6
LESSON

In today’s lesson we will learn on how to respond appropriately to

messages of different authentic text. Let us first know what an authentic text
is.

Authentic texts are defined as “written by members of a language and

culture group for members of the same language and culture group”
(Galloway, 1998, p. 133, as cited in Glisan).

Authentic texts are written for “real world” purposes and audiences: to
entertain, inform, explain, guide, document or convince. In fact, authentic
texts need not even be written words. Journal articles, blog posts and novels
are just a few examples.

Here are some examples of authentic texts. Take a look at them.

Guided Practice A

What do you call this one? Okay! This a front page

of newspaper. A newspaper is an example of
authentic texts. A newspaper is a periodical
publication containing written information about
current events and is often typed in black ink with
a white or gray background. Wikipedia
Let’s proceed on the next picture.

How about this one? Ok correct

this a story from a piece of
course book material form NEF
Up-Int p.30. Story is a narrative,
either true or fictitious, in prose
or verse, designed to interest,
amuse, or instruct the hearer or
reader; tale. Dictionary.com
The text here is authentic. Let’s
proceed to the next one.

7
Alright this one is a cover of a magazine.
A magazine is always a periodical
publication which is printed in gloss-
coated and matte paper or electronically
published. They are generally published on a
regular schedule and contain a variety
of content. Wikipedia
Now, let’s proceed to the last example.

This one is? Ok

you are correct this an advertisement of
Coco Martin. Advertisements are
examples of authentic texts too.
A television advertisement is a span of
television programming produced and
paid for by an organization. It conveys a
message promoting, and aiming to
market, a product or service. Advertisers
and marketers may refer to television
commercials as TVCs. Wikipedia

You are now familiar with the different types of authentic texts, now I will
give you some authentic texts from journals, articles and diaries. I want to
you to respond appropriately to the text after you read them.

Guided Practice B

Let us read a journal entry below.

Parenting is calling out the Foolish

CHILDREN, FUNNY, LAUNDROMAT, PARENTS/GUARDIANS, USA, WYOMING | RIGHT | SEPTEMBER 23, 2020

I work at a laundromat that has machines up front, but we also do

commercial laundry in the back. We have a register to offer change for the
machines, which I am standing next to with my back to the register. Behind
me on the counter is a bell for when we’re in the back. A little kid of about five
or six dings the bell and I turn around.

Kid: “SORRY!”

8
Mother: “Sorry isn’t an excuse when you do something foolish on purpose.”

How will you respond in this journal? Probably you find it funny doing
things like the kid did. But why do you think mother scolded him? Write at
least two sentences response in your notebook.

Here’s another example of authentic text, a diary entry.

Bad Day: May 16th 2018, 11PM
Dear Diary,

I am sorry to disappoint you today as I did nothing much today. I woke up

at 7 in the morning as usual. It was raining heavily, so I didn't go to the school.
I know it was just an excuse and I regret it. During the day time, I did nothing
other than watching YouTube videos. At 5 in the evening, I went to the market
to grab something to eat and all of a sudden, I saw my teacher sitting opposite
to me. I was really embarrassed as I had informed that I wasn't feeling good
and won't be able to come for class today.

How do you find this diary entry? Do you think it is fine to make excuses
like this? If you are the student in this situation would you do the same? Write
your answer in your notebook.
Here’s another example of authentic text taken from the article of Jill
Chua about “Food for thought: This is what happens to food waste”

Once you throw your food away, they go straight to the landfill—but it
doesn’t just end then and there. Studies show that food waste in landfills
essentially becomes toxic. When they are trapped in a huge pile of garbage,
they’re deprived of oxygen, which is an important component for food to
naturally decompose. And without oxygen, food waste releases methane—a
greenhouse gas that is 20 times more harmful to the atmosphere than carbon
dioxide.

How about on this article? How do you think we can minimize garbage
in our home? Can you give ways in disposing it? Write your answer in your
English notebook.

Those are some examples of authentic texts you may encounter. Now
let us see if you learned something in this lesson.

We can help solve the food waste problem

By BusinessMirror Editorial
November 14, 2019

In the Philippines, where being poor means looking for your food on a
garbage dump, more than 13 million Filipinos can’t afford three meals a
day. This is sad considering that Filipinos also waste about 308,000 tons of
rice every year. In Metro Manila alone, an estimated 2,175 tons of food scraps
end up in trash bins on a daily basis. Much of this wasted food comes from
restaurants.

Experts said one of the top contributors to food wastage is the lack of
planning on the part of consumers. Sometimes people buy lots of food without
making plans on when and how the food will be prepared for consumption.
Then they fail to remember using or preparing the food they buy. On the other
hand, food is also wasted because people cook or prepare too much. If there’s
too much food than is needed, most of the time the excess food will go to
waste.
