Financial Statement Analysis Quiz
DIRECTIONS
A. PREFACE
To make more efficient, engaging, and fruitful the Financial Statement Analysis Classes (sessions
from 11 to 15 of the syllabus) we have decided to arrange the way through which the last session
of these five will be given and assessed, in a way that we think will surely have advantages for
you on both: knowledge and grade. Moreover, you can get points also watching a video, as
explained below.
First of all, the “FSA Quiz” is described along the following lines.
B. GENERAL INFO
a) All students enrolled in the class can participate to the FSA Quiz (second year, third year…)
b) The session in which the FSA Quiz will take place is n° 15 of your classes lectures timetable.
It is not possible to make the FSA quiz in advance or prior the class scheduled.
c) It is not possible to attend the FSA Quiz in a class different from the one you are assigned to.
d) The Quiz will consist of four different sets of questions, each given via Blackboard on a step-
by-step basis (see below for more details). Questions are the same for everyone during the quiz.
e) It is possible to attend the class in-distance (live Collaborate session) and answer questions
in-distance.
f) During the lecture, either if you are attending in class or remotely, working in group is
appreciated and advisable. A maximum number of five students working together will be
permitted. Though, interaction is allowed between groups (hence if you would like to work in
six, get divided in two groups of three that can interact during the session). We want to stimulate
teamwork, but keep in mind that we are in a single Velodromo classroom and too noise may
be really confusing.
g) Groups are to be formed on your own, at your own discretion (i.e. it’s not the professor
choosing). Groups are not to be communicated in any manner (i.e. you don’t need to inform the
instructor in class on the names of the people participating to your group). The only task of the
instructor is to check that, ultimately, too many people don’t work together, because the
rationale of the FSA Quiz is to have at the same time work in team, but also a consistent
engagement at an individual level.
h) VERY IMPORTANT: notwithstanding the fact that students can work in groups, answers
to the FSA Quiz Questions must be given in Blackboard INDIVIDUALLY during the
session. Remember to bring your laptop/tablet to provide the answers.
i) A total of 1.8 points1 will be awarded via a number of closed-ended questions given during
the session, each question worth 0.1 or 0.2 points. Each question is autonomous, so there is
not a minimum threshold to “pass” and get points (i.e. you can score also 0.10 out of 1.80).
j) In addition to the FSA Quiz session described above, for fifteen days, starting from early
April and after a dedicated announcement, a video will be made available on Blackboard
(“Peviani case”): watching the whole video and answering to VERY SIMPLE questions
related to the video wil give you the opportunity to get extra 0.2 points. These very simple

points.
questions are given to be sure that you watch the video and don’t play it in background doing
other stuffs in the meantime. The questions are given during, or at the end, of the video (this
is something that still needs to be defined on the backend side but you will clearly see them).
k) These (up to) two points (1.8 + 0.2) will generate a benefit for you students, as follows. If, in
one (or more) exam sessions, the grades will be curved upwards, the FSA quiz points will
be used to curve grades. Any point exceeding the curving provided for that exam session
will be lost. Any point below the curving provided for that exam will not be assigned. If
an exam is not curved, no FSA Quiz points will be assigned.
Example 1. Mark scores 1.70 /2.00 FSA Quiz Points. Mark sits for the exam in May 2022 and
passes with 25.6745 / 31.00. The professor applies a total maximum + 1 curving. As Mark
scored 1.70 in the FSA Quiz, Mark benefits of the + 1 point given for the curving and his final
grade is 26.6745 which is then rounded to 27. The exceeding 0.70 scored in the FSA Quiz by
Mark and unused for the curving goes lost.
Example 2. Pamela scores 0.60 /2.00 FSA Quiz Points. Pamela sits for the exam in June 2022
and passes with 25.6745 / 31.00. The professor applies a total maximum + 2 curving.
Nevertheless, as Pamela scored only 0.60 in the FSA Quiz, Pamela benefits only of a + 0.60
curving, so her final grade is 26.2745 which is then rounded to 26.
l) Obviously, being a curving, points cannot be refused after the exam, if the same exam is
curved (see Q&A page 11 Syllabus).
m) the “FSA Quiz Curving Points” will be valid (i.e. they may be used in case of curving) in the
following exam sessions: 26/05/2022; 15/06/2022; 25/08/2022; January/February 2023
(exact date not available yet, usually a day between Jan 25 and Feb 6).
n) In any possible scenario (absence, failure, withdraw) occurring in one exam session, the “FSA
Quiz Curving Points” are still valid (i.e. they will be used in case of curving) in the
subsequent sessions.
C. THE PROJECT
BEFORE CLASSES
Study the slides on Financial Statement Analysis and attend the classes where the first two cases
are discussed (although no points are awarded, sessions 13 and 14 can be a good training).
DURING CLASS
Each class will be asked to perform a financial statement analysis of a different company.
The company will NOT be announced in advance, but instead only during the session.
The FSA Quiz session will be divided as follows:
Sector of activity of the company
Analysis of the company’s financial statement
Ratio analysis of the company
Comparison with a competitor
Instructors will briefly introduce each step, pointing out actions required, time available and
other useful tips; each quiz will be then released, one at a time; and after each quiz, a short
debriefing and explanation will be provided.
The total points for the FSA Quiz Session in class is 1.8 points, which will be allocated by the
professor on a class-by-class basis between the four items mentioned above.
AFTER CLASSES
Watch the video on the Peviani case, which will be available for 15 days and duly announced.
After finishing the whole video and answering correctly the simple questions given, you will be
awarded 0.2 points.
After all the above, a questionnaire will be spreaded, due to the fact that this is a very-first-time
experiment, and we would like to receive your opinion on it (both Peviani and in-class case). A
consistent (at least 50% of the students participating to the quiz), honest and polite feedback
is expected. (so please don’t be shy to express your negative opinion, just please, as usual, be
polite and give suggestions to improve this new assessment method).
GOOD LUCK!
Xiaoxi, Lynn, Roberto and Luca

This means that, for example, no claims can be submitted in June, stating that in the FSA Quiz Session held in March,
question 16 answer was “true” but “Dear Professor, I reviewed the F/S of the Company and actually it could also be
false” so you claim you deserve a 0.10 additional curving point.
