PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter presents the analysis and the interpretation of the data gathered by the

researchers. The collected data was extensively organized to answer the study's objectives. In

this study, the researchers used unstructured questionnaires, which is the best-suited type of

research instrument. The data were presented in a clear form by supporting it with a review of

related literature and studies.

I. TO DETERMINE THE OPINIONS OF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

ABOUT THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ROTC.

Question 1: Do you agree with the implementation of ROTC for Senior High School

students? Why?

Participant 1: I agree with the implementation of ROTC to senior high students, because

it help the students prepare and ready incase of an active war.

Participant 2: Yes, I agree with the implementation of ROTC for senior high school

students because it will teach the younger generation about the essence of patriotism.

Participant 3: Yes, I support the implementation of ROTC for senior high school

students because it is a fantastic opportunity for everyone, especially those like me who

plan to pursue criminology as a career in the future.

Participant 4: I agree with the implementation of ROTC for senior high school students

for it is beneficial. I think that this could help us on the long run for we get to learn how

to defend and fight for ourselves if danger is encountered, we will be able to protect our

own selves with the knowledge and practices that'll be gained in ROTC program.

Participant 5: Yes. It is for our own good . It is for us to be better and stronger.
MARYHILL COLLEGE
Participant 6: Yes, as a future criminology student, this will help me gain advanced

knowledge and training for what we need to expect in this course.

Participant 7: Yes, I agree with the implementation of ROTC for Senior High School

students because it will benefit us a lot especially in dangerous situations that we may

encounter in the future. The world we live in is prone to danger thus, we must

expect the unexpected. The learnings we might gather from this implementation can be

applied to protect and serve our country with patriotism.

Participant 8: Yes, because the reason ROTC have been implemented to Senior High

School is not just about us being ready for military training but if we would take a

better look, it also benefits us too, like we would learn how to do self-defense and they

also train us to build our body ready.

Question 2: What are your contradictions about this?

Participant 1: I have no contradiction about the ROTC, because it just benefit the

student in active self defense and the countries defense as well.

Participant 2: My only contradiction in implementing ROTC is the people who doesn't

want to participate in ROTC.

Participant 3: I have no contradictions about the ROTC, because it will benefit me in

many ways in the future.

Participant 4: I agree with the implementation but there is one contradiction I have

which is the time and energy it will consume for SHS students. As a senior high school

student, I always think that the time given for us to accomplish tasks is not enough and

the energy it consumes since we are loaded with tasks is already too much.

Participant 5: My only contradiction about this is the time I will spend away from my
MARYHILL COLLEGE
family.

Participant 6: My only contradiction is that I think other students will be slow to

adapt to this because if others want to ROTC, this will be an advantage for us; on the

other hand, many students that are not interested in criminology will be challenged

for their part.

Participant 7: My contradictions about this is that it might be used for bad intentions

and it might become a hindrance to people from pursuing their goals in life.

Participant 8: My contradiction about this is that senior high school students like me

already have such heavy workloads. Some of us don’t even have time to take care of

ourselves and do chores at home. Implementing the ROTC will just result in more

burden for us. This will also increase the risk of burnout for the students because of the

things that they have to do.

Question 3: Why do you think ROTC is so controversial among students?

Participant 1: ROTC is controversial to the students because we are living in an aged

of peace. ROTC has been controversial because we have been living in peace, and we

have no prior knowledge about military aggression that can bring danger and put

nations at war. My second opinion is that ROTC is controversial, because of the senior

students not caring about how hard to defend our country with the current armed

personal.

Participant 2: ROTC is controversial among students because as a senior high student,

this preparation will help me or engage me to have a discipline and be respectful

Filipino Citizen in order to help our country grow in the future also to make our

country a better place someday.

MARYHILL COLLEGE
Participant 3: ROTC is a hot topic among students because it is new to us and no one

wants to waste their time on something that will not benefit them in the future.

Participant 4: I think that ROTC is so controversial to students mainly because it

requires time and energy which I also stated on the number 2 question.

