A Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in Junior High School Grade 9 – English

I. Objectives

At the end of the 45-minute discussion, the students should be able to:
a. define what modals are;
b. identify the different modals used in expressing permission, obligation, and
prohibition; and
c. express appreciation of the importance of learning the use of different modals in our
daily lives

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Expressing permission, obligation, and prohibition using modals.

Materials: Power Point Presentation, teacher-made visual aids

Values Integration: Promoting politeness and courtesy in expression using modals and as well
as the importance of following rules and regulations.

III. Procedure
A. Preliminary Activity
1. Greetings
2. Prayer
3. Classroom Management
4. Checking of Attendance
5. Review
The teacher will ask the following questions:
a. What is nonverbal communication?
b. Why is it important to study nonverbal communication?
B. Motivation

 The teacher will show a video about rules and regulations about COVID-19. The
following questions will be asked:
1. Why are rules important in our daily lives?
2. What are the rules and regulations that you saw in the video?

 The teacher will flash a PowerPoint slide containing all the rules and regulations.
The teacher will then ask the students about the words that are common in each
rule (must, can, cannot, should, have to).

 What do these words imply? The teacher make the students play “4 pics, 1 word”.
“4 pics, 1 word” is a game wherein the teacher will flash pictures which are
related to each other then the students will have to guess the word that is
being described by the pictures.

C. Lesson Proper
The teacher discusses the lesson about modals and their uses to express permission,
obligation, and prohibition.

D. Generalization
The teacher will ask the following questions to the students:
1. What are modals?
2. What are the modals that express permission?
3. What are the modals that express obligation?
4. What are the modals that express prohibition?

E. Application
Fill-in the blanks of the appropriate modal for each statement. You can choose the answer
from the three choices enclosed in the parenthesis after each item.

In 3 to 5 sentences, explain why is it important to learn the correct use of modals in our
daily lives. You will be graded using this criteria:

Mechanics: 3 points
Organization: 3 points
Total: 10 points
