Parts of the respiratory system

 Mouth:  Where the  body takes in oxygen  and releases carbon  dioxide.

Trachea:  Tube that  carries the air (oxygen  and carbon dioxide) to
and from the lungs.
 Bronchial tubes:   smaller tubes that carry  the air in and out of the
lungs.  These tubes  branch off to each lung.
 Diaphragm:  a strand of  muscle tissue that  controls the breathing  for the body.
    Lungs:  soft  tissue organs  where the  oxygen, carbon  dioxide gas  exchange takes
place.   Alveoli:  tiny air  sac in the lungs  where the  oxygen/carbon  dioxide gas
exchange takes  place.
 Pleura:  The lining on the  outside of the lung.   It helps to protect the  lung.
Capillaries:  tiny  blood vessels where  gas exchange  happens
 Lung Nasopharynx:(nasal part of the  pharynx) is the  uppermost part of  the pharynx.
 Pharynx: the part of the  neck and throat situated  immediately behind the
mouth  and nasal cavity
 Larynx: voice  box

Students are required to make a drawing of the diagram below

Question
1. What is respiration ?
respiration -the process in which energy is released from food either in the presence or
absence of oxygen., , Cellular respiration anaerobic and aerobic respiration
2. What are the types of respiration?
Respiration is the process of gas exchange between the air and an organism's cells.
Three types of respiration include internal, external, and cellular respiration.
 External respiration is the breathing process. It involves inhalation and exhalation
of gases.
 Internal respiration involves gas exchange between the blood and body cells.
 Cellular respiration involves the conversion of food to energy. Aerobic respiration
is a cellular respiration that requires oxygen while anaerobic respiration does not.

3. What is the mitochondrion and its importance in respiration?

mitochondria are required for aerobic respiration. It is described as a powerhouse of
the cell :supply the cells with chemical energy in the form of ATP . The mitochondria
is essential for cellular respiration .
4. Explains the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide across the alveoli . See page 3
They will be required to research answers to these questions using the available
resources .
Assignment
students are expected to be to go create groups of at least five persons to create a model
of the respiratory system as shown in the picture below . required to do a presentation
on how it works and create a song poem or Jingle about breathing in the respiratory
system
Gas exchange
