Technology has played a big role in almost every aspects of our lives. It has proven
that the world continuously changes. It can be from the simple chores that we do, the
appliances and gadgets that we use today, the transportation and communication, medicine
and so much more with the field of education.

The challenging process of educating is in demanding need for solutions on how

technology will change education. Society seems to be fascinated by the eruption of
technological advancements in the educational field.

The effects of technology in the classroom are related to both the teacher and the
students. In the past classrooms were lecture driven. With technology involved in education,
the students are more active in their learning. The teacher is no longer the center of
attention. They play the role of a facilitator or guide of information and not so much of an
information source. Technology in the classroom allows the students to be more active with
the opportunity of communication of information.

The use of technology in education has evolved from helping the teachers with
presentations and reports up to this present time that it has been used by students to freely
access contents on the Internet and to accomplish a certain module or course with lesser
interaction or intervention from the teacher.
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to process
the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.

What’s New

Belle and Ina are friends who attend face to face classes They travel for two
hours every day to arrive at their school. Aside from the long travel time, they would
purchase books for each subject or even pay for photocopied resources. There are
times when they would go to school just to find out that their class is suspended.
There are instances when they go home late because of traffic. When they arrive
home, they do not have much time to do their assignments and take-home activities.
On the other hand, Ellie and Isa are Grade 12 students and are planning to enroll in
a university for college. While it was vacation, they both found out about MOOCs.
They decided to enroll on the offered courses which caught their interests.
Ellie was able to complete five courses while Isa was able to complete four courses.
Their pleasant experience with MOOCs includes hassle free enrollment, fully online
courses and free access to content. There were also able to meet other students
from other countries, with different cultures. Their learning has been more enjoyable
because of the content which include video lessons, readings, assessment and
discussion forums.

Comparing the experiences of Belle and Ina with face to face learning and
that of Ellie and Isa’s experience with online learning, what can you say about the
difference between the two approaches in learning?
