    GE90 FAN STATOR ABRADABLE SHROUD


    EROSION MEASUREMENT

    AFI KLM E&M has developed an alternative procedure to the AMM 72-24-00-200-809 task to make it easier,
    faster, and cheaper to carry out GE90-110B/115B abradable shroud erosion measurements. No specific tools
    are required: just masking tape, a marker pen, and a graduated steel rule.

    The issue
    AMM task 72-24-00-200-809 sets out the measurement method to find the effective erosion depth on the fan stator abradable shroud on
    GE90-110B/115B engines. This procedure calls for local manufacture of a special tool. How the tool is positioned is not clearly explained in the
    AMM. The easiest method is to remove a fan blade.
    The removal and installation of a fan blade is not a complex task in itself, but after re-installation, an engine run-up is necessary to check the
    fan vibration level; a trim balance may also be required to fix the vibration issue. The AMM procedure was considered too complex, too expensive,
    and too risky in terms of potential impact on the flight schedule.

    The adaptive solution developed by AFI KLM E&M


    AFI KLM E&M developed a very simple alternative procedure to provide mechanics with a task that is easy to carry out. This procedure consists
    in using one fan blade as the reference. A reference measurement is made between the fan blade tip and the axial adhesive strip separating
    the abradable shroud sections. The erosion is then measured using the difference between the reference value and the value measured between
    the fan blade tip and the abradable shroud material at each location.
