Reading Comprehension
• Read the questions and find the answers from the passage/ poem.
• Guess the words nearest to the meaning while attempting vocabulary in the context of the
passages. If in doubt, leave one line space, go on to the next question and come back to
the question after attempting the rest of the questions.
• Remember that you can score well in the reading section if you practice a lot of extra-
unseen reading passages.
Note Making
• The passage should be read through quickly to get the gist of the matter, this is called
skimming.
• The second reading should be slower.
• Should locate the key words, notice how the author develops the theme.
• Think of a suitable title or heading.
• The notes will deal with the main points logically and systematically presented in a
note form, with abbreviations.
Points to Remember…
• Notes should always be short. Avoid complete sentences and all important
information should be presented logically.
• The heading should be in the centre, the first alphabet of each word should be in
capital except linking words. E.g. The History of Tea.
• The main heading is sub divided into sub headings and the sub headings are again
divided into sub points.
• The sub points can be divided into minimum 2 and maximum 3 Sub Sub Points. (as
required)
• Meaningful abbreviations are to be used in the notes and key to the abbreviations
need to be written after the notes.

An Example
Read the following passage carefully:-
The work of the heart can never be interrupted. The heart’s job is to keep oxygen rich blood
flowing through the body. All the body’s cells need a constant supply of Oxygen, especially
those in the brain. The brain cells live only four to five minutes after their oxygen is cut off,
and death comes to the entire body.
The heart is a specialized muscle that serves as a pump. This pump is divided into four
chambers connected by tiny doors called valves. The chambers work to keep the blood
flowing round the body in a circle.
At the end of each circuit, veins carry the blood to the right atrium, the first of the four
chambers 2/5 oxygen by then is used up and it is on its way back to the lung to pick up a
fresh supply and to give up the carbon dioxide it has accumulated. From the right atrium the
blood flows through the tricuspid valve into the second chamber, the right ventricle. The right
ventricle contracts when it is filled, pushing the blood through the pulmonary artery, which
leads to the lungs – in the lungs the blood gives up its carbon dioxide and picks up fresh
oxygen. Then it travels to the third chamber the left atrium. When this chamber is filled it
forces the blood through a valve to the left ventricle. From here it is pushed into a big blood
vessel called aorta and sent around the body by way of arteries.
Heart disease can result from any damage to the heart muscle, the valves or the pacemaker. If
the muscle is damaged, the heart is unable to pump properly. If the valves are damaged blood
cannot flow normally and easily from one chamber to another, and if the pacemaker is
defective, the contractions of the chambers will become un-coordinated.
Until the twentieth century, few doctors dared to touch the heart. In 1953 all this changed
after twenty years of work, Dr. John Gibbon in the USA developed a machine that could take
over temporarily from the heart and lungs. Blood could be routed through the machine
bypassing the heart so that surgeons could work inside it and see what they were doing. The
era of open heart surgery had begun.
In the operating theatre, it gives surgeons the chance to repair or replace a defective heart.
Many parties have had plastic valves inserted in their hearts when their own was faulty. Many
people are being kept alive with tiny battery operated pacemakers; none of these repairs
could have been made without the heart – lung machine. But valuable as it is to the surgeons,
the heart lung machine has certain limitations. It can be used only for a few hours at a time
because its pumping gradually damages the bloods cells.
On the basis of your reading of the above passage make notes on it, using headings & Sub
headings. Use recognizable abbreviations wherever necessary (minimum 4). Use a format
you consider suitable. Supply an appropriate title to it.
(a) Heart
1) Function of Heart
1.1 vital for living - never stop wrkg.
1.2 supplies oxygen rich blood to diff. parts of the body.
2) Structure of the heart

4.3 enabled open heart surgery
4.4 Limitation
4.4.1 can be used only for a few hrs. at a time.
4.4.2 damages flood cells.
Key to abbreviations used
• diff. - Different
• inv. - Invented
• div. - Division
• chamb. - Chambers
• hist. - History
• hrs. - Hours
(b) Summary
The heart is a vital organ of the body, which never stops working. It supplies oxygen rich
blood to all parts of the body. It is divided into four chambers inter connected by valves.
Blood is purified in the lungs and arteries carry it to different parts of the body. Heart disease
can be caused by weak muscles, defective valves or a defective pace maker. The era of open-
heart surgery began in 1953 when Dr. Gibbon developed the heart lung machine.
Replacement of valves and other areas of a damaged heart is now possible.

