Now, can anyone create a story out of this photo? you are going to fill in this
blank speech balloon.

Ma’am!
Yes, start.

Liza, can you imagine yourself in a bath tub?

Isn’t relaxing?
Yes, it is.
I have an idea, how about, let’s try it using a basin?
Great idea! I think it will be enjoyable,
Alright, thank you, very good.
When do we see this kind of dialogue?

Ma’am in a comic book.

And how do we call this?

Very good, in a comic book there is a story, right? Comic strip ma’am.

Now let’s have a group activity. Yes Ma’am/

on their understanding. (The student will proceed to their groupmates)

Very good class, great presentation.

On your activity what did you notice? Ma’am on our activity we tell a story about the video we
watched.
So, how do you call it when you watch a video then you will tell it to other
people what you have watched.
Story telling ma’am?
What else?
Narration ma’am.
Exactly!

Okay, so when you are talking to someone, do you make sure that all the
things that you tell to them is right? Or do you make sure that you tell all the
details accordingly, based on what happen first, next, then and last?

On our first activity I asked you to share the story that you have watched, and
what you did is what we called “narration”.

Abstraction

What is a Narration?
 In English language, the act of reporting the word is called
narration or reported speech.
 To express speaker’s statement, we use the following two
ways:

DIRECT
 The reporting of words without making any changes and the
statement said by the speaker should be under the inverted
camera.
INDIRECT
 The reporting of words with making changes and the statement
said by the speaker should not be under the inverted comma.

What it is?
EXAMPLES:
 DIRECT: Reema said to me. “I shall go to the cinema today”
 INDIRECT: Reema told me that she would go to the cinema
today.
 The verb used to begin speaker’s statement is called Reported
Speech.
 The repetition of the statement by the speaker is called
Reported Speech.
 DIRECT: Reema said to me” I shall go to the cinema today”.
 INDIRECT: Reema told me that she would go to the cinema
today.
 Reema Said to me
(Reporter) (Reporting verb)
I shall go to the cinema today
(Reported Speech)

HOW TO DIRECT NARRATION CHANGE TO INDIRECT

NARRATION
1. Reporting verb ‘said to’ >>> ‘told’
2.Inverted commas>>> Conjunction ‘that’
3. ‘I’ >>> ’she’
4. shall go >>> would go
CHANGE OF VERB

If reporting verb is in Present tense or in Future, then there will

be no change in reported speech’s tense.
For example:
1. Direct: She says “Mark is a good boy”
2. Direct: He will say that Mark is reading.
CHANGE OF VERB (PRESENT)
 If Reporting Verb is in past tense then reported speech’s tense
will change into the following:
a) Simple present>>> Simple Past
1. Direct: Meena said to me, “Mark is a good girl”.
Indirect: Meena told me that Mark was a good girl.

b). Present continuous>>> Past Continuous

1. Direct: He said “Kristel is telling a lie”
Indirect: He said that Kristel was telling a lie.
2. Direct: Carl said “The girls are reading.”
Indirect: Carl said that girls are reading.
3. Direct: Ram said, “I am going to school.”
Indirect: Ram said that he was going to school.

c) Present Perfect>>> Past Perfect

1. Direct: Mae said “Ken has gone home”
Indirect: Mae said that Ken had gone home.
2. Direct: The teacher said, “The girls have sung a song.”
Indirect: The teacher said that the girls had sung a song.

d.) Present Perfect Cont. >>> Past Perfect Cont.

1. Direct: She said, “The boys have been playing.”

Indirect: She said that the boys had been playing.
2. Direct: He said, “My brother has been coming”
Indirect: He said that his brother had been coming.
CHANGE OF VERB (PAST)
e.) Simple Past >>> Past Perfect

1. Direct: You said to him, “You went to Lopez yesterday.”

Indirect: You told to him that he had gone to Lopez
yesterday.

2. Direct: He said to us, “You did not help.”

Indirect: He told us that we did not help him.
f.) Past Continuous>>> Past Perfect Cont.
1. Direct: He said to me, “Jessica was weeping”
Indirect: He told me that Jessica had been weeping.
2. Direct: I said, “Lito was going home”
Indirect: I said that Lito had been going home.
g.) THERE WILL BE NO CHANGE IN PAST PERCTFECT
AND PAST PERFECT CONTINOUS***like

1. Direct: You said, “Tom had cooked food”

Indirect: You said that Maya had cooked food.
2. Direct: She said, “Leo had been sleeping”
Indirect: She said that Leo had been sleeping.

Okay, so do you understand what is the two ways of narrating?

So, in narrating we also use transitional words, such as, firstly, secondly,
lastly, finally etc.

And we also answer who, what, when, and where.

So, in narration we tell a story, it can be our experienced, or a story that we Yes ma’am.
heard our watch.

Is it clear class?

Do you have any questions?

Yes Ma’am.

None Ma’am.
