GLOBALIZATION AND

AND

PLURALISM:
NEW CHALLENGE IN

IN

ETHICS
GLOBALIZATION
Globalization is a process of interaction and integration
among the people, companies and
governments of different nations, a process driven by
international trade and investment and aided by
information technology

Moral Challenges of Globalization

Along with the globalization comes ethical or moral issues. If

the values of people, particularly moral values, are
influenced by culture, then globalization where people are
exposed to new ways of doing things further enhances
moral development, particularly global moral
consciousness.

Global Ethics
Global ethics is concerned with the critical ethical inquiry into the nature and
justification of values and norms that are global in kind and into the various issues
that arise such as world poverty and international aid, environmental problems,
peace and security, intervention, human rights, gender equality, child labour,
torture, scarce resources, trafficking, migration, climate change, global trade,
medical tourism

There are global problems or issues that require

corresponding ethical considerations

Global Poverty
Fr. Gerry Orbos, said: “If only we learned to
share,no one will have so little, and no one
will have too much”

There is a moral obligation of wealthy nations to help

the global poor. But it is not as
simple as giving dole outs or donations.

There are global problems or issues that require

corresponding ethical considerations

Migration
People living in poor places, or being ruled by
oppressive, dictatorial or tyrannic regimes long to
migrate to place where they believe life is better.
The moral or ethical issue is whether or not the
receiving countries, in a Christian spirit, will simply
open their doors without considering the negative
impact of the migrants on their own citizens.

There are global problems or issues that require

corresponding ethical considerations

Environmental Ethics
Environmental ethics states that there is a moral
duty of moral agents “to protect or at
least refrain from damaging” the environment.

Its use and development should be sustainable, that is, its

use and development to “meet the needs of the present”
should not compromise its ability to meets the needs of
future generations.

PLURALISM

AS A NEW CHALLENGE IN ETHICS

PLURALISM
philosophical theory that there is
more one basic substance or
principle.
In epistemology, pluralism is the
position that there is not one
consistent means of approaching
truths about the world, but rather
many.
MORAL PLURALISM
also known as ethical pluralism/
value pluralism
is an idea that there can be
conflicting moral views that each
worthy of respect.
Is a meta ethical theory, rather
than a theory of normative ethics or
a set of value in itself

DID YOU KNOW
Berlin and Weber is agree to moral pluralism but some philosopher says
the moral pluralism is a defective? At first it seems perfect, attractive and
flawless but moral agent will be clueless as to what to do when two or
more of its value or theories indicate inconsistent to practical imperatives.

MORAL PLURALIST fail to prove that the problem of conflicting values is

principle insoluble . it gives us no moral standard and offers no moral
power

MILLENIALS AND

FILLENIALS:
ETHICAL CHALLENGES

AND RESPONSES
ETHICS
Ethics or moral philosophy is a branch of philosophy that
"involves systematizing, defending, and recommending
concepts of right and wrong behavior".
RELIGION
Religion is usually defined as a social-cultural system of

designated behaviors and practices, morals, beliefs, worldviews,

texts, sanctified places, prophecies, ethics, or organizations,

that generally relate humanity to supernatural, transcendental,

and spiritual elements.

FIVE GREAT RELIGIONS OF THE WORLD
• Judaism- world's oldest monotheistic religion. Followers of Judaism believe in one
God who revealed himself through ancient prophets.
• Christianity- major religion stemming from the life, teachings, and death of Jesus
of Nazareth
• Islam- "Islam" means "submission to the will of God." Followers of Islam are called
Muslims. Muslims are monotheistic and worship one, all-knowing God, who in Arabic
is known as Allah. Followers of Islam aim to live a life of complete submission to
Allah
• Hinduism- the world's oldest religion, according to many scholars, with roots and
customs dating back more than 4,000 years.
• Buddhism- one of the world's largest religions and originated 2,500 years ago in
India. Buddhists believe that the human life is one of suffering, and that meditation,
spiritual and physical labor, and good behavior are the ways to achieve
enlightenment, or nirvana.
ETHICAL CHALLENGES
• An ethical challenge refers to the situation

whereby every alternative is morally wrong and

still one has to make a choice.

