PART I

A. INTRODUCTION
Time signature in music has unique conducting patterns. It indicates the number of beats inherent
to each measure. The time signature is a compound meter. It has its own unique conducting pattern.
You have learned in the last lesson that conducting patterns is of great help to conductors so they
can synchronize their musical group.

B. DISCUSSION
COMPOUND TIME SIGNATURE
The time signature, there are six beats in a measure and an eighth note receives one beat. It is a
compound time signature of time signature. That is why time signature is called compound duple.
The counting pattern for time signature is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

Study the pattern below.

time signature = 6 beats per measure – A “Christmas Tree”.

When conducting a time signature, you may use the 6-beat pattern. Picture your Christmas
tree. Start by drawing the trunk with a strong downward movement. Next bounce twice to the left touching
the low hanging ornaments, then twice to the right. Finally trace your hand back up the slanted edge of your
Christmas tree back to the top.

2
You may also use the following alternate six-beat patterns for
music pieces. This pattern, like the traditional six-beat pattern, is best
used with slower songs. The double three-beat pattern is a large three-beat
pattern followed by a smaller one.
Other time signature conducting pattern are as follows:

As we make our conducting patterns within our conducting window, we can add emphasis to our
conducting.
Loud – large beat pattern, arms farther away from the body
Soft – small beat pattern, arms close to body
Fast – quick beat pattern, sharp motions
Slow – slow beat pattern, graceful motions

C. EXAMPLE
Practice the 6 beat conducting pattern while singing Dandansoy.

PART III. SUMMATIVE EVALUATION

A. Read and understand each item carefully. Write the letter of the correct answer on your answer sheet.

5
B. Write TRUE if the statement if correct. Otherwise, write FALSE.
1. In the time signature, there are eight beats in a measure
2. In the time signature, an eighth note receives one beat.
3. When conducting a time signature, you may use the 6-beat pattern.
4. There is only one 6-beat pattern that can be used in conducting a music piece.
5. The double three-beat pattern can be used for a music piece.

C. Sing the song below while conducting the time signature. Record a video of your conducting. Take

duration equal to the sum of the values of the two-tied notes.
