    Chapter 1

    Introduction

    Background of the study

    In the 21st century, there are numerous advancement and invention in technology that
    change the way we lived and of of those is the social media. Social media revolutionized the way
    we connect and interact with our peers. It is one of the most powerful tool today that enables us
    to connect to almost anyone, create a community, and enables us to share our thoughts and
    opinions freely. In the Philippines, there are around 80 million active social media user out of
    110 million of the total population. On the other hand, at the same time social media users grow
    and their average time spent daily extend, the rate of mental health issues such as depresssion,
    anxiety, and stress, are significantly increasing. Therefore this study seeks to answer how social
    media use affects people mental health, especially students, and to confirm whether or not social
    media use and mental health issues among students are correlated.

    Statement of the Problem

    Social media such as Facebook and Twitter has revolutionized the way people connect
    and interact with each other. However, over the past decades the rate of mental health issues such
    as clinical despression, anxiety, and suicidal rate has increased at the same time in the growth of
    social media platforms. Mental health issues can affect a student’s energy level, ability to focus,
    and hinders students’ability to learn . Research indicates that depression is linked to lower
    general average and test scores compare to the ones who have healthier mental health. It seems
    that the way people use social media and mental health issues are correlated. The purpose of this
    study is to confirm whether social media use is related to increased rate in mental health
    problems in students of General Mariano Alvarez Technical High School. Specifically, it aims
    to seek the following questions:

    1. What is the average time spent using social of student of GMATHS?


    2. How many grade 12 HUMSS students use social media such as Facebook and Twitter?
    3. What is the most used social media among grade 12 HUMSS student of GMATHS?
    4. What are the factors responsible on why students use social media?
    5. How many grade 12 HUMSS stusents are experiencing mental health issus such as
    depression and anxiety?

    Significance of the Problem

    The aim of this study is to determine whether social media use is correlated to mental
    health problems. The findings of the study will inform students of General Mariano Alvarez
    Technical High School on how social media use influence their mental health, as well as how
    their mental health is importance for their academic performance.

    Scope and limitations

    This study is delimited only for 150 grade twelve Humanities and Social Science
    (HUMSS)’s students of General Mariano Alvarez Technical High School academic year 2022-
    2023.. Therefore, students from other schools or students from past academic years are not
    included in this research. This study will use survey and wuestionners intrnded to determine the
    social media use of GMATHS’ students.

    While doing this research, some respondents may have use fake or non genuine
    information which could result to unreliable information which could weaken the evidence. As a
    result, in order to maintain reliable data, we will create strict instructions and agreement in order
    to keep honest response.

    Research Hypothesis

    Ho1

    This study assumes that social media usage such as Facebook is responsible for students
    of GMATHS developing mental health issues such as social anxiety, depression, and fear of
    missing out.

    Ho2

    This study assumes that gender is not a factor whether student is likely to develop mental
    health issue using social media platgorms

    Input table shows who ebill be the respondents of the study. Process table shows what
    nethods will be use to seek answers from the respondents of the study. Output table shows
    the anticipated outcome of the study.

    Definition of Terms

    Social media: websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or
    to participate in social networking.
    Mental health: Mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope
    with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their
    community

    Academic performance: Academic performance is the measurement of student


    achievement across various academic subjects. Teachers and education officials typically
    measure achievement using classroom performance, graduation rates and results from
    standardized tests.
