Pontoon Operation Manual P2-1400 Series Germanischer Lloyd

1 Description of the Stability-Pontoon System

The system consists of a ‘stability pontoon’ and a ‘cantilever’. By creating a rigid connection between
the pontoon and the vessel the pontoon will enhance the ship’s stability considerably.

The system may only be used as described in this manual.

Both parts are stored on board the vessel and can be installed with the ship’s cranes. The pontoon can
be stored either on the hatch or in the hold (see Storage Arrangement). The cantilever will be stored
upright in the trunk on starboard side aft of crane no.1.

If needed the system will always be arranged at the retaining position:

Description Frame
Starboard Fore # 162

Only in case the ‘default position’ can not be used the system may, alternatively be arranged at one of
the following retaining positions:

Description Frame
Starboard Aft # 56
Portside Fore # 162
Portside Aft # 34

2 Safety
The corresponding warnings in the manual must be observed and followed. Negligence can lead to
serious accidents. During the described work all involved persons have to wear life jackets and
helmets.

During the lifting procedure all involved persons have to be in a sufficient safety distance to cranes
and load. During the heavy lifting procedure nobody is allowed to be on the Stability-Pontoon System.
The allowed operation limits are:

Heel: 2°
Trim: 1.6 m

The allowed environmental limits have to be observed and not to be exceeded:

Current: 3 kn

Wave height: 1m

Wind: 3 Bft

3 Stability-Pontoon
The Stability-Pontoon is a simple pontoon with 4 ballast water tanks with a total capacity of 283.0 t.
In the middle of the pontoon is a duct with hydraulic bolts to lock the pontoon with the cantilever.
These bolts can be fixed at different heights in order to adjust the pontoon to the actual draft of the
vessel (fig.1- detail 1).

Pontoon dimensions:

Weight: 115 t
Length: 12.2 m
Breadth: 10.3 m
Depth: 6.0 m
Total ballast water capacity of ballast water tanks: 283.0 t
Total ballast water capacity of void spaces: 375.8 t

See also attached Capacity Plan.

To flood the ballast water tanks the relevant valves have to be opened. The valves are located at the
bottom of the pontoon and can be operated manually from the deck. After reaching the desired
draught, the valves must be closed again. The desired draught can be checked at the draught marks.
The ballast tanks can be emptied by gravity only. Therefore, the pontoon will be lifted out of the water
slowly by crane, with its ballast valves opened. The Pontoon must not be lifted too fast because
otherwise the load on the hoisting eyes is too high. This must be checked with the load indicator of the
crane. It is not allowed to empty the pontoon while the cantilever is still inserted.

The pontoon is designed in such a way that it can be used as well as test weight for testing the ship’s
700t cargo cranes. Please refer to the company’s Crane Trial Manual for the P2-1400 series.

To reach the required total weight for the 770t overload test the pontoon needs to be filled with water
completely, i.e. the tanks and the void spaces must be filled. The Void Spaces above the tanks have to
be filled / drained through the manholes by means of portable pump. Draining can be done optionally
by means of drain plugs which are located at the sides of the pontoon just above the tank top level.

4 Cantilever
(Connecting arm)

The cantilever is fastened with one end to the pontoon (fig.1- detail 3) and with the other end to the
vessel (fig.1- detail 2). It can be lifted from the storage position into working position by means of
lifting slings attached to the two lifting pad eyes. (fig.1- detail 5). The purpose of the D-Rings (fig.1-
detail 4 and fig. 4) is to pull the Cantilever the last distance into the ship’s retaining structure.

5 Locking Bolts
Two locking bolts each are arranged in the middle of the pontoon and on the vessel at each connection
cantilever/vessel. The locking bolts are controlled by manual hydraulic pump.

Before engaging the pontoon the ship has to be trimmed to final loading draft for the intended
cargo. Then the hydraulic locking pin can be engaged and ballast can be discharged to adjust
trim and loading condition for heavy lifts.
This measure is necessary to make sure that the pontoon can be released after loading in
neutral position with no forces on locking pin and cantilever after loading of cargo.
With small changes of draft during takeover of cargo alternatively the heeling system can be
used for release forces from the pontoon locking pin

ATTENTION: Hand pump and hydraulic hoses with quick coupling has to disconnected in
any case from hydraulic jacks before pontoon operation

Drainage of ballast has to be done by gravity. Lifting forces at pontoon have not to
exceed the WWL of rigging arrangement and/or crane(see annex 7.1;7.2)

We recommend to use quick ties instead of

twistlocks to secure the empty pontoon on deck
as the hatch covers have flush foundations while
the fittings at the pontoon are recessed.

All securing fittings have to be approved by us.

7.6 Usage of Pontoon as Ballast

As an option the pontoon may be stored in hold no.1 with the tanks and void spaces filled
with water in order to lower the ship’s VCG.

For this purpose only the storage position shown in the following plan may be used as the
double bottom is reinforced only at this location.

The securing of the water-filled pontoon has to be made by special stacking cones ONLY! No
twistlocks must be used in this case!

Water ballast has to be filled and discharged in consent with ballast water management plan.
Ballast water has to be discharged into one suitable ballast tank of the vessel for further
treatment with ships ballast water treatment plant.
Flexible pumps have to be arranged on purpose.