Participant 5: It is because students have a lot of work to do and at their age, they

should enjoy their youth and it is understandable that they were shocked.

Participant 6: I think ROTC is so controversial because there are so many students

who want to pursue their dreams and finish their studies already.

Participant 7: I think the reason why ROTC is so controversial among students is

because many are in favor yet many are not at the same time, especially the fact that they

would be the ones affected the most once it is implemented. People have different

perspectives they strongly hold that might cause a conflict and I think that's what

makes it controversial.

Participant 8: I think because maybe for us Senior High School Students, ROTC would

be a new experience and we could have learned some self-defense techniques.

The responses of all the research participants agree with the implementation of ROTC

in SHS. According to them, it will help this generation become fully prepared for what could

and will happen in the future when they encounter a threat. The researchers found that even

though all the participants in this study agreed to implement the ROTC again, they still had

different contradictions about this.

II. TO FIND OUT THE PURPOSE OF ROTC AND WHAT GOOD IT WILL

BRING TO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.

MARYHILL COLLEGE
Question 1: What good can this cause for your future?

Participant 1: ROTC can cause me a good thing in my future, to be able to have

advanced knowledge in being part of the military.

Participant 2: This can help our country and all of us people who are living in

Philippines because one of the main problem here in the Philippines is poverty and I'm

pretty sure that implementation of ROTC can be the key to our better future.

Participant 3: This ROTC thing has many good things to cause for me, and one of

those benefits is that I will be ready for criminology training in the future, which will

help me to lessen the struggles that I will face when I start working in the future.

Participant 4: The good this can cause in my future is the ability to protect and defend

myself when danger is encountered for I get to learn the basic defense and offense skills

in ROTC program.

Participant 5: Well, a lot of people will know how to defense themselves and a lot

of us will transform into another version of ourselves. We will learn new things through

ROTC.

Participant 6: This will be an advantage and advance my knowledge because I am

pursuing criminology.

Participant 7: The good it can cause to my future is that I can defend and protect the

ones I love.

Participant 8: It may raise us to be ready in case something happens in our

environment and it also teaches us to learn some self-defense.

Question 2: Do you see the implementation of ROTC as an interference with what

your future career will be, or will this help you in your future career? Explain.
MARYHILL COLLEGE
Participant 1: No I don’t see an interference of ROTC, because it is a win-win

situation. With being able to have knowledge about self defense and that the ROTC

will not be able to effect the job that I will pick.

Participant 2: For me it will help me in my future career because it will help me to

be more discipline in all things and I'm sure that I can apply it in my future career

that I will take.

Participant 3: For me, this ROTC is a huge help for my future career; there is no

need to explain it because it is self-explanatory.

Participant 4: The implementation of ROTC wouldn’t be an interference especially

as I will take criminology in my college. This program will be beneficial to me

and to my academics.

Participant 5: Yes, as an aspiring criminology student, this will help me since I

will have an idea how the idea of training and criminology works.

Participant 6: Yes, It will help me because this will be a training program for me,

and this will be an opportunity for me to learn in advance.

Participant 7: I see the implementation of ROTC to help me in my future career

because the path I would take is risky and this implementation might aid me along

the way.

Participant 8: No, in fact it also helps me for my future because my dream career

is being a policeman.

Question 3: As a SHS student, what can you expect to learn by taking ROTC?

Participant 1: I can expect hardship, friendship, and discipline.

Participant 2: What I expect the most in ROTC is it teach and help the younger
MARYHILL COLLEGE
generation to know the essence of patriotism and will teach them the importance

of devoting ourselves to our country that can also help other people not just their

own. In this I believe that unity can be build because of ROTC.

Participant 3: I expect to learn a lot of things, both physically and mentally, as well

as some basic self-defense for students like me.

Participant 4: I expect to learn the basic skills that I could use for future purposes.

Participant 5: I can expect a variety of things related to ourselves. We can learn

how to be stronger and to be bolder.

Participant 6: I expect this will be hard and tiring, but this will be a significant

advanced experience.