• An ethical challenge occurs when one does not

know how to behave and act in the best way.

FILINNIALS

AND

MILLENNIALS

Millennials are the demographic cohort directly following the Generation X.

It is also known as 'Generation Y or the Net Generation'. The Center for

Generational Kinetics mentions five generations that presently make up

our society and specifies birth years for each generation as follows:
MILLENNIALS
• Millennials are also called Gen Y or Generation Y, "millennials" refers to
individuals who were born between the 1981s and early 1995s.

FILLENIALS
Fillinials (Filipino Millenials) In Filipino terms, Millennials are called Filinnials. They
are described as the selfie generation and followers of social media. Increased
use and familiarity with communications, media, and digital technologies.
FILLENIALS are:
• Entitled and impulsive
• Ambitious yet lazy.
• Classic narcissists who refuse to grow up.
SEVEN BASIC TRAITS OF MILLENNIALS
1. Special -They are the most educated generation on record.
2. Sheltered - Since birth, they are known to be from many forms of

protection. They are the most protected generation since their birth.
3. Confident - They are known to be less religious, less serve the military

yet as the most educated generation.

4. Team-oriented (disputed trait)- They like to band together to socialize in

groups. In schools, they prefer working with groups rather than individuals.
5. Conventional - They take pride in their improving behavior. Their taste to

arts and music is less extreme than the previous generations.

6. Pressured - They wish to be ahead of many things, successful and take

advantage of opportunities but avoiding taking risks.

7. Achieving - They are known to be of many achievements as youngsters.

These can be associated with their being proactive in life.

Ethical Outlook
&
Cultural Identity
Millennials vs. Baby boomers
ETHICAL OUTLOOK & CULTURAL IDENTITY
Generation Y members are very upbeat and more open to change than older
generations. Based on a survey by the Pew Research Center in 2008, Millennials are
"the most likely of any generation to self-identify as liberals and are also more
supportive of progressive domestic social agenda than older generations.”

Millennials are also labeled as the "Boomerang Generation" or "Peter Pan

generation" because of their perceived tendency for delaying some rites of passage
into adulthood for longer periods than most generations before them and for living
with their parents for longer periods than previous generations.

Some authors describe Millennials' approach to social change "as pragmatic

idealism" with a deep desire to make the world a better place.

In the United Kingdom, a 2013 poll found that Millennials were more

open-minded than their parents on controversial topics. A sampling of

other findings reveals the following:

In 2013, a Pew Research Poll found that 84% of Generation Y members favored

legalizing the use of marijuana.

Concerning beliefs on ethical issues, most Millennials of every religion, race, and

ethnicity support access to affordable contraception according to a study.

And 56% of people ages 18 to 35 say that in some situations, choosing to have an

abortion "is the most responsible decision that a woman can make."
One-quarter of Millennials say that marriage has become old-fashioned and out of

date, while 71% disagree.

Millennials fall into a four-way split on "pro-life" and "pro-choice" labels. While 25%

say they are exclusively "pro-life" and 27% say they're "pro-choice," 22% rebuff both

labels and nearly 27% say that both labels describe them equally well.
Seven percent (7%) of Millennials identify either as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or

transgender.
Millennials
vs
Baby Boomers
WHO ARE THE BABY BOOMERS?
BABY BOOMER (1944-1964)

Baby Boomers are the first generation to actively declare a higher priority for work
over personal life. They generally distrust authority and large systems. Their values
were shaped primarily by a rise in civil rights activism, Vietnam, and inflation. They
are more optimistic and open to change than the prior generation, but they are also
responsible for the “Me Generation,’ “ with its pursuit of personal gratification, which
often shows up as a sense of entitlement in today’s workforce.
·Strongly adheres to their own beliefs and values.
“When I was your age... statement.
Follow through on what their religion stands for or the tradition.
Obey the authority.
