FIELD STUDY 1
in a Diverse Classroom
At the end of this activity, the FS student must be able to achieve the following intended learning outcomes:
1. describe the characteristics, needs and interests of learners in a diverse classroom;
2. determine, understand, and accept the learners’ diverse background;
3. identify best practices in dealing with diversity in the classroom; and
4. value the importance of diversity of learners including differentiated learning strategies, multiple intelligence
and Learners with Special Educational Needs (LSENs) in the inclusive classroom.
LEARNING OVERVIEW:
Activity 3- PPST Domain 3: Diversity of Learners provides the opportunity to understand learners how differences in
gender, racial, cultural, and religious background affects the interaction in school, learn about the practices and strategies that
teachers use in dealing with diversity in classroom.

Activity 3– Distinctness of a Learner
FIELD STUDY 1
in a Diverse Classroom
During the first day of our Field study, October 12, 2022, we are very
nervous and anxious because that was the first time that we will experience
sitting in a classroom not as students but as observers. We first gathered at
Pangasinan State Univeristy- Bayambang Campus grounds to check the
attendance and to discuss again what we should do inside the school we are
assigned, in Bautista National High School. When we arrived in the school, we
went first to the office of the School Principal to introduce ourselves and our
course. The School Principal together with other school heads inside the office
welcomed us warmly with smile on their faces. After the short introduction they
dismissed us for us to proceed to our respective cooperating teacher. We are
assigned to Mr. Denver Seguban’s class, Grade 10- Pineda. Mr. Seguban
conducted a long quiz in preparation for the upcoming quarter exams. Since we
are not able to observe the class discussion because of the quiz, we observed
how the students behave while answering the test and even after the test. I
noticed that there few students who have near-sightedness. The teacher
addressed this problem by letting them sit in front and reading the test questions
clearly and loudly. After the quiz, he let his students check the answers while
discussing it one by one which I think an effective strategy for the students to
remember the concepts. The differences of the students, whether physically or
culturally is not a hindrance for them to learn equally. The diversity of students
may be a challenge for the teacher but these differences makes up a great
foundation for mutual respect and understanding inside and outside the
classroom.

Activity 3– Distinctness of a Learner
FIELD STUDY 1
in a Diverse Classroom
Read the following carefully before you begin to observe a class. Write your observation report on the space
provided.
1. How much interaction is there in the classroom? Describe how the students interact with one another
and with the teacher. Are there groups that interact more with the teacher than others?
- Since the teacher conducted a long quiz, the students are focused on the
test questions in front. During the quiz, the students are behaved. The
students are free to ask questions and tell their concerns to the teacher.
After the quiz, during the checking of the answers, most of the students
are participative in verifying their answers. The teacher is considerate
with corrections. I notice that some students are very quiet and inactive.
2. Observe the learner’s behavior during the conduct of the class. How do they behave and interact
differently?
- I observe that the students are divided from those who are participative
and those who are not. You can easily determine the active students
during class hours because they are usually the ones who ask questions
or answer the questions. The teacher’s distance from the students is a
great factor for the students at the back not to get the question that’s why
the teacher is roaming around the classroom while telling the test
questions.

Activity 3– Distinctness of a Learner

3. Describe the relationship among the learners. Do the learners cooperate with or compete against each
other?
- Most of the students of Grade 10-Pineda are attentive and participative. The
teacher maintained a good rapport with the student but he still imposes authority
towards them. Mutual respect is clearly seen inside the classroom. The students
are cooperative not only with the teacher but also with their classmates. I don’t
think that they see each other as competitors because I observed that most of
them are taking considerations in checking the papers. The teacher handled the
4. Who among the students participated actively? Who among them asked most for help?
- The students seated in front of the classroom are the ones who
participated actively during the class discussion. They are mostly the
ones to who asked questions and also answered questions. The students
at the back are behave and quiet compared to the students in front. There
is one student who asked for help when he can’t read the questions

5. When a learner is called and cannot answer the teacher’s question, do the classmates try to help him?
Or do they raise hand, so that the teacher will call them instead?
Analyze
Identify the person who play the key roles in the relationships and interactions in a virtual
classroom. What roles do they play? Is there somebody who appears to be the leader, a
mascot/joker, an attention seeker, a little teacher, a doubter/ pessimist?
- I noticed that their class president always takes the lead in the class and I can
also see her as a little teacher because she guides her classmates about the
instructions. One of the male students appears to be an attention seeker to me
because he butts in even though he’s not the one being asked. Most of the
students are very cooperative with the teacher especially about jokes and fun
time.
How does the teacher influence the class interaction considering the individual differences of the
students in a classroom?
- The teacher let everyone say their thoughts if they have any, one at a time. He
kept the mood of the classroom very light and comfortable. It is seen on how the
students interacted with their teacher as well as with their classmates. I think that
the teacher handled the diversity of his students properly.

Reflect
1. How did you feel as you observed in the classroom? Did you feel a sense of oneness
or unity among the learners, and between the teacher and the learners?
2. In the future, how would you want the learners in your classroom to interact? How
will you, make it happen?

Activity 3– Distinctness of a Learner
FIELD STUDY 1
in a Diverse Classroom
At the end of this activity, the FS student must be able to achieve the following intended learning outcomes:
a) differentiate the characteristics and needs of learners from different development levels; and
b) choose effective strategies to address the diverse needs of the learners according to their developmental levels.
LEARNING OVERVIEW:
Activity3- PPST Domain 3: Diversity of Learners provides the opportunity to observe learners of different ages and grade
levels virtually. It highlights the differences in their characteristics and needs. As a future educator, it is important to determine
learners’ characteristics and needs so that you will be able the implement learning activities and assessment that are all
developmentally appropriate.
Observation/Interview
Read the following carefully before you begin with this then write your observation report on the space provided.
1. Record the data you gathered about the learners’ characteristics and needs in this matrix.
2. Shadow a learner from preschool, elementary and high school during the conduct of their class.
3. This will allow you to compare the characteristics and needs of learners at different levels. The items under
each domain are by no means exhaustive. These are sample indicators you may add other aspects which
you may have observed.

example of this principle so
it was observed during the

Reflect
1. While you were observing the learners, did you recall your experiences when you were at their age? What
similarities or differences do you have with the learners you observed?
- When I was about their age, I am also very active during discussion. I am also
very fond of fun interaction during classes. I also used to recite a lot and
participate on activities inside h school. I am also well-behaved during classes
and I listen very attentively to my teachers. If I have questions, I am afraid to
ask my concern to my teacher especially about the topics or lessons that I
don’t understand. I also remember that my teacher also integrate technology in
the process of learning by using laptop and projector.
2. Think of a teacher you cannot forget for positive or negative reasons. How did she/he or not help you with your
needs (physical, emotional, social, and cognitive)? How did it affect you?
- The teacher I could never forget is Mrs. Olivia R. Panaga. She is my Grade 12
adviser. She was the one who motivated me to enroll in Pangasinan State
University- Bayambang Campus. She believes in my capacity as a learner and
as a person. I may forget the academic lessons she taught me but I could
never forget the life lesson she made me realize. She is not only a teacher to
me but also a great friend whom I can run to when things gets hard.
- We are given the chance to observe in Bautitsta National High School Grade
10- Pineda students in a face-to-face scenario. I learned a lot upon observing
the students especially about their behavior and interactions with each other
inside the classroom. In addition, I was able to understand the school rules and
regulations implemented in Bautista National High School. We are very lucky
that we are assigned in a school where healthy environment is maintained.
