Engineering Material Specification
Engineering Material Specification
The materials defined by these specifications are low carbon steel sheet suitable for cold forming.
Specification WSS-M1P94-A shall be used where precoating by the steel supplier is required.
2. APPLICATION
These specifications were released originally for automotive body and chassis parts. They also
simplify material designation on Engineering Drawings when steels with mechanical properties
suitable for designing and forming the part are to be specified and components could be sourced
in several countries.
The abbreviations heading the tables (see para 4.3) indicate the country of origin of the
specification as follows:
Caution: Material supplied to WSD-M1A333-A3/A4 (Interstitial Free (IF) Steel) usually contains
titanium as an alloying addition. Such titanium alloyed steels, if subsequently surface treated by a
nitrocarburising /oxidizing process, risk becoming embrittled because of the formation of an ultrafine
TiN precipitate. IF steels containing vanadium and niobium are also thought to be prone to this
effect. Accordingly, IF steel should be avoided for parts subjected to the above noted surface
treatment processes.
3. REQUIREMENTS
Material suppliers and part producers must conform to the Company's Standard
Requirements For Production Materials (WSS-M99P1111-A).
The material shall be steel sheet suitable to form the part and be suitable for assembly.

Unless otherwise specified by Ford via the Engineering Drawing, the SMRL (see para 3.4)
or Purchase (Supply), the tolerance range on thickness shall comply with half (0.5X) that
stated in the relevant standard for cold rolled material (WSD-M1A333-A2/A3/A4) and
three quarters (0.75X) that stated in the relevant standard for hot rolled material (WSD-
M1A333-A1). The relevant standards are EN10131 (cold rolled material), EN 10051 (hot
rolled material), ASTM A 568M (hot rolled and cold rolled material).
3.4 FORMABILITY
The quality level of steel supplied to fabricate a specific component shall be negotiated
between the manufacturing activity and the steel supplier. Acceptance of subsequent
orders by the steel supplier for a given component at the agreed upon quality level implies
that all steel supplied will be of a comparable quality level and will form that part
satisfactorily as defined by the manufacturing activity.
Ford Motor Company may, at its option and in agreement with the steel supplier, compile
a list of property requirements such as mechanical properties, forming characteristics and
surface texture, for each specific part. This list will be a mandatory extension of these
specifications. The current responsible area within Ford Europe is Advanced Vehicle
Technology (AVT); Materials Engineering & Testing (ME&T). The current responsible
area within Ford North America is Advanced Technology and Material Engineering
(AT&ME). The current responsible area within Jaguar is Materials Engineering. The
aforementioned list shall be known as the Sheet Metal Requirements List (SMRL). The
SMRL may refer to national or international standards

3.5 WELDABILITY
The ensure acceptable weldability, all material must meet the following carbon equivalent
(C.E.) restriction:
. A Class 1 surface shall be specified for parts of the vehicle that are exposed to
view after paint or trim.
. A Class 2 surface shall be specified for parts of the vehicle not covered by trim
materials but exposed to view when the doors or enclosure lids are in an open
position.
. A Class 3 surface shall be specified for parts of the vehicle that are concealed
during normal use. Where Hot Rolled material is specified, the delivery condition
shall be pickled and oiled, unless otherwise specified by Ford via the Engineering
Drawing, the SMRL (see para 3.4) or Purchase (Supply).
Unless otherwise specified by Ford via the Engineering Drawing, the SMRL (see para 3.4)
or Purchase (Supply), these materials shall be coated with a light, even film of protective,
Ford approved mill oil or prelube.
Other than for North America, where the surface appearance is specified, the surface
roughness Ra (to SEP 1940) (2.5 mm cut- off length; 1 micrometer (+/- 0.5 micrometer)
band width; 12.5 mm min effective traverse length; flat skid type) is defined thus:
Peak density 45 ppcm (Peak Valley Pairs per centimeter) min (at 2.5 mm cut-off).
. Class 3

3.7 PAINTABILITY
Material supplied to these specifications must have prior approval for paintability by the
responsible Materials Engineering activity. This approval shall be based on samples
prepared to the local process and performance requirements appropriate to the country of
vehicle manufacture.
Where the material or component is delivered to Ford in the fully painted condition, this
para is not applicable and the performance defined by the drawing is mandatory. Where
the final product is to be surface coated by other methods, e.g. Electroplate, a similar
approval procedure applies (see also para 4.10).
4. GENERAL INFORMATION
The information given below is provided for clarification and assistance in meeting the
requirements of this specification.
For initial approval, the supplier should furnish the following information for each variant.
Test results from a typical production sample for the requirements outlined in para 3.
Upon approval, the material will be added to the Engineering Material Approved Source
List.
For material with specified thickness at or above 3.0 mm, WSD-M1A333-A1 is typically
used. For material with thickness over 1.5 mm but below 3.0 mm, WSD-M1A333-A1 or
A2 are typically used. or material with thickness up to 1.5 mm inclusive, WSD-M1A333-A2
is typically used (WSD-M1A333-A3 and/or WSD-M1A333-A4 may be options in certain
circumstances. See also the Caution on Page 1).
A range of formability grades are available within variants A1 and A2. Variant A3 is a high
formability interstitial free grade. Variant A4 is an extra high formability interstitial free
grade. For guidance, a cross reference of specifications is given in para 4.3.

Compared with uncoated steel sheet, coated steels have different properties from those
shown below, which may affect design and manufacturing operations. (Test specimens

ENGINEERING MATERIAL SPECIFICATION WSD-M1A333-A1/A4
Compared with uncoated steel sheet, coated steels have different properties from those
shown below, which may affect design and manufacturing operations.
Notes:
1) The values of yield stress are the 0.2 % proof stress for products which do not
present a definite yield point and the lower yield stress (Rel) for others. For thin
gauges, the yield stress value tends to increase. Up to 20 MPa is typical for < 0.7
mm and > 0.5 mm. Up to 40 MPa is typical for < 0.5 mm.
2) For thin gauges, the % elongation value tends to decrease. Up to 2 units is typical
for < 0.7 mm and > 0.5 mm.
3) The values of r90 and n90 only apply to products of thickness > 0.5 mm.
4) Test specimens taken in the transverse (i.e., 90 deg to the rolling) direction.
Test specimens and method based on ASTM standards. Values for Yield, Tensile
Strength and Elongation are based on specimens taken in the longitudinal direction (0
degrees to rolling).

4.10 PAINTABILITY
. Material intended for Class 1 surface applications shall meet the requirements of
ESB-M2P130-A.
. Material intended for Class 2 and 3 surface applications shall meet the
requirements of ESB-M2P129-B.
If and when choosing a minimum gage from ES-YC15-1N260-AA, if the previous choice
of gage was nominal, it is important to avoid generating an inadvertent increase in the
ACTUAL thickness of the component, and consideration should be given to specifying the
next lowest minimum gage e.g. (Ford Europe example) for an existing 0.80 mm nominal
gage, the nearest equivalent minimum gage in ES-YC15-1N260-AA is 0.75 mm.
