1. A random copolymer consists of the following two repeat units in 6:4 ratio respectively (on
wt% basis):

Consider a mixture prepared by mixing two samples (weighing 200 g and 300 g respectively)
of this copolymer having molar masses 10,000 g/mol and 20,000 g/mol respectively. Calculate
the number average molar mass, weight average molar mass, the polydispersity index and the
number average degree of polymerization of the mixture (neglecting end-groups). You may

Determine the intrinsic viscosities, [ɳ] of these samples. The intrinsic viscosities of the other
three polystyrene samples were evaluated under the same conditions and are given in the

3. Polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate) samples of narrow molar mass distribution were
analysed under identical conditions using a high-performance gel permeation chromatography
system. The elution time for one of the poly(methyl methacrylate) samples was found to be the
same as that for the polystyrene sample of molar mass 97000g mol-1. Evaluate the molar mass
of this poly(methyl methacrylate) sample given that for the solvent and temperature used the