Participant 7: As a SHS student, the things I expect to learn by taking ROTC is to

be disciplined, patriotic, and respectful to my fellow countrymen. I also expect to

learn self-defense skills that I could apply but hopefully not.

Participant 8: As a SHS student I have been expecting to learn self defense and the

basic training for my dream course in criminology.

The responses of the participants concluded that ROTC will always be a help to them

no matter what kind of career they will pursue in the future, because it does not just give you

more opportunities; it gives you knowledge on how to protect yourself even if you do not

take a criminology course or anything related to the military. According to Padilla (2016),

“ROTC graduates would have enhanced military skills and would become more patriotic, just

like in Singapore and Korea, which implement a two-year mandatory military service.”

III. TO ASSIST SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN BECOMING FULLY

INFORMED ABOUT ROTC AND TO UNDERSTAND THE PURPOSE OF

MARYHILL COLLEGE
IMPLEMENTING IT.

Question 1: Do you still think the implementation of ROTC in the Philippines is good,

given the bad history that ROTC had? Explain.

Participant 1: Yes I think the implementation of ROTC is good. It can put

undisciplined student in to hard military training that need perfect discipline.

Participant 2: Yes, because the main purpose of ROTC is for the younger generation

to be train and produce capable Armed Forces that can protect our country from the

other country who will try to destroy us.

Participant 3: Yes, ROTC is extremely good and has numerous advantages for me.

Participant 4: I think that the implementation of ROTC in the Philippines is still good

and I assume that the bad history have already been solve and turned into a new and

good one.

Participant 5: Well for now, it's 50/50. As much I want for it to push through, a lot of

people are not favorable against it. The majority always have a better voices.

Participant 6: Yes, because that is the past that we should change, and that is the old

government.

Participant 7: I still think the implementation of ROTC in the Philippines is good, given

the bad history that ROTC had because things changed and will change. Yet, it doesn't

mean that this implementation would be perfect, flaws are always expected but must

be lessened.

Participant 8: I think the ROTC is good but not all of us think that ROTC is good, but

considering the bad history of ROTC it will still be up to us if we would take ROTC or

not.

MARYHILL COLLEGE
Question 2: Do you think the implementation of ROTC in the Philippines will now do its

job as intended and not repeat the accidents that have occurred in the past? Explain.

Participant 1: Yes, because the ROTC have a student that they can teach and discipline

properly.

Participant 2: Yes, because from the past, you learn something and that mistake

cannot be repeat again because you know what to do and the prevention now in case

it happens again.

Participant 3: I think yes kase iba na naman yung mga tao ngayon sa dati e madami

nang matalino at madami nang mga students ang mga palaban na di mag papaapak ng

sariling dignidad, and I think mas better na ngayon or mas responsable na ngayon yung

mga nasa government, and I believe na di na siguro mawawala yung mga bobong tao

so pwede parin pala maulit yung sinasabi ninyong dating nangyari but past is past iba

na ngayon.

Participant 4: Yes, because such as people learn from their mistakes, I think that the

program rotc could change and be better and enough to be implemented again.

Participant 5: Yes, If all of us will agree and work together.

Participant 6: I think the implementation of ROTC in the Philippines will now do its

job because we now have the legal system, and we are now ready for what we should

do.

Participant 7: I think the implementation of ROTC in the Philippines will not perfectly

do its job as intended and might repeat the accidents that have occurred in the past

because mistakes are always bound to happen.

Participant 8: It may do its job but I can’t say that it may not repeat the accidents.
MARYHILL COLLEGE
Considering that it was on the past maybe the ROTC officials have learned something

to prevent the accidents that happen.

Question 3: Is there any chance ROTC in the Philippines will be a good decision

considering the times and people there are different from those now? Explain

Participant 1: Yes it will be a good decision. Because of change of drill sergeants

students will be in good care while conducting ROTC.

Participant 2: Yes, because I believe this generation is much more stronger and wiser

than those in the past because in this generation, it is more advanced unlike the past and

this generation also studies the past so for me, it will be a good decision for implementing

ROTC.

Participant 3: Oo naman po, dati ay dati everyone change naman po e.

