
did they adapt to the impact and damages brought by these disasters?

Write their response in the box below. You can also write down your reactions to
their experiences.

Express your thoughts

When we hear the word “disaster”, several extreme events come into mind,
depending on our geographical location, knowledge, and own experiences.
The question is, how and when an event becomes a disaster? Do we
consider all earthquakes, typhoons or even volcanic eruption a disaster?

Let us take a look at these 2 pictures below. Do you consider these situations
as a disaster?

Is this a disaster? Why?

Pre-activity:

1. Prepare the materials needed.

- Big container - Mud and rocks - Water
- Newspaper - Toy house/ cardboard houses
- Bottle with holes - Branch of a tree

During activity.

1. In a container, build a pile of newspaper

and cover it with mud sloping down to its
base. Leave a space at the bottom to pour
in water.
2. Place a mixture of houses, using the toy
house or cardboard houses on high and
low levels.
3. Pour water into the reserved space. This
represents a river.
4. Using the bottle with holes shake water
over the river.
5. Observe what happens as the water level
rises.

Post Activity.

In your experiment, you have seen the possible effect of a certain disaster in

You have learned from lesson 1 that disaster is a serious disruption in the
functioning of the community or a society causing wide spread material,
economic, social, or environmental losses which exceed the ability of the affected
society to cope using its own resources. Have you heard the word hazard? What
does it mean? What is the difference between hazard and disaster?

To start our weekly module, I want you to list the important key concept
related to Hazards using the bubble map below.

From the previous topic, you have learned that hazards are phenomena that
may cause severe death toll, damages to property, environment, and socio-
economic condition of communities. On the other hand, vulnerability explains
how people and the differences among them contribute to the situation or context
wherein they operate. In this topic we will discuss about earthquake. Have you ever
experienced an earthquake before? What are the hazards that an earthquake can
cause? Is it the cause of tsunami?

We all know that earthquake occurs because of the pressure released due to
the movement of Earth’s plates because of that earthquake can cause many
hazards. In this activity you will understand what are the potential earthquake
hazards that may occur in your community. Let us start the activity by defining each
potential hazards of earthquake, the pictures may help you define the differences of

verse is also provided below to help and guide you more on the prayer you will
formulate. Together, let us do things toward His Holiness because we are precious in
His eyes.
“God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we
will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea”
Psalm 46:1-2

We would like to hear from you and your parent/guardian comments and
observations of this lesson’s module. If you have suggestions, please feel free to write
it o the box provided. Remember, we are partners in this learning. Your feedbacks will
be highly apreciated.

In this unit, the standards are:

The learners demonstrate an understanding of:

Signs of Volcanic Eruptions potential volcano-related hazards:
1. Lahar
2. Ash Fall
3. Pyroclastic Flow
4. Ballistic Projectile
5. Volcanic Glasses
6. Lava Flow

The learners develop a family emergency preparedness plan to

guide them on what to do before, during, and after a volcanic eruption.

For Lesson 4, we will have the following learning targets. At the end of the lesson,
check the column that best describes your assessment of your own learning relative to
the given learning targets.

I can explain various

volcano-related hazards
I can recognize signs of
an impending volcanic
eruption
I can interpret different
volcano hazard maps

In the previous module, we identified and analyze various potential earthquake

hazards. Now, let us also try to understand the different volcano-related hazards. Have
you ever wondered what the signs of impending volcanic eruption are? How do
volcanoes erupt?

To start our weekly module, let us try to discover how volcanoes erupt. I want you
to ask your parents, guardian or any members of the family if they experienced an
eruption of a volcano like of Mt. Pinatubo. Ask them whether they see some signs
that the volcano is going to erupt. What do they think is the reason why the volcano
erupted?

Write their response in the box below. You can also write down your reactions to
their experiences.

Express your thoughts

For further understanding, let us watch a video on how volcanoes erupt. Use the link
provided below. After watching write a summary on how volcanic eruption occurs
MY SUMMARY

Now that you know how volcanoes erupt, let us learn the signs of impending volcanic
eruptions. I want you to read the article on the given link below.

What are the signs of impending volcanic eruption mentioned in the article? Write
your answers on the graphic organizer below

know some names of volcanoes present in the Philippines? What do you know
about major volcanic eruptions in our country?

In order to know more about the volcanoes in our Country, you will watch
the video on the link below. After watching the video, fill in the table for
