CAYETANO, ALLONDRA KATE & GUILLERMO, MYRNA College of Arts and

Sciences, January 2023, “DEPICTION OF FAMILY ISSUES IN COCO AND

Contribution Number: 2023-02-003
Adviser: MARIA DELEILAH F. ADRIATICO

The study was conducted to analyze how family issues are depicted in the two

selected Disney films, Coco and Encanto.

Content analysis was utilized in order to gather the data needed. Results

revealed that there are several family issues depicted in the two films. These include:

family pressure and expectations, insensitivity, favoritism, oldest child syndrome,

emotional invalidation and rejection, jealousy and sibling rivalry of family individuals

are discussed. Lies and deception, manipulation, and blame-shifting in siblings and/or

family members were also identified Moreover, parent-child relationship issues such as

silent treatment, disrespecting, being forbidding parents, as well as being wrath and

hapless parents were tackled. The family-based issues including the generational gap

and generational trauma were also considered.

These family issues were evident in the movements, appearance and language of

the characters in the Disney films.
