Pairs and groups of 4

Time taken
20 minutes

When to use
After 9b, Vocabulary, Activity 4, Page 145

Preparation
Make one copy of the activity for each pair of students.

Procedure
1 Divide students into pairs and give each pair a
copy of the activity.
2 Explain that the activity contains opinions (as
sentence halves) about using technological devices.
Students will need to complete each opinion by
matching the sentence halves in pairs. They can
write their answers in the gaps provided. They will
need to use their knowledge of the phrasal verbs in
Module 9 to do this.
3 Get feedback by reading out the opinions as a class.
4 Ask each pair to join another pair to form groups
of four. In their groups, students discuss their
opinions about each statement. Do they agree with
them or not? If so, why or why not? Encourage
them to use words that express their attitude (e.g.
thankfully, obviously, sadly, surprisingly, basically,
clearly, fortunately, naturally, definitely). You could
put a list of these words on the board for students
to refer to.
5 Elicit feedback by discussing students’ attitudes to
some of the opinions.
