THE PROBLEM AND IT’S BACKGROUND

Introduction

Given the prevalence of social media use, it is vital to understand


the impact it plays on students’ mental health. The purpose of this study
was to shed light and better understand how frequent social media
platforms can affect students’ mental health. Particularly, this study
focused on the frequent usage of social media and its relevance to
students mental health.

Social media and networking sites emerged in the 20th century and
since then have been evolving and growing exponentially. Social media
can be defined as “forms of electronic communication (such as websites
for social networking and microblogging) through which users create
online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and
other content.

In the century called digital age, computer and internet have


gained an absolutely central importance in human and social life.
In connection, as an educational tool, social media enriches learning by
giving both students and teachers opportunity to connect in new and
very exciting ways thereby encouraging flexible mode of learning.
wherein flexible learning expands the choice on what, when and how.

The use of social media platforms has increasingly become


ubiquitous in the lives of students across the globe. As such, the impact
of these platforms on student mental health has become a major
concern of educators and parents. Studies have shown that the use of
social media can have both positive and negative effects on students’
mental health. Social media can be a valuable tool for connecting
students with peers and providing access to information and resources,
it can also be a source of stress and anxiety for many students. Hence,
it is important to understand the effects of social media on student
mental health in order to ensure that students are using these platforms
safely and responsibly.

However, even though social media is really beneficial to students


there are still negative effects of using social media to electronian
students’ mental health and some are as follows: multiple studies have
found a strong links between heavy and an increased risk for
depression, anxiety, self-harm including increased feelings of loneliness,
increased risk of cyberbullying, decreased feelings of self-worth and
even suicidal thoughts. Social media is eclipsing any positive role it
could potentially play.

Social Media has a bad effects on today's generation because using


it can affect our mental health. A serious issue among students’ social
media addiction has led to disastrous consequences. And most of the
students use the social media platforms to chat than for school purposes
and they can no longer stop the flow of information and knowledge
because now the new world of social networking allows free sharing of
thoughts through online sites. Social media may also promote negative
experiences such as: Inadequacy about your life or appearance. Since
internet today is the most important source of information and the
growing dimensions of the use of social media by a student’s cannot be
underestimated. This is because majority of the students devoted more
attention and time to social media than do their studies and they cannot
pass their examinations on time. Students also suffering addiction to
different social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok
and Online games and loss their mental focused to studies .

As a result, a lot of people are worried about how to improved their


mental health and get healthier. Students today use social media sites
on a variety of levels. In order to ascertain the impact of social media
use on electronian students' mental health, this research study aims to
observe and evaluate the extent to which students at the Electron
College of Technical Education School utilize social media. The research's
only overarching goal is to offer substantial insights that improve the
mental health of electronian students.
STATEMENTS OF THE PROBLEM

This study generally aimed and ascertain to determine the use


of social media platforms and its impact to electronian students’
mental health.
Specifically, it sought to answer the questions:

1.To what extent social media platforms is used by students relative


to:
a. membership to social networks
b. length of time that students have been using social
media
c. hours spent by students on social media activities

2. How does social media used and affect or impact the


electronian students’ mental health?

3. What are the positive and negative effects of social media to


electronian students?

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
This research study will be based to different concept about the
use of social media platforms and its impact to electronian students’
mental health. Study begins with a set of observation to data to
interpret or interview and as a student’s study the collected data or
impact of social media to students’ mental health, they generate a
need for facts, right way of using social media and good advice to
students about the effect of social media. All students discussed the
impact of social media to their mental health journey, from when
they were first feeling unwell, to how their deterioration was first
detected, to how they managed their mental health problem cause
by social media day-to-day. Their journey centered on their
experiences of getting help, whether it was from mental health
services, other people or themselves and stopping themselves from
using social media most of the time. They classify the study by
considering the negative and positive impact of social media to
students’ mental health, such as the amount of students’
responsibility for their health, for them to take care of themselves
and avoid having mental health illness. Active students who use
different social media platforms may involve, for example, students
experiencing lack of knowledge and mental illness. Students must
take more responsibility for their own mental health and how to
overcome with it.

Figure 1 shows the Visual models of negative and positive impact of

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The importance of this study is to discuss the used of social


media platforms and its impact to electronian students’ mental
health. This study was significant to the Students, Teachers and
Future Researchers.
STUDENTS - This study will be benefits to the students to know
what are the good and negative effect or impact of social media to
them and to know how are the proper way of using social media.

TEACHER'S- This study helps the teachers in instructing pupils on


efficient use of social media. Understand the impact of social media
to their students, enable them to educate and raise awareness
among the students about the impact it may have.

FUTURE RESEACHERS- This study will help the future researchers


to guide them if they want to do the same research.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS

This study focused on the Used and Impact of Social Media


Platforms to the Mental Health of Students of Electron College of
Technical Education School. The researchers and the data collection
will be conducted a study seeking for knowledge and opinions of
selected respondents of the study and were chosen to represent as a
affected population.

The study will not cover any other problems that are not related
and considered as the used of social media platforms and its impact
to electronian students’ mental health. It covers only the research on
the respondents who currently studying on Electron College of
Technical Education School. The research would also focus on the
impact of the social media to students’ mental health that make the
students spend the majority of their time using different platforms
instead of accomplishing their school works. Researchers observe
and prepared an interview question to all of the respondents for
completion. The results of this study will only be applicable to the
respondents and will not use to harm and used to the used of social
media platforms and its impact to electronian students’ mental
health who do not belong in this study. The questions that the
researchers create will be the primary source of data . And the only
concern of this study is the used of social media platforms and its
impact to electronian students’ mental health.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Research- It is defined as the creation of new knowledge and the


use of existing knowledge in a new and creative way so as to
generate new concept, methodologies and understanding.

Study- The devotion of time and attention to acquiring knowledge


on an academic subject, especially by means of books.

Social media- It is a websites and applications that enable users to


create and share content or to participate in social networking.

Social Networking- It is the use of internet-based social media


sites to stay connected with friends, family, colleagues, or
customers.
Health Condition- It means a physical or mental illness, injury,
impairment, or condition.

Health - The state of being free from illness or injury.

Mental Health - It is a state of our emotional, psychological, and


social well-being in which an individual can realize his or her own
potential, cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively
and make a contribution to the community.

Depression- It is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of


sadness and loss of interest and can interfere with your daily
functioning.

Anxiety- It is your body's natural response to stress that it's a


feeling of fear or apprehension about what's to come. The first day
of school, going to a job interview, or giving a speech may cause
most people to feel fearful and nervous.

Stress- It is a state of worry or mental tension caused by a difficult


situation.

Addiction - A treatable, chronic medical disease involving complex


interactions among brain circuits, genetics, the environment, and an
individual's life experiences.
Impact- It have a strong effect on someone or something, And have
an effect on, change or benefit to the economy, society, culture,
media, health, mental health and the environment or quality of life.
