GETTING STARTED
Lets set up PRO-53 as quickly as possible, then go through a quick introduction that shows how to start making music with PRO-53. For more detailed information and examples, please refer to the manual. For simplicity, the screen shots refer to the Windows version of PRO-53, but are similar on Macintosh systems. Note that this quickstart covers how to use PRO-53 in standalone mode; the manual tells us how to use Pro-53 as a plug-in. Caution for PC users: A generic driver like ASIO DirectX or ASIO Multimedia will not give as good a response as the specified driver for your card. If available, choose the driver name that includes the model number or manufacturer of your soundcard or audio interface.

Routing Settings

Computer Setup
After installing PRO-53, double-click on the PRO-53 icon in the Application folder (Mac OS X) or click on the corresponding Start menu entry (Windows XP). When first launching the application you are presented with a dialog box that contains your Audio and MIDI settings explained below. In the future, you will need to check the Audio and MIDI settings every time you install a new soundcard or MIDI device. You can access these settings from the File menu in the PRO53 window. Should you experience the problem of no audio output or MIDI input, these settings are a good place to start troubleshooting.

If your soundcard has multiple output capabilities, here is where you configure those. If multiple routing capabilities do not apply to your soundcard, you can skip this one. Most standard soundcards have just one stereo out. PRO-53 will use that, provided the soundcard was set up correctly (see above).

Soundcard Settings

MIDI Settings

1. First choose your interface type. ASIO and CoreAudio are your best options as they have the potential for achieving the lowest possible latency. Latency is the delay from the soundcard input to the soundcard output. 2. Select the desired sample rate. Make sure its supported by your audio interface we suggest starting out with 44100, because virtually all sound cards support this sample rate. 3. Choose your output device. Most soundcards nowadays have drivers specifically written for them. We recommend using those drivers whenever possible.

This section explains how to set up an installed MIDI device (USB being most common for MIDI these days). When launching PRO-53 for the first time, your MIDI device will be turned off. To use it, you need to turn the input on. If you cant see any device listed in the window, this means PRO-53 has not detected your MIDI device. Please make sure that it is turned on and plugged into a free MIDI or USB port. Possibly the device driver has not been correctly installed. Please see your MIDI devices documentation for further information. When all is done, close the dialog by clicking the OK button and start using PRO-53.

Load and play

After setting up your audio and MIDI interface, you are ready to use PRO-53. The factory sounds are already loaded after startup. Trigger a note by clicking on the PRO-53 Keyboard Area, or play a key on your MIDI keyboard.

You should now hear a sound! While holding down a note, tweak the MIDI modulation wheel, or drag the MOD control (at the left of the PRO-53 keyboard) with the mouse. This should significantly change the sound of your PRO-53, e.g. by adding a vibrato effect.

This quickstart only illustrates the basic functions of PRO-53, so read the manual when youre ready to become a power user. Meanwhile, have fun with PRO-53!

In order to load a completely new sound, click on the PROGRAM display (as shown in the illustration above) and drag it upwards. This scans through all loaded sounds, also updating the PROGRAM NAME display. (Note that you can grab each digit separately to quickly switch to a specific program number)

Select program 231 called Japan Square. Play some notes; finally sustain one of them. Then move the CUTOFF control found in the FILTER section of the instruments panel: Click the control knob with your mouse and move the mouse upwards the sound brightens up.

Additionally, switch the HPF control on by clicking on it once. This turns the low-pass filter into a high-pass filter. Finally, increase the amount of audible delay effect: Have a look at the DELAY EFFECT section and turn the WET knob to a middle position. Now you should hear a lot more of delay. For additional effects, turn off the HPF switch and increase the effects LO CUT value, as shown below. The echo of the delay effect will now fade away by applying an additional filter, which is very audible when playing short notes on the keyboard.
