1. Two forces of 400N and 600N act at an angle of 60 0 to each other. Determine the resultant in magnitude
and direction if (i) both the forces have same sense (pull) (ii) the forces have different sense (pull &
push).

2. Find the magnitude of forces F 1 and F2 if they act at right angle, their resultant is √ 34 . If they act at an
angle 600; their resultant is 7N. [Ans: if F1=3N, F2=5N; if F1=5N, F2=3N ]

3. Determine the resultant of the given concurrent force system as shown in fig(a) & fig (b).

4. A body is acted upon by forces as below. Find the resultant of these forces. All forces are acting at a

120N acting 300 South of West (v) 90N acting 250 West of South (vi) 80N acting 400 South of East.

5. Forces 7kN, 10kN, 10kN and 3kN respectively act at one of the angular point of regular pentagon toward
the other four points taken in order. Find their resultant and direction.

6. Determine the magnitude of forces F1 and F2, as shown in fig., when the resultant of the given force
system is found to be 800N along the positive x-axis.

7. Find the fourth force (F4) required to give the resultant of the system of forces as shown in fig.

8. In the given force system, find (i) Resultant (ii) Force-couple system at A

9. A 150 x 300 mm plate is subjected by four forces as shown in fig. Determine the resultant and two points
at which the line of action of resultant intersects the edges of plate.

10. Five coplanar forces are acting on a triangular plate ABC as shown in fig. Determine the resultant and
locate the point of intersection of the resultant with the horizontal line AB.

11. Two equal loads of 2500N are supported by a flexible string ABCD at points B & C as shown in the fig.
Find the tension in the portion AB, BC and CD.

[Ans: TAB = 4330N, TBC = 2500N, TCD = 2500N]

12. A uniform wheel of 60cm diameter and weighing 1000N rest against a rectangular block 15cm high
lying on a horizontal plane as shown in fig. It is to be pulled over the block by a horizontal force P
applied to the end of a string wound around the circumference of the wheel. Find force P when the wheel
is just about to roll over the block.

13. Three cylinders are piled up in a rectangular channel as shown in fig. Determine the reaction at contact
point 6 between the cylinder A and the vertical wall of the channel.
Cylinder A: radius = 4m, mass = 15kg, Cylinder B: radius = 6m, mass = 40kg,
Cylinder C: radius = 5m, mass= 20kg

14. Two smooth cylinders with diameters 250mm & 400mm respectively are kept in a groove with slanting
surfaces making angle 600 & 300 as shown in fig. Determine the reactions at contact points A, B and C.

15. Two cylinders P and Q are kept in a channel as shown in fig. The cylinder P has a diameter of 100mm
and weight 200N and Q has a diameter of 180mm and weight 500N. Determine the reactions at all the
contact surfaces.

[Ans: R1 = 134.2N, R2 = 240.8N, R3 = 154.9N, R4 = 622.5N]

16. Two rollers of weight 50N & 100N are connected by a flexible string AB. The rollers rest on two
mutually perpendicular planes DE & DF as shown in fig. Find the tension in the string and angle θ that
it makes with the horizontal when the system is in equilibrium.

17. The frame BCD as shown in fig. supports a cylinder of weight 600N. The frame is hinged at D.
Determine the reactions at A, B, C & D.

18. A vertical pole is anchored in a cement foundation. Three wires are attached to the pole as shown in fig.
If the reaction at point A consists of reactions as shown, find the tensions in the wires.

19. A block of 50kg mass rests on a rough horizontal plane as shown in fig. If the coeff. of static and kinetic
friction between the block and plane are 0.2 & 0.15 respectively, determine the condition of block and
frictional force when: (i) P = 75N (ii) P = 120N (iii) Also determine the value of P to cause motion to
impend.

20. A rectangulr block of 100kg rests on a rough horizontal floor having coeff. of friction 0.25. What
minimum force P is required to just move the block? If the base width is 40cm, what is the maximum
height at which the force P can be applied without causing the block to tip?

21. A 6kN block rests on a horizontal plane having coeff. of friction 0.35, is attached with a string, which is
passing through a frictionless pulley and a weight of 3kN is attached at the other end of the string as
shown in fig. Determine the value of P: (a) When motion is impending towards right (b) When motion is
impending towards left.

[Ans: (a)P =1.023kN (b)P = 4.173kN]

22. In the given figure. determine the least value of P to cause motion to impend rightwards. Assume the
coefficient of friction under the blocks to be 0.2 and pulley to be frictionless.

23. Two blocks A and B of weights 1kN & 2kN, respectively are in equilibrium position as shown in fig. If
the coeff. of friction for all contact surfaces is 0.3, find force P required to move block B. Also find the
tension in the string.

[Ans: P = 1.11145kN, T = 0.2953kN]

24. Find the inclination α of the inclined plane as shown in fig. for which the block B impends sliding down
the plane. µ=0.25 for all the contact surfaces. Also find the tension in the string.

25. Two blocks A & B connected by a horizontal link of negligible weight are supported on two rough
planes as shown in fig. The coefficient of friction for block A on the horizontal plane is 0.4 and the
limiting angle of friction for block B on the inclined plane is 20 0. If block B weighs 5kN, what is the
least weight of the block A for which the system is in equilibrium?

[Ans: 10.49kN]

26. A 6m uniform ladder weighing 300N is placed against a vertical wall. Its inclination with the ground is
600. At what distance from the lower end of the ladder a man weighing 800N should climb before
slipping of the ladder starts. The coefficient of friction for all the contact surfaces is 0.2.
[Ans: 1.94m]

27. A uniform ladder 4m long weighs 200N. It is placed against a wall making an angle of 50 0 with the floor.
In addition to its own weight, the ladder supports a man of 800N at its top. Calculate: (a) The horizontal
force required to the ladder at its end resting on the floor to prevent slipping. (b) If the force is not
applied than find the inclination of the ladder with the floor so that it does not slip when the man is at its
top. The coeff. of friction between ladder and floor is 0.4 and between ladder and wall is 0.3
[Ans: (a) 275.628N (b) 65.750]

28. A uniform ladder 6m long and weighing 100N rests on a rough floor and leans against smooth vertical
wall. It is inclined 450 to the floor when the ladder starts sliding when a 600N man reaches 2m from the
ground. Find the coeff. of friction between ladder and floor.

[Ans: µ=0.476]