Participant 4: Yes, I think that it will be a good decision because the rotc has the purpose

of teaching students the ability the protect themselves from the darkness of the world and I

think that is already an enough basis.

Participant 5: Yes, We need to convince one another that it is for our own benefits.

Participant 6: Yes, because if we want to pursue something, we will make a plan and

have critical time and thinking. So we will now have a lot of things to work for it, and

then we will have successful plans for it.

Participant 7: I think there is a chance ROTC in the Philippines will be a good decision

considering the times and people there are different from those now because its purpose is

good and beneficial to everyone regardless of the time and people.

Participant 8: Maybe, because we can’t just say that it is all good and neglect to mention

that it also had some bad effects. Yes, it is a good decision that we have an ROTC program
MARYHILL COLLEGE
back in the Philippines because it will help those who are aspiring police, AFP, military,

etc. And no, because some of us see the ROTC program as a hindrance to their future

careers.

Based on the responses of the participants, the majority of them agree that the

implementation of ROTC again here in the Philippines is still good despite the backlash and

bad history surrounding it. They believe that the past is the past and that people also learn from

the mistakes they have made. They also believe that they will now do their job properly and are

better prepared than before to avoid the mistakes and bad history that happened in the past. In

short, the past does not define the present or future in the participant’s eyes. “We are promoting

the return of Basic ROTC to teach our youth discipline and love for our country, especially

since they will lead the country one day,” Senator Gatchalian said.

According to Brig. Gen. Rolando Jungco, commander, AFP Civil Relations Service (CRS),

“What is needed to support the Armed Forces is a citizen army of well-trained reserves that can

make life difficult for any invader. Just as the threat of war with Japan served as an impetus for

the build-up of our Armed Forces before World War II, let us use the threats that come from

bullies in the neighborhood to prepare our youth for the defense of the homeland. It is time to

restore the mandatory two-year basic ROTC military training program that existed in the past.

Whatever mistakes or abuses were committed then should not be allowed to happen again.”

CHAPTER IV

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary of findings, conclusions, and recommendations of the

study. The study's main purpose was to determine the knowledge and opinions of selected

Grade 11 students on the implementation of ROTC, prompting the production of a

brochure or seminar that will serve as an educational guide for other students as well.

Summary of Findings

The study was conducted for the purpose of determining the views of grade 11 students at

Maryhill College on the ROTC implementation. It aimed to determine the opinions of selected

students who will be taking a criminology course, as well as their knowledge and views about

it. After gathering all the data needed, the researchers carefully put the answers of the

participants together and arranges the data.

In the gathered data, the researchers found that all the participants

agreed to the implementation of ROTC here in the Philippines. Findings from this study revealed

all of the participants believes in the implementation of ROTC even given the bad history of

ROTC, all of them still believe that its implementation of ROTC as one of the best programs a

school can have. They believe that

MA
LL
CO
E
implem

enting it
again even with its past tragedy in mind will still be a good choice. Despite the bad past its only

the past, you can not change the past nor altar it in any kind but you can change the present to not

repeat the same mistakes the past already did. Because the the past can not dictate nor define

what will happen in the present for it is history now, history that we hope not to be repeated.

Conclusion

Based on the results of the study, all of the participants agreed that ROTC can give many

benefits to SHS students, not only in the physical and career sense but in the mental and psychic

sense as well. It also serves as another form of education to better understand our country

through study, so that more people are well informed about how the Philippine military operates

and can be of greater assistance not only to citizens but also to our country.

Recommendations

Following the researcher's findings and conclusions, the following recommendations are

proposed:

1. ROTC provides leadership training and workshops to students in order to enhance their

capabilities, not just in handling a group but also in making the right decisions a leader should

make.

2. Investigate what ROTC actually is rather than basing all of your thoughts on what you have

heard.

3. The government must educate the students that ROTC is not just about being serious; it can

also be about socializing with other people and getting out of your comfort zone. It's about

achieving goals and working as a team with other people.

4. Future researchers need to conduct further research about this study in order to stay current on

student perspectives on ROTC implementation.
