SRI RAMACHANDRA INSTITUTE OF HIGHER EDUCATION &

RESEARCH
SRI RAMACHANDRA MEDICAL COLLEGE
DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY

Pen to paper workshop was conducted from 18 to 22 February 2020. 23

participants and 2 observers were part of this workshop. Resource faculties were
from University of Tennessee, Dartmouth school of medicine and also from
SRIHER.

Lecture sessions were put to maximum use during the group activity and
primed the participants to the preliminary aspects of manuscript writing making
them no longer uncomfortable in this task along with intricacies on how
sentences should be worded to give the intended overall meaning, are how the
day 1 session impacted the participants. Escalated the knowledge of participants
with regard to literature search, data analysis and interpretation which gradually
built on their day1 experiences in alignment with title, need for study and
materials and methods. Being budding researchers, taking onus of their work
and nurturing appropriate publication ethics and etiquette was also a nice take
home message. Day 3 session was extremely worthwhile in assisting
participants to perform structured and focussed literature search, to write a brief
and informative case report in adherence with the Do’s and Don’ts and choosing
appropriate journals for publishing research work keeping in mind that the
shortcomings if any would amount to rejection. It was useful to participants in
developing appropriate skills of writing a case report and manuscript in an
impressive manner incorporating relevant literature in introduction and
discussion along with construction of appropriate figures and tables. The
sessions on Day 4 also sensitized participants on the art of writing a review
article which involves providing a state of the art understanding of the topic in
question. Day 5 sessions were extremely impactful in helping participants in
completing referencing of their manuscript, choosing appropriate journals with
a caution of predatory ones and also how to take the knowledge gained through
these sessions forward for personal and institutional development.