This letter is to complain about the GPS systems I purchased from your outlet on 23rd
November. Unfortunately this time I am dissatisfied with the service you have provided.
The GPS systems are not functioning well and are not working smoothly. The locations
displayed are not accurate. I have been a loyal customer of yours for the last 4 years and have
successfully made many purchases over the years. This incident makes me extremely
disappointed. I received a lot of complaints from many of the students’ parents regarding the
inefficiency of the new system installed. This has left me in a very embarrassing situation. I
hope by now you have an idea about the need of the hour and the least you can do now is to
replace all the faulty devices at the earliest.
I believe that you will not let me down and upset me this time. As this incident has left me in
a tight spot, I doubt it will affect our business relationship in the coming years. Therefore I
expect you to do the needful at the earliest act immediately for a healthy business
relationship.
Yours faithfully

Letter to the Editor
Write a letter to the editor of the Deccan Chronicle about the poor and unhygienic condition
of the Corporation Land adjoining your school premises. It has become a health hazard for
your school children. You are Amrita/Anurag of the SSVG Senior Secondary School,
Chennai.
5 February, 2016
The Editor
Deccan Chronicle
Chennai
Sir
Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I wish to draw the attention of the
authorities to the filthy corporation land next to the SSVG Sr. Sec. School, Chennai.
Students come to school, in search of education and values. School is a place where children
are taught to be educated and responsible citizens of the world, to be environment friendly
and keep their surroundings clean. However, the land adjoining the school premises is in a
deplorable condition, as domestic waste and garbage of the neighboring houses are thrown
here with no one from the Municipality to clean it. With the spread of Zika virus on the rise,
it is alarming to see the inefficiency of the authorities. One case of malaria has already been
registered by one student of the school.
I have written to the concerned authorities earlier, but no action has been taken so far. I hope
this serves as a wake-up call to the authorities and strict action is taken, before it becomes a
major health hazard.
Yours faithfully

For this situation the government is to blame. These elected members belong to the people
who can afford to spend lakhs in a private hospital, only here the money comes from the
taxpayers' pocket. What they need to understand is that the needs of the many outweigh the
needs of the few. By neglecting healthcare in their policies they are not only toying with
millions of lives, they also ruin India from an economic standpoint. If healthcare falters, the
labor force weakens, foreign investment drops and India stumbles. Hence, if politicians wish
to avoid this catalytic chain reaction and keep their pockets full, it is in their best interest to
keep the people richer. After all health is wealth…
India will be able to replace fever with fervor, stupor with stringent rules, and maladies with

There is a subtle difference in writing a speech as compared to an article. The speech begins
with a formal salutation to the Chief Guest(s), fellow speakers and the audience. The most
challenging task before the speaker is to make the audience interested. A speech ends with a
note of thanks to the audience. Now let’s check out the basic structure of a speech.
Format of a Speech
Introduction
Summing up
Conclusion
Introduction
• You could start with a striking pre-speech note to interest your audience.
• You could also refer to some recent issue that affects the audience, an anecdote or
a story or historical reference could give you a good beginning.
• The next step is to greet the Chief Guest(s) fellow speakers and the audience.
• Specify that occasion of the speech.
• Announce the topic of your speech.
Summing up
Summarize the most important points in your speech.
Conclusion
Depending on the purpose of your speech, conclude with a call for action, an appeal, a
request/ warning, a request or an expression of thanks.
Marking Scheme
Format : 1 Mark

