Q1: How many daughters does Mrs. Bennet have?


Answer: 5/five

Q2: Name all the Bennet sisters.


Answer: Jane, Elizabeth/Lizzy, Mary, Catherine and Lydia

Q3: Why does Mr. Darcy not like Mr. Wickham?


Answer: Because Mr. Wickham ran away with Mr. Darcy’s sister to marry her
Discussion: Mr. Wickham had convinced Mr. Darcy’s younger sister, Georgiana, that he
was in love with her and they had run away to marry. However, Wickham
admitted later that he only wanted to marry Lydia for her money.

Q4: Why is Mrs. Bennet upset when Lizzy refuses to marry Mr. Collins?
Answer: So the Longbourn estate stays within her family.
Discussion: As Mr. Bennet does not have any male heirs, when Lizzy’s father eventually
dies, Mr. Collins will inherit Longbourn, the Bennet’s family home. Mrs. Bennet
wants one of her daughters to marry Mr. Collins so that the Longbourn estate
stays in her family.

Q5: What is the name of Mr. Darcy’s home?


Answer: Pemberley

Q6: Explain how Elizabeth’s feelings towards Mr. Darcy change throughout the
story.
Answer: At first Elizabeth doesn’t like Mr. Darcy because he is rude but she learns
she has wrongly judged him. At the end of the story she likes him and they
marry.
Discussion: At the beginning of the story, Elizabeth finds Mr. Darcy’s attitude is rude
and cold. She learns that Mr. Darcy had persuaded his friend Mr. Bingley
that her sister Jane was a bad match for him. Mr. Wickham also tells her that
when old Mr. Darcy died, he left Mr. Wickham a job as clergyman (priest) at
Pemberley and that out of jealousy, Mr. Darcy refused to give him it. However,
in Mr. Darcy’s letter, Elizabeth learns that Mr. Wickham was in fact lying and
that Mr. Darcy has been wrongly prejudiced. After he helps find Elizabeth’s
sister, she forgives Mr. Darcy and finds she has new feelings of respect for
him. At the end of the story, Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth marry.

Q7-Q10: What was your favourite part of the story?


Discussion: The purpose of these questions is for pupils to develop their understanding of
Regency England through the story. During this discussion, explain the context
in Victorian society: balls, fashion, status and marriage. Pupils are
encouraged to adapt on their answers and explain their reasons behind their
questions.
