Bikes on sidewalks Pro Rodeo/ Mike Touchie gets around by wheelchair for the past 33 years, after a fall on Fall Fair weekend
a construction site which left him without the use of his legs. Since that time, hes been an advocate for accessibility & the rights of persons with disabilities. Mike says that this time of year, just before school starts and just after it ends in June is the most dangerous time for people using the sidewalks. Its scary for people with disabilities, and the elderly, with all the bikes using the sidewalks, he says. Were not able to jump out of the way. He says everyday he has a near miss with a bike or a skateboard. Theres a bylaw against riding bikes and skateboards on the sidewalks in the downtown core. But even with the increased bike activity, theres little enforcement of the bylaw. Mike is hoping that awareness & deference to pedestrians will get cyclists onto the streets. Bikes are street-legal vehicles. Drivers in this town will begin to respect cyclists when they start riding on the streets & following the rules of the road.

Insulator collectors will be gathering again in Merritt for the annual Iinsulator show, on Saturday, Sept 10. As in past years, insulator collectors will be here from California, Oregon and Washington, Vancouver Island, Alberta, and Vancouver. Some will bring insulators to swap or sell, while others will bring insulators of special historical importance for display purposes only. The hobby is quite diverse with collectors specializing in various areas such as foreign insulators, exotic colours, styles, or the glass manufacturing companies. It is a hobby where there is something of interest for everyone. There will be a free table where folks may help themselves to a variety of insulators as a starter kit. If you have some insulators and wish to learn more about their value, history, or any of the other aspects of the hobby, come on out to the show. Its happening at Insulator Ranch, on Coldwater Rd, 1 block south of Pooley Ave., watch for the signs. The Labour Day long weekend means Rodeo & Fall Fair days, a Nicola Valley tradition! Theres a pancake breakfast on Saturday 8-11am at Quilchena Square, corner Quilchena Ave. & Garcia St. Bring the whole family for pancakes, eggs & sausage, and meet this years Merritt Centennials! Adults $7, kids & seniors $5, under 6 years of age $3. Rodeo action begins at 1pm each day at the rodeo grounds on Lindley Creek Rd. Day passes are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors & children 6-12, under 6 free. The Fall Fair will be accepting exhibits this evening 7-9pm, and tomorrow 78am. Doors open Saturday 12noon-8pm and Sunday 9:30am-2:30pm. Participants can collect their entries & any prizes from 2:30pm. The Fall Fair country dan will be held Sunday evening, 9pm-1am, 19+, tickets $10ea, entertainment by John Allison Productions. The Goldwing Motorcycle Club hits town this weekend, Sept. 3-5. It is expected to draw 100 Gold Wing motorcycles. Theyll hold their annual parade on Sunday, 6:30-9pm, downtown to Claybanks, through the west end of town, up Voght to Belshaw, ending in the Dairy Queen parking lot.