Content : 4 Marks

Example
You are representing your school at the Jawaharlal Nehru Declamation Contest and the topic
given to you is ‘Is Death Penalty Morally Justified?’ Write your speech in 150-200 words.
You are Navjit/ Namita.
What if I told you that there has been another terrorist attack on Mumbai where thousands of
people have been killed? What if I told you that another innocent 18-year-old has been raped
in Delhi? What if I told you that a man murdered an entire family simply because they did not
follow the same religion as him? And now what if I said that the culprits of all of these cases
have been apprehended and it was now up to you to decide whether they live or die.
Good afternoon to everyone. I am Navjit Singh and I am here to tell you whether the death
sentence is morally justified or not. But first I need to know whether any of the crimes I just
listed above were morally justified or not. Why would a group of people want to kill
hundreds of innocent people? To deal with the population crisis? Today most terrorist attacks
happen due to extremist groups. Extremists who use the fear of God to further their own
twisted goals. To show their supremacy.
Locally, murders happen infrequently. Homicides tend to happen due to feuds, vendettas, as
means of revenge, even family problems. For such cases the crime committed is due to rage
or hatred. Fear leads to anger, anger to hate and hate to suffering. But it is easy to let go of
fear hence these crimes will rarely be replicated. Here the death sentence isn’t part of the
equation. But what about when hundreds are murdered. When thousands are killed. Those
aren’t due to fear. Those are……… well I wouldn't know. I am not such. But here the death
sentence is a must. yes, the counterargument is that the jury cannot play God but didn’t the
people committing the atrocity do the same. Didn’t THEY play God?
Why does rape happen? Lust? Rage? A feeling of dominance? Majority of rapes that are
reported in India are of men against women. There are several cases where the heinous crime
goes unreported but we won’t go there. In many cases the punishment is a few years in jail
and then the culprit is back on the streets. In some cases, the accused even receives bail. The
man only spends a few years in jail but what about the victim? She will have to spend her
entire life in a jail of her own? How does anyone recover from that? Well, you don’t. And that
is the cold hard truth.
In conclusion all I wish to say is that if a person decides to end the lives of hundreds, he
doesn’t deserve to live. If he wishes to destroy someones life forever……… Demons do walk
this Earth.

DEBATE WRITING
Let’s Understand ………..
A debate is a formal contest of argumentation in which two opposing teams defend and attack
a given proposition. It is a persuasive manner of speaking with the aim of converting the view
of another person, or an audience, to your own point of view.
In this speech, the speaker speaks either for or against the issue being discussed.
Points to remember:
• Open by addressing the audience with ‘Respected chairperson, members of the jury, and
dear friends’, or begin with a simple ‘Good morning, ladies and gentlemen’.
• Begin the first paragraph by making your stand clear, that is, mention ‘the motion tabled
before the house is …’ and state whether you’re speaking ‘strongly in favour of’… or ‘firmly
against…’ the issue.
• Develop 3–4 good points in support of your stand and negate at least two points of your
opponent.
• Try to give a strong example with your best point.
• Language structures used should be specific to a debate.
• At least one point could be built up by asking a series of questions for more effective
presentation. For example, instead of making a statement such as ‘class room teaching
methods even today are often mundane and boring…’, it would be more effective if the point
was conveyed thus— ‘In today’s technology-driven world, may I ask why classroom teaching
methods are still so mundane and boring?’
• Conclude with your strongest point and reiterate your stand once again (use a quotation if
possible).

Example
On the National Debate Forum, the topic given to the students is ‘Should college
students or even Class XII students be given unlimited freedom?’ Write a speech for or
against the topic in about 200–250 words.
A very good afternoon, Members of the Jury, my worthy opponent, and dear audience,
Teenage proclaims itself near adulthood. So shouldn’t a teenager be allowed to probe the
mysteries of the world all on his/her own? I firmly disagree with the statement, believing the
last few years of adolescence sets in place the events that decide the rest of a person’s life.
These years could make or break one’s character, and thus, some kind of guidance is
necessary for young and impressionable minds.
My worthy opponents have, time and again, reiterated that teenagers are capable of
discriminating the good from the bad as they are on the threshold of adulthood, saying there
isn’t “much more” that can be learnt in few more years. I disagree with this thought: too
much curiosity can lead to added confusion, even chaos. Teenagers today are in the dark
regarding issues of right and wrong. We read of cases where teenagers join militant groups,
conduct rape, and even kill. The mass shooting at Columbine was masterminded by
teenagers, after all. Some kind of parental guidance should be exercised on teenagers
regarding the kind of movies to be watched, the games to be played, friends to be had etc.
Some of us may strongly protest as to why can’t we be on our own and enjoy life. But the
truth is that the world consists of both good and bad things and teenagers are not in a position
to differentiate between the grey areas amidst good and bad. So parents’ guidance - to a
certain extent - is essential.
Therefore, I think that while creative urges and the inquisitiveness of teenagers about the
goings-on in the world should not be suppressed with too much parental interference,
teenagers, on their part should not insist on complete freedom to make their choices in life.
