The concept of thermodynamics with respect to Biology
Definition:
Biological thermodynamics is the quantitative study of the energy transductions that occur in or
between living organisms, structures, and cells and of the nature and function of the chemical processes
underlying these transductions.i

Further Explanation:
With the basic definition out of the way, thermodynamics has been vastly implemented in Biology as a
catalyst for rapid development in this field. Thermodynamics is directly linked with the principles of
chemistry, frankly, speaking biochemistry.

First Law of thermodynamics in Biological Systems:

Energy in the Body of a living organism is transferred from on from to another in the same way it is
transferred outside of the body. For instance in the process of photosynthesis light energy absorbed is
converted to many forms of energy such as chemical energy.

Second law of thermodynamics in Biological Systems:

As with all the other biological processes , transfer of energy from one form to the other can not be 100
percent efficient. For instance using the same example I used above not all the light energy is absorbed
by the pant, some of it is reflected by the plant. Hence second law holds in these cases as well.

Thermodynamics with respect to Nanotech

There have been many research papers written on the contribution of Thermodynamics towards the
advancement of nanotechnology. Referred to as Nano-thermodynamics , at first it was said that it has
no importance at such minute levels. Later on studies showed that thermodynamics plays a important
role in nanotech.
Some common laws explaining my point further are
 Tsallis’ Theory
 Hills’ Theory

Some practical Examples

 Melting point of NPs
 Energy Bandgap of NPs
 Nanochips being developed my Meta.
Thermodynamics becomes remarkably important in nanotechnology and other fields as well,
where the energy relationship with heat and temperature is a significant factor to reveal hidden
phenomena. Properties such as thermal resistance, thermal permeability etc. all are of
importance at nanoscopic level.
Importance of Thermodynamics
To state the importance of thermodynamics I would simply put forth the quote of Einstein ‘A theory is
the more impressive the greater the simplicity of its premises is, the more different kinds of things it
relates, and the more extended is its area of applicability. Therefore, the deep impression that classical
thermodynamics made upon me. It is the only physical theory of universal content concerning which I am
convinced that, within the framework of applicability of its basic concepts, it will never be overthrown’.
