12. The resultant of two force P and Q is √3Q, which makes an angle of 30o with P. Prove that P is
equal to Q or double of Q is equal to P.
13. A body of 100N weight is hung by two strings of 3 metre and 4metre length. The other ends of
the string are tied at a distance of 5metre horizontal. Find out the tension in each string.
14. A 200N weight is hung by two weightless strings 6m and 8m long. The other ends of the strings
are tied at a horizontal distance of 12m. Find out the tension in each string.
Unit 2
1. The jib of a crane is 5 meters long. The tie rod which is horizontal is tied at the upper end of
the post. The post is vertical and 3metre long. The crane supports a long of 2KN. calculate
the tension in the jib and tie rod. Ans-3.33KN and
2.66KN
4. A smooth circular cylinder of radius 2 metre is lying in a triangular groove, one side of which
makes 45 0 angle and other 30 0 angle with the horizontal. Find the reactions at the surfaces
of contact, if there is no friction and cylinder weighs 100N. Ans. :-73.20 N,51.76N
5. A sphere of weighs W hung on to a smooth wall by a rope. If the length of a rope is equal to
the radius of the sphere, find the tension in rope, its inclination with the wall and reaction of

6. Five wires are tied to the upper end of a telephone pole in horizontal plane and are applying
following pulls. 130N to west ,100 n to south , 200n to East,150 N to 60 0 towards east from
north , 180N in north –west direction . Find the value of resultant and its direction.

7. The forces 20N, 30N, 40N, 50N and 60N are acting on one of the angular points of a regular
hexagon, towards the other five angular points, taken in order. Find the magnitude and

8. Find the minimum force required to be applied on the handle of a roller of 50 cm radius and
500N weight, so that it steps over an obstacle of 10 cm height. Ans. :-

9. Find the minimum value of force to be applied on the handle of a roller of 600mm diameter
and 5KN weight, so that it steps over an obstacle of 150mm Calculate value of reaction of

12. The Five forces F1, F2, F3, and F4and F5 are acting at a
point as shown on a body as shown and the body is in
equilibrium. If F1= 18 N, F2= 22.5 N, F3=15N and F4=30N, Determine the force F5 in
magnitude and direction.

13. A roller of 300 mm radius and 100N weight is to be pulled over a curb (Step) of 150 mm
height by a horizontal force P applied to the end of a rope wound tightly around the
circumference of the roller. Find the magnitude of P required to the start the roller move
over the step.
2. A ladder is 5 meter long and weighs 75 N. Its upper end is supported on a smooth wall and lower
end on a smooth floor. The lower end is tied to wall by a 3 metre long rope. Find the tension in
rope and reaction of wall and floor. Ans.:- 28.125 N, 28.125 N, 75 Kg
3. A Bell crank Lever shown in fig is pivoted at A , AB=30cm and AC is 60 cm. Find the weight W at C
to Balance the horizontal force P of 150n applied at B. Ans.:- 61.2 N
4. Figure shown a crank lever ABC with a tension spring T. The lever weighs 0.2N/mm .Determine
the tension developed in the spring when a load of 100N is applied at A. Ans.:- 240N
5. A steel yard is of 60N weight. It Centre of gravity is 4cm to the left of fulcrum. Weight W is 10cm
to the left of the fulcrum the moving weight P is 10N and is kept at 80cm to the right of the
fulcrum. Find the value of W.
6. A steel yard is of 100N weight of center of gravity is 5cm to left of fulcrum. Weight of 60N is
10cm to left of fulcrum. Find out moving weight P if it is kept 70cm to right of fulcrum.
2. Sketch the first, second and third system of pulley and calculate velocity ratio.
3. A body resting on a horizontal plane required a pull of 80N inclined at 30 0 to the plane just to
move it was also found that a push of 100N inclined at 30 0 to the plane just moves the body.
Determine the weight of the body & coefficient of friction.

6. A body of 60N weight is kept on a rough plane inclined at 30 0 with horizontal. An upward force
of 24N is applied parallel to the plane. If body is about to slide down, find the angle of friction.

8. A Load of 1.5KN, resting on an inclined rough plane, can be moved up the plan by a force of 2KN
applied horizontally or by a force 1.25 KN applied parallel to the plan. Find the inclination of the plan

9. I) A 400 N block is resting on a rough horizontal surface for which the coefficient of friction is
0.40. Determine the force P required to cause motion to impend if applied to the block (a)

13. There are four movable pulleys. How much effort is required to be applied to lift a load of 2000N

14.In a first system of pulleys there are three movable pulleys. Find the effort required to raise a

1. A mild steel rod 20 mm diameter and 1.5 m length is subjected to an axial pull of 20 kN. If the
modulus of elasticity material is 2x105 N/sq. mm, determine (i) the stress, (ii) strain and (iii)
elongation of the bar.
2. A mild steel rod 1m long and of 30 mm x 20mm cross section is subjected to an axial force of
30kN. Calculate the stress, strain and elongation of the rod if E=200 GPa.
3. Find the stress, strain and elongation of a steel bar 30 mm diameter and 1m length with an axial
force of 7500N. Take E=2 x 105 N/sq. mm. Ans. 10.6 N/ mm2, 0.053
4. Find the diameter of a 1m long rod if it elongates by 0.6 mm by applying a tensile force of

5. A bar of 20 mm in square cross section & 200 mm length elongates by 0.16 mm on applying 100
KN Tensile Load. The contraction in Lateral side is 0.005 mm. Calculate Poisson’s Ratio & Young’s

6. A load of 5kN is to be raised with the help of a steel wire. Find the minimum diameter of the
steel wire if stress is not exceeding 100 N/sq. mm.
